Bilic Turns Down Hamburg Job Offer
Quote:
Croatian national team manager Slaven Bilic has turned down the job offer from HSV Hamburg to succeed Huub Stevens as their trainer for next season.
Bilic was rumoured to be the number one choice of the board to replace the outgoing Stevens, but the former Karlsruhe defender has said he wants to carry on in his post of Croatian boss, so the search continues for Hamburg.
The 39 year old revealed his decision on Friday to assembled journalists I Zagreb. Huub Stevens is leaving the club at the end of the season to take over the trainer’s job at PSV Eindhoven.
Bilic’s current deal with the Croatian Federation runs out in the summer and he was seen in the stands last weekend watching Hamburg play Borussia Dortmund, stoking up the speculation that he would be the successor to Huub Stevens.
“From discussions here at Hamburg, I can see that I am the number one candidate” Bilic revealed.
“It’s a fantastic offer and one that doesn’t come around too often, but I want to stay with Croatia” he added.
The news will also come as a blow to Premier League clubs West Ham and Fulham, who were both reportedly interested in hiring the Croatian, as well as Paris St. German, who were also monitoring the situation.
Media reports in Croatia had earlier speculated that Bilic would look to split his time between the Bundesliga side and his role as national trainer.
So the search continues for HSV. Names still in the hat are Fred Rutten (Twente Enschede), Christian Gross (FC Basel, Bruno Labbadia (Greuther Fürth) and Jürgen Klopp (Mainz).

Van Gaal In At Hamburg?
Reports in Holland claim that AZ Alkmaar trainer Louis van Gaal is set to leave the club at the end of the season, prompting speculation that he could become the new trainer of HSV Hamburg.
According to Dutch TV station ‘NOS’, van Gaal is definitely leaving the Eredivisie club at the end of this season despite having a contract which runs until 2010.
The club have gone from league title and Uefa Cup contenders last season to twelfth place in a year and bosses at the club look to have lost patience with the coach.
The 56 year old is certainly experienced enough internationally, which is one of the main criteria cited by the Hamburg board as they search for a suitable replacement for the outgoing Huub Stevens.
Van Gaal has had two stints as manager of Barcelona, coached Ajax and was the Dutch national team trainer between 2000 and 2002.
The news of his possible exit from Alkmaar has got the grapevine buzzing as to a possible move to Hamburg. Van Gaal himself has already stated that he could well imagine working abroad again.
Fellow Eredivisie trainer Fred Rutten from Twente Enschede is also a top candidate for the HSV job as is Jürgen Klopp from Mainz.

Klopp The Next To Reject HSV?
According to German tabloid Bild, Mainz 05 coach Jürgen Klopp looks set to be the next name to rule himself out of the running for the Hamburg job.
HSV have known since November that current manager Huub Stevens would step down at the end of the season, but despite vowing to have a new man confirmed by March progress has been slower than expected.
Now comes the news that Klopp, whose Mainz side are currently battling for promotion to the Bundesliga, appears ready to stay put in Rhineland Palatinate rather than make the journey north to manage the Hanseaten.
"If Klopp gets the feeling that this side want to get back in the Bundesliga, he'll stay," commented Mainz president Harald Strunz.
Another Rejection
The popular coach and TV pundit was by no means Hamburg's first choice for the job, but if this is indeed another rejection it doesn't make good reading for HSV officials or fans.
Slaven Bilic was offered the job at the HSH-Nordbank Arena last month but declined, opting to stay put as coach of Croatia. Meanwhile, Hamburg have twice made enquiries about Hannover 96 coach Dieter Hecking but been told to back off by chiefs there. FC Basel coach Christian Gross has also turned the club down.
Hamburg lost at the weekend but are still third in the Bundesliga with every chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Nevertheless, there appears to be no clear frontrunner for the manager's job.

Houllier Linked With Hamburg Post
Former Liverpool and Lyon manager Gérard Houllier has been linked with the soon to be vacant Hamburg job, with one German magazine even claiming the deal is as good as done.
HSV seem to be leaning towards the appointment of another foreign coach when current trainer Huub Stevens steps down at the end of this season and the name of the 60-year-old Frenchman is the latest to crop up.
Houllier, who has had successful spells in charge of Lens, Paris St. Germain, Liverpool and Lyon, as well as a less successful stint in charge of the French national team.
He was interviewed earler this year with a view to taking the Newcastle job before the board there decided to go with former Hamburg star Kevin Keegan.
HSV are said to have already contact Houllier, and although Bild are reporting that the Frenchman initially turned down the chance to hold talks, they have also revealed that the Hanseaten are not willing to relinquish this particular line of interest so easily.
Kicker, meanwhile, have gone further still, claiming that the Frenchman has been talked round and is on the verge of accepting the position. The reason? Chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer's admission yesterday that he went to talk to the players "not about the Duisburg match (Hamburg lost 1-0), but about a few other things."
If the reports are true it would bring to an end a five-month search for the next coach, an arduous proceess despite the very realistic prospect of Champions League football at the HSH-Nordbank Arena next season. Slaven Bilic has already been offered the position but declined, while Mainz coach Jürgen Klopp seems willing to remain where he is provided his side win promotion back to the Bundesliga.

Houllier To Snub Hamburg
Reports in France claim that Gerard Houllier will turn Hamburg down as they bid to secure his services as successor to Huub Stevens.
French newspaper L’Équipe say that the former Liverpool and Lyon boss will snub any approach from the Bundesliga club and will not succeed Dutchman Huub Stevens at the HSH Nordbank Arena.
Houllier is currently employed by the French Football Federation as a technical director and is keen to stay in the post.
“He has a contract and I am convinced that he will fulfil it. He is our technical director and he will remain so” commented FFF spokesman Francois Manardo.
Manardo also explained that Houllier had turned down numerous club offers in the past, as well as a few national team jobs.
According to sources at L’Équipe, Hamburg have already met with Houllier in Paris to discuss the trainer’s job at the Bundesliga club.

HSV Approach Martin Jol
As they have been waiting for Gérard Houllier’s response for two weeks, HSV have also turned their attention elsewhere, giving Martin Jol a call.
It looked like the German club bosses had all the time in the world to hire a new coach, as it was confirmed that Huub Stevens would return to his native Netherlands this summer to take over at PSV Eindhoven as early as November 19 last year.
But so far their search hasn’t been fruitful. Hamburg have been linked with the likes of Louis van Gaal, Fred Rutten, Slaven Bilić, Christian Gross, Bruno Labbadia and Jürgen Klopp, before the 60-year-old Frenchman appeared to top their list on April 14.
But Houllier, who left Olympique Lyonnais on May 2007, re-joined the French football federation as a technical director last September and L'Équipe sports newspaper insisted recently that he would honour his contract, subsequently turning HSV down.
That could be the reason why Hamburg made contact with Martin Jol, according to Kicker, which reports that the Dutchman could be a back-up solution in case Houllier indeed refused the club’s offer. The former Roda boss has reportedly received several job offers since being sacked by Tottenham on October 25 last year and the German sports magazine suggests he’s already discussed with HSV bosses.

Jol Poised To Accept HSV Post
Hamburg’s search for a new trainer looks to be nearing an end with Martin Jol tipped to accept the job in the next few days.
The search for a successor to Huub Stevens seems to be over at Hamburg as Dutchman Martin Jol looks set to accept the post this week and be unveiled at the HSH Nordbank Arena.
52 year old Jol has been selected by HSV board as the one to take over the reins when current trainer Huub Stevens returns to Holland at the end of the season.
The former Tottenham manager has also been linked with the jobs at both Twente Enschede and Borussia Dortmund, but after much deliberation it is being reported that he will accept the Hamburg job.
HSV had also been in talks with Gerard Houllier over the soon-to-be vacant post at the club, but the Frenchman has preferred to remain in his role with the French Football Federation.
Jol was fired by Spurs earlier this season to make way for Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane. His only success as trainer so far came back in 1997, when he led Roda Kerkrade to the Dutch Cup.

Hamburg close to Jol deal
Quote:
Martin Jol is close to a return to management after holding talks with Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.
The former Spurs boss has been out of work since leaving White Hart Lane last year but is favourite to succeed Huub Stevens at the German club.
Hamburg confirmed they held talks with Jol, 52, ahead of Wednesday's derby defeat to Werder Bremen, but a final decision will not be made until next week.
Board chairman Horst Becker said: "Jol is a topic for Tuesday's board of management meeting."
The Dutchman is reportedly set to net a two-year-deal worth 2 million euros per year.

Jol Closer To HSV Post
Quote:
Zeljko Petrovic's hinted that talks are at an advanced stage for him to become Martin Jol's no.2 at HSV...
Zeljko Petrovic has hinted that he's sign a deal to work alongside ex-Spurs boss Martin Jol at Bundesliga side Hamburg.
Petrovic is at the helm of Dutch outfit RKC Waalwijk and his decision to reject Belgian side AA Gent's approaches in order to join Jol in the Dutchman's Nordbank Arena revolution.
“Martin and I know each other very well,” Petrovic revealed. “He is one of the few trainers I would like to work with as assistant coach.
“I am 42 years old now; by the time our HSV contract ends I will be 44. By then I will have plenty of time to build a career as head coach.
“I can learn a lot at HSV. I see this as a promotion, it is fantastic.”
Jol has been out of management since being replaced by Juane Ramos at White Hart Lane.

HSV To Announce New Boss Tomorrow
A six-month period of searching for Huub Stevens’ successor looks like finally coming to an end for HSV, who are set to reveal the identity of their next coach onTuesday.
And it is widely expected that the club’s supervisory committee will hand the job over to Martin Jol. What remains to be seen is the duration of the contract and whether Željko Petrović will give up his job as the Waalwijk head coach to become the Dutchman’s assistant.
The highest salary ever
HSV’s twelve directors are set to meet tomorrow at 18:00 (both local time and CEST) at the “HSH Nordbank Arena” to decide on the financial terms of the Jol deal. Board chairman Bernd Hoffmann and director of sport Didi Beiersdorfer have struck an initial agreement with the 52-year-old coach on a contract up to mid-2010. According to that, Jol will earn approximately two million euros a year, thus becoming the best-paid boss in the club’s history.
Should the former Roda and Tottenham boss take over, Markus Schupp, a former HSV right midfielder, will step down as assistant coach to make way for the Montenegrin, as well as Jol’s brother, Cock, previously a Hotspur scout. Former Karlsruher, Wolfsburg and Lillestrøm custodian Claus Reitmaier will stay on as the goalkeepers’ trainer.
Van der Vaart on Jol - and future
Jol’s appointment could play some part in Rafael van der Vaart’s final decision on his future, although it is widely estimated he will leave Hamburg, with the likes of Barcelona, Juventus Turin and Chelsea all signalled as possible destinations.
“Every Dutchman fits well at HSV. If no club expresses an interest which corresponds to my conceptions then I’ll stay here.” the team captain has told Die Welt daily.
