Default Friendly: Germany 0 - 1 Denmark

Germany will take on Denmark in a friendly international at the MSV-Arena in Duisburg on Wednesday 28 March.

Danish glory
The game is a repeat of the 1992 UEFA European Championship final, won 2-0 by Denmark. Both sides have made strong starts to UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying, with Germany level with the Czech Republic on ten points from four games at the top of Group D while Denmark have seven points from three Group F matches and are second in the section, five points behind Sweden with a game in hand.

It's being reported that Robert Enke will start this match.

Low will rest Germany's top players, so I don't know what to expect.

Hopefully Schlaudraff will get some playing time.

Interesting. Lets see if the 'second' team can take a win.

Default Loew Lets Eight Go

After the fundamental 2-1 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday, Germany Coach Joachim Loew has let eight players go from his call-up list.

Loew wants to concentrate on seeing new players and habitual subs in the forthcoming game against Denmark on Wednesday.

Given that perspective and the ‘mission accomplished’ feeling after the weekend game, Loew has let the following eight players return to their clubs:

Lehmann (Arsenal), Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Lahm (Bayern Munich), Ballack (Chelsea), Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Frings (Werder Bremen), Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen) and Podolski (Bayern Munich)

The Coach also praised Brazilian-born Kevin Kuranyi, the sorer of the brace that keeps Germany presiding over Group D with thirteen points that give a three-point safety margin above the Irish and the Czechs.

“Kuranyi showed that he’s back in the Mannschaft on his own merits and I’m confident that he’ll be scoring a lot more in future matches as well”, stressed the Coach.

To compensate for the eight out on leave, Loew has called up just two new faces: Patrick Helmes (FC Köln) and Simon Rolfes (Bayer Leverkusen).

Default Olsen: Germany lack respect

Quote:
Morten Olsen says Germany coach Joachim Low's decision to field a second-string team against Denmark 'shows a lack of respect'.

Low will rest many of his top stars for Wednesday's friendly in Duisburg and the Danes are far from happy with the situation.

"I worked for four years here in Germany and always found them to be good hosts, but what has happened this week shows a lack of respect," he said.

"My colleague doesn't have to ring me up and say what tactics he'll be using or if one or two players are missing.

"We did, however, agree to field our best teams. If there are reasons the DFB has to replace seven or eight players, they can give me a call and talk about it.

"As it is, I found out about it in the paper and that's just not the way to go about things."

Low made the decision to rest the likes of Michael Ballack, Bernd Schneider and Torsten Frings because he felt the players needed a break ahead of the upcoming European ties for their clubs, but his argument has not convinced the Danish squad.

Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen said: "I've already had 46 games this season and that's more than any German player.

"We still have league games to play and my club is still in the cup and the Uefa Cup, but I'm proud to be able to play for my country."

Default International Friendly Preview: Germany-Denmark

Germany host neighbours Denmark in a Duisburg friendly on Wednesday night amid Danish claims that Bundestrainer Joachim Löw has been disrespectful to the visitors. Brian O'Driscoll previews the game.

After Saturday’s superb 2-1 Euro 2008 Group D win in Prague against the Czech Republic, Joachim Löw opted to rest several of his first-teamers for the Denmark friendly as a sop to the Bundesliga clubs.

However, Danish coach Morten Olsen reacted with fury on hearing the news. "This is very disrespectful," he told the German press on Tuesday. "We had a clear agreement to field our strongest teams. I wasn't told about it by the DFB. I read about it in the newspapers, and you don't do that."

Whatever the legitimacy or otherwise of Olsen’s claims, Germany will take the field without Michael Ballack, goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, Philipp Lahm, Lukas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Torsten Frings, Per Mertesacker, and Bernd Schneider. Noticeably, all play for clubs chasing championships or the reward of European football.

"We have to experiment sometimes," explained Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff. "We want to see some of the players who are usually in the second tier."

This means that Hannover’s Robert Enke gets a well deserved chance between the posts, Bayer Leverkusen’s Gonzalo Castro should start at full back, and the revitalised Alexander Madlung is likely to stake his claim in defence. Hamburger SV’s exciting Piotr Trochowski has another chance to shine in midfield, while Alemannia Aachen’s Bayern-bound Jan Schlaudraff should partner Saturday’s two-goal hero Kevin Kuranyi in attack.

Olsen’s tetchiness can possibly be explained by his side’s 2-1 qualification reverse in Spain on Saturday night. His mood was hardly helped by the loss of midfielder Martin Jorgensen who pulled out of the squad for personal reasons.

This won’t be the first time Denmark have faced a deliberately weakened German XI. Back in 1986, the Germans fielded a number of reserves for the World Cup Group E match in Queretaro. Denmark won 2-0 and qualified to face Spain in the last 16. The Germans’ reward? Morocco.

POSSIBLE TEAMS:

Germany: Enke; Castro, Friedrich, Madlung, Jansen; Fritz, Rolfes, Hitzlsperger; Trochowski, Kuranyi, Schlaudraff

Denmark: Sorensen; Andreasen, Gravgaard, Jacobsen, Agger; Jensen, Poulsen, Rommedahl, Gronkjaer; Bendtner, Tomasson

I doubt Germany will beat Denmark with the reserves. Denmark is a quality side, and they proved that against Spain on Saturday.

I know Denmark are a good team, they have beaten Portugal in a friendly some months ago. But Germany are playing at home and the 'reserve' team:

...........................Enke
G Castro...Friedrich...Metzelder...Jansen
............Rolfes........Hitzelsperger
....Hilbert...........................Trochowski
.................Kurany...Kiessling

Isn't exactly shit.

Robert Enke -> Former Barcelona goalkeeper, nominated the best keeper in the first half of the bundesliga

Gonzalo Castro -> One of the most promising youngsters in Germany, he is a regular at Leverkusen

Christoph Metzelder
-> I think you guys now who he is

Manuel Friedrich -> Mainz's captain, he is similar to Metzelder in many ways

Marcell Jansen -> World class LB, give him a few months and you'll see him at Bayern.

Simon Rolfes -> A leverkusen starter, having benched the likes of Carsten Ramelow

Thomas Hitzlsperger -> I think you guys remenber him from his Aston Villa days. Good midfielder, hard-worker with a fantastic long range shot

Roberto Hilbert ->Stuttgart starter, very pacy winger with great crossing skills. He was the stars of the Germanu U21 squad.

Piotr Trochowski -> HSV starter, he is a right footed winger who likes to play on the left. He is compared to Bastian Schweinsteiger
