Default Skipper to the rescue

A fortunate goal by captain Tomas Galasek sent 1. FC Nürnberg on their way to an important home win over Borussia Dortmund.

1 FC Nürnberg picked up a valuable win at home against Dortmund. They won the game 2:0 (1:0) but still remain in one of the the relegation spots.

Tomas Galasek (10.) and Angelos Charisteas (90.) scored the goals for the home side in front of 41.020 fans. BVB`s misery was completed with the dismissal of Markus Bzenska in the 86th minute for two bookings.

The home side started the game brightly and their skipper smashed home the opener from 25 meters out. Dominik Rheinhardt had three good chances to extend the lead but failed to do so. It was left to the Greek, Charisteas to wrap the game up at the death.

The home fans will be hoping that the victory kick starts their season. The defeat heaps even more pressure on BVB coach, Thomas Doll.

Default Bundesliga Weekend Preview: Round 15

Another busy round of Bundesliga action gets underway this weekend with a mouth watering clash at the top of the table between Werder Bremen and Hamburg. The top match of Round 15 sees the two North German sides battling to usurp Bayern at the top of the table.

Elsewhere Stuttgart take on Borussia Dortmund, while Bayern Munich look to fend off the challenge from Werder and Hamburg with an away trip to Bielefeld on Sunday.

Hansa Rostock v Hannover

Hansa Rostock and Hannover gets things underway on Friday at the DKB Arena with the points important for both sides for varying reasons. Hansa are precariously just a point above the bottom three, and a win would drag them that little bit further up the table.

Dieter Hecking’s Hannover side on the other hand are just below the European places in 8th and a win is important for them as they look to keep pace with fellow challengers Schalke and Stuttgart, who are a point ahead of them.

Stuttgart v Borussia Dortmund

A few weeks ago all the talk was of a crisis at Stuttgart with the club apparently on a downward slide. The boot now seems to be on the other foot, with Dortmund the club now in their own ‘mini-crisis’.

Stuttgart having beaten Bayern Munich in Week 13, which was followed up with another win last week against Frankfurt. VfB’s first victory in the Champions League on Tuesday will have given Armin Veh’s side an added confidence boost ahead of the arrival of Dortmund.

BVB on the other hand are in freefall having won only two of their previous ten games, suffering five defeats along the way. Trainer Thomas Doll is likely to come under increased pressure the run continue against Stuttgart. They will be buoyed however by the corresponding result from last season, which saw them triumph 3-1 at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion.

Schalke v Bochum

Schalke turn their attention back to the Bundesliga following their midweek trip to Spain in the Champions League to face Valencia. The Königsblauen are lurking down in sixth place, but already find themselves nine points adrift of Bayern.

Trainer Mirko Slomka came out last week demanding a run a of positive results leading into the winter break and their 3-2 win over Hannover was the start. He will be looking to continue the run with three points against Bochum.

VfL currently lie tenth and the result on Saturday could see them either climb the table into the higher echelons, or be dragged down nearer to the relegation zone. Marcell Koller will be hoping the former happens.

Werder Bremen v Hamburg

The North German derby sees second place Werder Bremen hosting third place Hamburg at the Weser Stadion in the pick of the weekend’s action. Both sides are currently on 30 points and could take over at the top of the table with a win (if Bayern fail to beat Bielefeld on Sunday).

Both sides were victorious in European competition in midweek, although it can be argued that Werder had by far the more strenuous task. Their 3-2 victory over Spanish giants Real Madrid at the Weser Stadion has kept alive their slim hopes of qualifying for the next stage of this season’s competition.

Hamburg on the other hand had a relatively easy time of it in their Uefa Cup tie with French side Rennes. They eased to a rather comfortable 3-0 win, which was a great birthday present for trainer Huub Stevens and has set them up nicely for their short trip South.

Hertha Berlin v Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen travel to the capital on Saturday looking to maintain their current form and cement their place as a serious contender for European qualification this season. They currently lie fifth, but have both Schalke and Stuttgart hot on their tails.

The ‘Werkself’ had a rest from Uefa Cup action this week so will not be able to blame fatigue for any dip of form at the Olympiastadion. The loss of Arturo Vidal to injury will be a blow to Michael Skibbe, although he does have the likes of Carsten Ramelow and Bernd Schneider available again.

The home side will be looking to arrest their current poor run, which has seen them lose five of their last ten Bundesliga matches. Last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Karlsruhe dragged them down to ninth in the table. The one positive note is the continued goalscoring form of Marko Pantelic, who bagged his seventh of the season last weekend.

Energie Cottbus v Karlsruhe

Energie Cottbus remain rooted to the bottom of the table, while Karlsruhe have continued their fantastic start to the season and find themselves in the lofty reaches of the table in 4th.

Last season’s surprise package, Cottbus, are having a nightmare start to the current campaign with only eight points and one win from 14 games. They are currently six points away from safety, so three points against KSC would go a long way to improving their situation.

Everybody is waiting to see when the Karlsruhe bubble is going to burst, but the signs at the moment are all positive for Edmund Becker’s side. Despite recent losses to Wolfsburg and Werder, KSC have kept winning their fair share of matches to hold onto their fourth spot.

The match will be the first meeting between the two sides in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg v Eintracht Frankfurt

‘Die Wölfe’ have a home tie against Eintracht Frankfurt to follow up their defeat at the Allianz Arena last weekend in Felix Magath’s return to his old club. Both sides find themselves in the wrong half of the table, but only two points separate them.

Last season’s fixture ended 2-2, but in the previous five clashes, Eintracht failed to win or even score a goal.

Josué is likely to return to the team for Wolfsburg, while there may also be a place for Madlung alongside Ricardo Costa in defence. ‘Die Adler’ look set to be without Albert Streit and Michael Thurk.

Arminia Bielefeld v Bayern Munich

If there is a winner at the Weser Stadion on Saturday between Werder Bremen and Hamburg, Bayern will start Sunday in second place. The pressure to perform against Ernst Middendorp’s side would therefore be increased.

The Bavarians returned to winning ways last weekend following their defeat at Stuttgart. A 2-1 win on Felix Magath’s return to the Allianz Arena was enough to fend off the pressure at the top from the chasing pack.

However, they could only manage a draw away to Braga in the Uefa Cup on Thursday, so perhaps the mini-crisis is not fully passed. Bielefeld will be hoping that this is a good time to face Bayern.

They themselves need the points having slid down from the lofty reaches of the table down to their current position of 14th- just three points clear of the drop-zone.

Duisburg v Nürnberg

Nürnberg finally gave Hans Meyer something to smile about last weekend with a much needed win over Dortmund, to end their run of five successive defeats in all competitions.

The three points however were not enough to lift ‘der Klub’ out of the drop-zone, so another three points are required against Duisburg, who lie three points behind them in 17th.

The Zebras have had a tough time of it on their return to the top flight, but will enter the game in confidence, knowing that fatigue may affect Nürnberg after the midweek Uefa Cup travels against Zenit St. Petersburg.

Default Hannover strike late for victory

Hannover scored three goals in the last six minutes to secure a 3-0 away win over struggling Hansa Rostock.

Frank Fahrenhorst, Mike Hanke and Jiri Stajner all hit the target late on to move Hannover up to sixth and leave Rostock hovering perilously close to the relegation zone.

Hanke could have put the visitors ahead in the second minute but his 20-yard effort was tipped around the post by Stefan Wachter.

Hannover's Szabolcs Huzsti then brilliantly beat two defenders in the 14th minute but could not apply the finish and fired wide from 25 yards.

Wachter got lucky with a save from Sergio Pinto's 20-yard effort on 17 minutes. Having done well to initially block the German's effort, the ball then trickled towards the goalline before the keeper recovered to collect the ball.

The home side's first chance came when Victor Agali brilliantly brought the ball down, turned and volleyed in the 37th minute but his shot deflected just over the crossbar.

Hanke saw his powerful 20-yard effort deflect narrowly wide off a defender three minutes before the break.

On 58 minutes, Agali's flick-on fell to Heath Pearce but the American could not quite prod the ball into the empty net.

Pearce was denied by goalkeeper Robert Enke five minutes later after he got clean through on the left of the penalty area, the keeper doing well to stop his powerful low shot.

Marc Stein's 70th-minute effort went straight at Enke as the home side started to dominate for the first time in the game.

Hanno Balitsch's 76th-minute cross found Vahid Hashemian who prodded wide from six yards.

Hannover finally went in front on 84 minutes when Huszti's 35-yard free-kick spun off the wall, wrong-footing Wachter, and Fahrenhorst headed home from six yards.

Hanke doubled the visitors' advantage just two minutes later when Hashemian cut back to Silvio Schroter, whose shot rebounded off the keeper and the post, allowing the Germany international to tap into an empty net.

Substitute Stajner made it three two minutes from time when he turned in Hashemian's cut-back.

Default Saturday preview

On Saturday, the battle for UEFA Cup spots takes center stage in the Bundesliga. bundesliga.de takes a look at the upcoming action.

VfB Stuttgart - Borussia Dortmund

VfB Stuttgart will be looking for their fifth Bundesliga win in a row, after beating Glasgow Rangers 3:2 in Champions league play this week. "If we win our last three games before the winter break, we'll have only one point less than at the same time last year. That gives us hope", said VfB boss Erwin Staudt.

Dortmund haven't scored a goal in seven of their last eight games against Stuttgart. But they've only lost one of their past four games against VfB. Stuttgart, meanwhile, have lost only one of the 22 home games they've played since going down 3:1 to Dortmund at home on August 26, 2006.

Schalke 04 - VfL Bochum

Schalke are winless in their last three home games, and have won only one of their last six Bundesliga games. Last season, the S04 defense held opponents scoreless 14 times; this year, only three times so far. Bochum meanwhile have won the past three games, scoring ten goals, five of them in the first five minutes of games (the most in the league).

Bochum hope Schalke will buckle under the strain, after their scoreless draw with FC Valencia in Champions League play this week. "If we get any chances, we have to take them in order to make a surprise possible, said VfL coach Marcel Koller.

Hertha BSC - Bayer Leverkusen

Hertha have lost three out of their past four meetings with Bayer, giving up twelve goals in the process, and have beaten them only twice since getting back into the Bundesliga in 1997. The Berliners' record against Leverkusen is worse than against any other club.

But Hertha have won their past two home games and haven't given up a goal at Olympic Stadium in 286 minutes of play.

Only Hamburg and München have given up fewer away goals than Bayer (7). And Leverkusen will have the services of Bernd Schneider once again this weekend. The German international was out for ten weeks with a knee injury.

Energie Cottbus - Karlsruher SC

In their battle for a UEFA Cup spot, Karlsruher SC are hoping for their fifth away win of the season against cellar dwellers Energie Cottbus. "I'm expecting a rock-hard game. Cottbus is going to try to batter us down", said KSC coach Edmund Becker.

Karlsruhe haven't found the back of the net in their past two away games, but they've only lost once in their past eight games.

VfL Wolfsburg - Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt are reeling from injuries and illness going into the match against Wolfsburg. Aleksandar Vasoski, Albert Streit, Alexander Meier, Marcel Heller and Christoph Preuß have been missing. Now add to them Michael Thurk, Markus Weissenberger, Junichi Inamoto and probably Naohiro Takahara.

Wolfsburg have scored in every game this season, but have lost their past three, giving up nine goals. And aside from the three teams in the drop zone, they are the least successful home team in the league, with only eight points.

Werder Bremen - Hamburger SV

Hamburg haven't lost in 14 competitive games, and are coming off a 3:0 win over Stade Rennes in UEFA Cup play. "We want to win in Bremen. Even if Werder are playing well at the moment", said defender Joris Mathijsen.

Bremen demonstrated just how strong they are with their 3:2 victory over Real Madrid. With only one loss in their past ten competitive games, they now want to bring down their bitter north German rivals.

Default Bundesliga Round-Up: Werder Beat Hamburg To Go Top, Dortmund Stun Stuttgart

Werder Bremen beat Hamburg 2-1 in the Nord-derby to go top of the league- albeit for 24 hours. There were important wins for Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen and Dortmund.

Energie Cottbus grabbed a rare win, which has taken them off the bottom of the pile.

VfB Stuttgart 1 Borussia Dortmund 2

An entertaining match at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion finished with Dortmund inflicting a 2-1 defeat on VfB- their second of the season at home for the Swabians.

The first half saw both teams, but predominantly Dortmund attacking and it was the visitors who took the lead after 11 minutes. A Dede cross was turned into his own net by an unlucky Delpierre.

However VfB were back on level terms before the interval with Fernando heading in a Hitzlsperger corner on 35 minutes. The second half proved just as entertaining as the first, and Dortmund scored a second with 12 minutes remaining.

Kringe laid the ball off to Federico, whose low cross picked out Petric coming in on the far post to slot in. The defeat is Stuttgart’s second home loss of the season and has brought to an end their recent revival.

Schalke 1 Bochum 0

Schalke gained the second win that Mirko Slomka has demanded as they look to end the first half of the season positively.

The Königsblauen took the lead after 32 minutes rather predictably from a set-piece. Rakitic flighted in a free-kick from the right, and with Drsek not getting tight enough to Bordon, Schalke’s captain headed in past a helpless Rene Renno.

Halil Altintop missed an absolute sitter four minutes before the break, firing over the bar after Kuranyi had laid off a Rakitic cross. In the end, one goal was enough to seal all three points for ‘die Knappen’.

Werder Bremen 1 Hamburg 0

Werder took the lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win the Nord-derby against Hamburg.

Thomas Schaaf’s side took the lead on the quarter of an hour mark through Sanogo. Vranjes showed great vision as he fed the Ivorian, who left Frank Rost with no chance with a right-foot shot.

Bremen enjoyed more possession and territory, but were pegged back on 60 minutes through an equaliser from van der Vaart. Stand-in keeper Vander cleared the ball straight to the Dutchman who volleyed in from 25 meters.

HSV however were only level for three minutes as Pasanen put the hosts back in front after 64 minutes. Aaron Hunt played the ball to Pasanen, whose attempt at a cross into the middle clipped off Kompany and deflected past Rost and into the Hamburg goal.

Hertha Berlin 0 Bayer Leverkusen 3

Leverkusen came away from the Olympiastadion with a valuable 3-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.

The lead was given to them after half an hour by injury returnee Carsten Ramelow, who fired in an unstoppable shot following some confusion in the Berlin back row after a free-kick. A second goal arrived five minutes into the second half after some good build up play from Barbarez and Freier. Barnetta was the recipient slotting in easily from close range.

Insult was added to injury in the final minute when Sergei Barbarez scored a third after good work from Bernd Schneider, who was making his long-awaited return from injury.

Energie Cottbus 2 Karlsruhe 0

Bojan Prasnikar’s Cottbus finally gained a vital three points with a 2-0 win over Karlsruhe. The result belied the team’s league positions with Cottbus bottom at the start of play and KSC fourth.

Angelov struck the first goal for Energie on 62 minutes, heading in an inviting cross from fellow countryman Rangelov. The favour was returned on 75 minutes with Angelov turning provider for Rangelov.

The forward latched onto a superb through ball before steering the ball past Kornetzky. The win sees Cottbus off the bottom of the table.

Wolfsburg 2 Eintracht Frankfurt 2

Four goals were shared at the Volkswagen Arena as Wolfsburg and Frankfurt ended all-square.

Christian Gentner headed the home side ahead on six minutes, but Wolfsburg were pegged back on 35 minutes when Chris headed in.

Edin Dzeko put Felix Magath’s side back in front three minutes into the second half, but were again unable to keep their advantage with Fink grabbing another equaliser on 52 minutes. There were no more goals as the spoils were shared.

Some very surprising results today.

Shocking win that of Cottbus against Karlsruhe. Leverkusen won easier than I thought.
Not really surprised of Stuttgart's defeat.
Hated to see Werder win, I wanted the match to finish as a draw.
The draw at Wolfsburg v Frankfurt is no surprise at all.

Default Sunday preview

While Nürnberg seek their first victory in Duisburg since 1965, FCB are looking to storm the Schüco Arena. bundesliga.de previews both Sunday matches.

Arminia Bielefeld - FC Bayern

Bayern enjoyed seven wins in their first eight away matches in Bielefeld, but only two victories in the following seven matches. Arminia have only won one of the past nine matches (six defeats) and were unable to score in six showings.

Bayern are the most successful club on the road but have only scored one goal in their past two away matches.

Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has warned his team: "This will be a battle. If we play like we did in Braga, it'll be difficult. We must play our best match."

Arminia are seeking to keep the match close and then hope for a miracle. Petr Gabriel explained it this way: "If we can keep it 0-0 for a long time, then maybe we will do something miraculous."

Injury update

Bayern are in good shape despite being without Lucio (red card), the injured Marcell Jansen and the rehabbing Bastian Schweinsteiger. Lukas Podolski is back in the line-up after suffering a toe injury.

For Arminia, the loss of Matthias Langkamp and Christian Eigler will not be easy to compensate for. On a positive note, Petr Gabriel returns to the defence after having a long-term injury.

MSV Duisburg - 1.FC Nürnberg

A penalty shot by Stefan Reisch gave Nürnberg their last victory (2-1) in Duisburg since December 29, 1965. In the ten encounters since then, FC have managed only one point with a 1-1 result on April 24, 1999.

But MSV have lost nine of their last ten matches, recently four in a row, and six of seven home matches. They have only scored twice in their last five home appearances.

Injury update

Nürnberg coach Hans Meyer has to reshape his starting line-up again: Peer Kluge is suspended, and Australian player Dario Vidosic will take his place. Chhunly Pagenburg will play for Ivan Saenko, who was injured in the second half of the match against St. Petersburg.

Captain Thomas Galasek and defender Andreas Wolf have not regressed with their injuries. "Both have minor complaints, but they haven't got worse", explained Meyer.

Opposing coach Rudi Bommer has less to worry about. Apart from Alexander Meyer (knee), only Nils-Ole Book is out (back). Mihai Tararache and Björn Schlicke are back after having been suspended.

Manasseh Ishiaku and Roque Junior have returned to training but it's unclear if they will start. Ivica Grlics is questionable (back).
