It couldn't have had a better start.
Last season's 1st place vs 2nd place.
Week 1 derby, absolutely.

I think it will end as a draw, but will have goals for sure.

I hope Bayern gets a good win for a good start.
3pts in the first week are very important.

VfB Stuttgart : FC Schalke 04 -> Fantastic season opener, I would say Schalke are in better form but Stuttgart playing at home should give them the advantage.

Bayern München : Hansa Rostock -> Hopefully an easy win for Bayern

Bayer Leverkusen : Energie Cottbus -> Leverkusen to win, no chance for Cottbus

VfL Bochum : Werder Bremen -> Bochum always a strong team at home, they beat Werder last season if I'm not mistaken. Tough match in prospect for Werder here.

Hannover 96 : Hamburger SV -> Should be a great match, both teams looking good in the pre seaosn.

Eintracht Frankfurt : Hertha BSC -> Hertha didn't really sign anyone worth mentioning this season, but Eintracht aren't eally a very strong team either..

VfL Wolfsburg : Arminia Bielefeld
-> Magath's debut as Wolfsburg manager, I think he can get the win

1. FC Nürnberg : Karlsruher SC -> I fancy Karlsruher to cause an upset, wasn't really inpressed with Nurnberg in the Ligapokal

Borussia Dortmund : MSV Duisburg -> BVB are back, great team they have this season.

Default German Bundesliga Taster: Can Anyone Stop Bayern?

The Bundesliga kicks-off on Friday with the clash between champions Stuttgart and runners-up Schalke. However the question on everyone’s lips is: “Can anyone stop Bayern Munich?” Goal.com will bring you all the best action and latest news throughout the coming season. Mathew Burt sets the scene by taking a look at the title contenders.

After one of the most exciting title races in years, it was Stuttgart who finished Bundesliga champions. What looked to finally be Schalke’s championship was taken from them at the last moment for a second time.

This year the usual suspects will be in the hunt to lift the Bundesliga title, but overwhelming favourites are Bayern Munich after their €70 million spending spree. However the other clubs will be looking to make things difficult for the Bavarians.

For the bosses at Bayern Munich, not winning the Bundesliga is unthinkable. The target this season is to win the league, the Cup and the UEFA Cup. This should be quite within the grasp of Ottmar Hitzfeld’s stellar squad.

Eight new arrivals have given Bayern a squad which is the envy of many European clubs. Miroslav Klose, Luca Toni and Frank Ribéry are the highest profile arrivals at the Allianz Arena, but Hamit Altintop, Jose Ernesto Sosa Marcell Jansen and Zé Roberto will all bring an extra dimension to the team. Scoring goals should not be a problem, the question just remains as to whether Bayern can tighten up defensively and pick up more points away from home.

Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is currently only contracted to continue until the end of this season, will have to use all his experience if he is to keep all his players happy. Ahead of the European Championships internationals such as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski are going to want plenty of playing time in order to make sure they are included in Joachim Löw’s final squad.

Last season’s champions Stuttgart will relish the fact that they are seen as underdogs again this time around. Nobody was tipping them this time last year, but the Swabians, under the guidance of Armin Veh, sneaked up on the outside to pip Schalke at the last minute.

The loss of influential keeper Timo Hildebrand has been softened by the arrival of Raphael Schäfer from Cup winners Nürnberg, and despite interest from Juventus, Stuttgart have managed to hold on to defensive lynch-pin and captain Fernando Meira. Armin Veh has strengthened the squad with the signing of midfielder Yildiray Bastürk, defender Gledson, and strikers Ewerthon and Ciprian Marica.

The challenge for Stuttgart will be to cope with the extra burden of the Champions League added to the pressure which comes with being champions.

Schalke who were top of the league and champions elect for 12 weeks towards the end of the season will want to immediately put their disappointment behind them and finally secure that elusive Bundesliga title. Two losses in local derbies against Bochum and Dortmund undid all the good work of the season and allowed Stuttgart to overtake the ‘Königsblauen’ at the summit.

Mirko Slomka’s men will have an immediate chance for revenge when they meet Stuttgart in the opening game of the new season. Having missed out on the title and having lost influential players such as Hamit Altintop and Lincoln, there has been criticism of the lack of transfer activity at the Auf Schalke Arena. A move for Ghana’s Stephen Appiah failed due to financial constraints.

Ivan Rakitic has arrived from FC Basel to take up an attacking role, but it remains to be seen how quickly he will settle in the Bundesliga. Heiko Westermann and Jermaine Jones are the other major newcomers, but neither have set the Schalke faithful’s hearts racing. Last season may have been the Ruhr clubs best chance to win the league.

After much promise the season ended rather disappointingly for Werder Bremen. Their championship challenge faltered at the tail end of the season and a semi-final defeat in the UEFA Cup at the hands of Espanyol was a bitter pill to swallow.

However Werder won many fans along the way with their brand of attractive attacking football. They finished the season as the league’s top goalscorers with 76 goals. Miroslav Klose scored 13, while revelation of the season Diego also chipped in with 13. It remains to be seen how the squad copes with the defection of Klose to rivals Bayern.

Thomas Schaaf has signed Carlos Alberto as an additional attacking option for a club record €7.8 million, but he is not a direct replacement for Klose. Markus Rosenberg showed promise last year and Aaron Hunt gave indications that he is ready to make an impact on the Bundesliga. Hugo Almeida and the returning Ivan Klasnic will also be needed to fire in the goals if Werder are to challenge Bayern this season.

A huge bonus for Werder was the decision of Torsten Frings to reject the overtures of Juventus and commit his future to the Weser Stadion club.

Outside of the top four, it will be up to Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund to lead the way in pushing into the higher reaches of the table. Leverkusen have signed last season’s top-scorer Theofanis Gekas and have also added quality to their side with the acquisition of Lukas Sinkiewicz, Arturo Vidal and Manuel Friedrich in defence. Trainer Michael Skibbe will be hoping Bernd Schneider can reproduce his sparkling form from last season to keep Bayer in the top six.

Hamburg have done well to hold on to Rafael van der Vaart in what will surely be his last season. The major summer capture for HSV has been that of Mohamed Zidan from Mainz. The Egyptian really made people take note of him last season with 13 goals. With quality players like van der Vaart, Kompany, Sorin, and Zidan, Hamburg will be looking to improve on last term’s seventh place finish and make a return to the Champions League.

Sleeping giants Borussia Dortmund seem to have found the right coach in Thomas Doll and will be looking to give their passionate supporters something to shout about. The loss of Metzelder is a serious blow and their defence looks rather old with the aquisition of Kovac from Juventus. However if Alex Frei and Diego Klimowicz can fire in the goals and Mladen Petric can settle quickly then expect Dortmund to improve.

Cup winners Nürnberg have lost goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer to Stuttgart, but have signed the dangerous Greek striker Angelos Charisteas from Feyenoord to give them another attacking option. The arrival of Zvjezdan Misimovic from Bochum is a boost for their midfield. Coach Hans Meyer will need veteran Thomas Galasek and defender Andreas Wolf to reproduce their consistent form of last season.

Bochum will do well to repeat their more than respectable eighth place finish. Whether Stanislav Sestak can adequately replace Gekas is a doubt. Coach Marcel Koller called Gekas his ‘life insurance’ last season. Bochum will be hoping that that their life in the top flight will not be endangered this season.

Perennial under-achievers Hertha Berlin have done nothing in the transfer market to suggest an improvement on last year. All does not appear well in the Hertha camp, with the banishment of Van Burik and the losses of Kevin-Prince Boateng and Bastürk. New coach Lucien Favre may wish he’d stayed with FC Zurich.

Energie Cottbus under the tutelage of Petrick Sander were one of the surprise packages last season. Promoted but favourites to face relegation they secured their Bundesliga status with some ease. However the loss of McKenna, Radu, and Munteanu will see them struggle to avoid the dreaded ‘second season syndrome’.

Hannover, Arminia Bielefeld, and Eintracht Frankfurt will all be battling it out for mid-table security. Hannover will welcome the goals of new signing Mike Hanke. The loss of defender Heiko Westermann for Bielefeld will be a blow they need to recover from quickly.

VfL Wolfsburg under Felix Magath will surely improve although talk of pushing for the Champions League seems rather ambitious.

Newly promoted Hansa Rostock, Karlsruher SC, and MSV Duisburg will do well to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. A good start is essential for all three. Duisburg have taken a gamble in bringing in former Bundesliga top-scorer Ailton. Karlsruhe have done well to secure the talents of Andreas Görlitz from Bayern Munich. Each of the newcomers will want to emulate the achievements of Cottbus last season.

All in all we are set for another exciting season in the German Bundesliga. Record crowds will be flocking to matches to see for themselves whether the title is a foregone conclusion for Bayern, or whether one of the other challengers can push them all the way.

Let the games begin!

Default Bundesliga Weekend Preview: Clash Of The Titans In Season Opener

The new Bundesliga season kicks-off with a mouth-watering clash between champions Stuttgart and runners up Schalke. Matchday 1 awaits…

The Bundesliga begins afresh this weekend as Stuttgart look to defend their title. All the talk however is of Bayern Munich and whether anyone can prevent them winning their 21st league title.

The fixture generator could not have come up with a more tantalising game as the season gets underway on Friday evening. Stuttgart play host to Schalke. Last seasons champions take on the team who were champions elect for much of the season. Armin Veh’s side won the corresponding fixture last season 3-0 with two goals from Sami Khedira. Two weeks before the end of the season, Schalke stood top of the table, only to be dramatically usurped by Stuttgart. The ‘Knappen’ will be looking to gain revenge by beating the reigning champions in the opening clash and send out a message that they are title contenders this season.

Bayern Munich welcome newly promoted Hansa Rostock to the Allianz Arena as they look to set a winning tone for the rest of the season. The Bavarians have already picked up the League Cup and will look to put on a good show as Frank Ribéry is poised to make his Bundesliga debut along with Jose Ernesto Sosa. Brazilian Zé Roberto will make a welcome return to the Allianz Arena, but Luca Toni looks set to miss out through injury.

The game may prove a real baptism as Rostock return to the top-flight after a two year absence. Hansa have pretty much kept last year’s squad, losing only defender Gledson and keeper Schober. 35 year old Stefan Beinlich will need to use all his experience if the new boys are to get anything out of the game.

Werder Bremen face a tricky away trip to Bochum, who face life without Bundesliga top-scorer Theofanis Gekas. But then Werder have to face up to life without Miroslav Klose. Werder were the best attacking side in the Bundesliga last season scoring 76 goals and were also the best side away from home picking up 32 points. Torsten Frings remains combative in midfield following a brief dalliance with Juventus, while Werder have signed mercurial attacking midfielder Carlos Alberto to take their Brazilian contingent to three.

Thomas Schaaf’s side thrashed Bochum 6-0 in the corresponding fixture last season so will be confident of a win. The loss of Zvjezdan Misimovic is a big blow for Bochum’s midfield.

Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to break into the top four this season and qualify for the Champions League. A home tie against Energie Cottbus kicks-off their season and the fans at the Bay-Arena will want to see a winning start. Their defence has been completely revamped with the signings of Castro, Sinkiewicz, Manuel Friedrich, and the highly promising Vidal.

With a midfield mixing experience (Ramelow, Schneider) and youth (Kießling, Barnetta) and Gekas scoring goals, Leverkusen should pose a problem for the East German side. How big a blow the loss of McKenna, Munteanu, and Radu is for Cottbus will be quickly revealed this season. The new signings made will have to settle in fast if the ‘Lausitzer’ are to avoid second season syndrome and slip down the table into a relegation fight.

Hamburg make the short trip south to face Hannover at the AWD Arena. The club made a miraculous recovery last season after propping up the table at the end of January. Huub Stevens took over from Thomas Doll and HSV qualified for Europe through the Intertoto Cup. Mohamed Zidan has arrived from relegated Mainz and joins a talented squad which has Rafael van der Vaart as its star attraction. Hannover trainer Dieter Hecking has the same squad as last season with the additions of forwards Benny Lauth and Mike Hanke.

Perennial under-achievers Eintracht Frankfurt take on another big club who have failed to satisfy their fans in recent years. Hertha Berlin are the visitors to the Commerzbank Arena as Friedhelm Funkel sets out to bring Frankfurt out of the doldrums. They have failed to finish in the top half of the table in the last 10 seasons. They have lost midfielder Jermaine Jones, but have brought in Junichi Inamoto and Mehdi Mahdavikia.

Hertha now have Lucien Favre at the helm and he will want to improve on last year’s 10th place. The loss of Kevin Boateng is a real blow, but they still have the dangerous Pantelic upfront.

Wolfsburg host Bielefeld in Felix Magath’s return to Bundesliga management. The former Bayern coach will want to prove his doubters wrong and achieve success at the Volkswagen Arena. He has signed two highly effective Rumanians from Cottbus in Munteanu and Radu, and has splashed-out on a host of youngsters to boost his squad. Wolfsburg finished only one place away from the drop zone last season, which is not acceptable for a club with their ambitions.

Bielefeld have lost defensive pillar Heiko Westermann, but see Croatian Andre Mijatovic as his ready made replacement. A respectable 12th place was achieved last season and they will be happy with a similar ending this year.

On Sunday last season’s second division champions Karlsruher face a tough away trip to the Easy-Credit Stadion to take on Cup winners Nürnberg. KSC have lost last year’s 19 goal top scorer Federico to Dortmund, but still have Albanian Edmond Kapllani who should pose a threat. Back in the top flight for the first time since 1996/97, Karlsruher will want to get off to a good start.

‘Der Klub’ excelled last season finishing 6th and going on to beat Stuttgart in the Cup final. Hans Meyer has brought Greek striker Angelos Charisteas back to the Bundesliga and will hope for an immediate return of goals.

The final game of week 1 sees Borussia Dortmund host promoted Duisburg. The Signal-Iduna Park will be packed to the rafters as the BVB faithful welcome in the new season. Trainer Thomas Doll has improved his squad with the additions of Petric, Federico, and Blaszczykowski and will be looking for a European place this season.

New boys Duisburg may be seen as candidates for an immediate return to the second division, but Rudi Bommer will be hoping to pick up enough points to ensure survival. If Ailton can make a scoring return to the Bundesliga, then that goal may be achieved. Duisburg has a radically different squad this season having made ten new signings in the summer.

Default Season starts with a shootout

We want more! VfB Stuttgart and Schalke 04 kick off the season with a bang and battle to a draw after 90 minutes of quick paced action.

Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart didn't begin the 45th Bundesliga season the way they'd hoped to.

Just three months after winning the championship, VfB had to settle for a 2-2 (0-1) result against last year's runners-up Schalke 04 in the much anticipated match to start the season.

Tide turned quickly

After Levan Kobiaschvili (25th min.) had taken the lead off a blocked shot, Sami Khedira (63rd min.) and Pavel Pardo (67th min/penalty kick) hit twice inside of five minutes to turn the tide. New addition Ivan Rakitic scored the equaliser in the 76th minute.

The Royal Blues were looking like they were on their way to victory after holding on to a lead after Kobiaschvili scored off a ball deflected by Roberto Hilbert. But Stuttgart turned it around.

Rakitic seals it

The momentum changed quickly in the second half. With the lead, Schalke were confident and needed to capitalise. Christian Pander just missed a goal (54th min.) with a free kick. Three minutes later Stuttgart keeper Raphael Schäfer made a save against Fabian Ernst.

Croatian addition Ivan Rakitic spent the first part of the match on the bench before substituting in in the second half and underscoring his level of play with a goal to seal the match at 2-2.

Default In full flow

One day after the curtain-raiser the 45th Bundesliga season is gaining momentum with no less than six matches on Saturday afternoon!

FC Bayern München - FC Hansa Rostock

FC Bayern go into the new Bundesliga season full of confidence after winning the PREMIERE League Cup.

"Life gets serious from now on. It's time to start putting points on the board", head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld demands.

Promoted Hansa are back in the Bundesliga after a two-year absence.

"We want to transform our ideas of modern football in this match too, even if Bayern surely want to make quite a splash immediately", Hansa head coach Frank Pagelsdorf says.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Energie Cottbus

UEFA Cup participants Bayer have already something to make up for after exiting the DFB Cup against FC St. Pauli.

"We have a home match. Only three points count", Bayer head coach Michael Skibbe demands.

Energie go into their second straight season in the top flight and hope to build on their 13th place.

Cottbus are without Vragel da Silva (suspended) and probably Stanislav Angelov (no FIFA clearance yet).

VfL Bochum - Werder Bremen

Bochum have something to make up for after they lost both matches against Werder last term, 3-0 away and 6-0 at home.

"It's nice to start in front of a sell-out crowd, and that's what I will tell the players. If we deliver a good performance, the people will come again and again", VfL head coach Marcel Koller says.

Werder will take on Dynamo Zagreb for a place in the UEFA Champions League proper next week, but now it's about a good start into the league.

"We are ready for the game in Bochum. We have high expectations here despite the problems we've had. With the players we have available to us, we have a strong side", Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf remarks.

Hannover 96 - Hamburger SV

96 host HSV for the Northern derby. Hanover have played a great pre-season, including a 3-0 win over Real Madrid.

"That would count for nothing if we lose against HSV", 96 head coach Dieter Hecking clarifies, but the "Reds" have not lost any of their last nine matches against Hamburg.

Hamburger SV have had a successful season so far, reaching the 2nd round of the DFB Cup and the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto Cup.

HSV haven't won in Hanover for "19 years? That has to change. We have a very strong team", HSV defender Bastian Reinhardt demands.

Eintracht Frankfurt - Hertha BSC

Frankfurt's injury-ridden pre-season has been far from ideal, but Eintracht want to put that behind them with a win over Hertha.

"There is a thrill of anticipation. The players are fired up to gou out and play in front of full terraces again", Eintracht head coach Friedhelm Funkel reports.

Hertha will play their first Bundesliga match under new head coach Lucien Favre.

"I'm looking forward to the match in the sold-out stadium. The team have worked very well, but they still need time to transform my new methods", Favre says.

VfL Wolfsburg - Arminia Bielefeld

The "Wolves" start into their first season under new head coach Felix Magath.

"´We will play well and score three goals which will be enough for our first win of the season", VfL captain Marcelinho reckons.

Arminia finished the last season in 12th place with a tremendous run-in, after quite a few people had already written them off.

"The Wolves have a lot of individual quality and are capable of doing well", Arminia head coach Ernst Middendorp acknowledges.

31' [1 - 0] I. Amanatidis

Hannover 0 - 1 Hamburg SV
23' [0 - 1] C. Benjamin

Wolfsburg 0 - 1 Arminia Bielefeld
38' [0 - 1] A. Wichniarek

Def some surprising results there.
Leverkusen looks poor, I don't know whats up with them.

Bremen doing good. Damn.
Sanogo scores again.

Ha, Frankfurt leading there.

Not surprised that Hamburg is winning.
But I expect Hannover to equalize soon.
I hope not though, I hate them fucks.

Totally surprised from Arminia.
Hello, Felix?
