Leverkusen Down Wolfsburg, More Woe For Nürnberg
Bayer Leverkusen prevailed in the battle at the Volkswagen Arena with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Felix Magath's Wolfsburg.
Arminia Bielefeld came from a goal down to defeat a struggling Nürnberg side, who are now firmly rooted in a relegation dogfight.
Wolfsburg 1 Bayer Leverkusen 2
The match started at a high pace with both sides on the attack and creating chances. Stefan Kießling had a good headed chance after just two minutes, while Grafite forced Rene Adler into a save on six minutes with another headed chance.
With less than ten minutes on the clock, the visitors had another great chance through Rolfes, but the midfielder was unable to find the target from close range after being played in by Barbarez. It seemed only a matter of time before the first goal arrived.
Rene Adler was the busier of the two keepers with Felix Magath’s side pressing forward at every opportunity. Marcelinho was a threat from set-pieces, while Pole Krzynowek was also looking dangerous.
However it was the visitors who scored the first goal of the afternoon. On 37 minutes Sergej Barbarez was given far too much space on the right before crossing into the penalty area with his left-foot. Kießling was a little lucky against Ricardo Costa shooting well, Jentzsch saved well but Tranquilo Barnetta was on hand to fire in the rebound.
Seven minutes into the second period and the ‘Werkself’ doubled their lead. Simon Jentzsch again saved well, this time from Vidal, but Kießling followed up well to slot home.
The 2-0 lead saw Michael Skibbe’s side more reluctant to press forward and it became harder for ‘die Wölfe’ to break them down as they committed more men to defence.
However, with 20 minutes remaining, the host did get their noses back into the game with an unfortunate own goal from Manuel Friedrich. Riether fizzed in a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box, where Friedrich hung out his left leg to clear. A nasty deflection left Rene Adler with no chance.
Wolfsburg were not giving up on the game and only a superb save from Adler from a Marcelinho free kick denied the home side an equaliser after 81 minutes. But then two minutes from time Vidal almost sealed the three points, only to see his shot cannon back off the post.
In the end the history of goals in the fixture continued, but it was Leverkusen who left the happier of the two sides, and who moved into the top five as a result.
0-1 Barnetta (37)
0-2 Kießling (52)
1-2 Friedrich (70 og)
Wolfsburg: Jentzsch, Riether, Madlung, Ricardo Costa, Schäfer (Simunek), Josué (Santana), Gentner, Dejagah (Radu), Marcelinho, Krzynowek, Grafite
Bayer Leverkusen: Adler, Castro, Friedrich, Haggui, Sarpei (Gresko), Vidal, Rolfes, Freier (Sinkiewicz), Barbarez (Ramelow), Barnetta, Kießling
Arminia Bielefeld 3 Nürnberg 1
Bielefeld heaped yet more problems on an already under-pressure Hans Meyer with a 3-1 home win. Both sides played reasonably well in the first period but cancelled each other out.
Two minutes before the break, the visitors took the lead through Andreas Wolf. The defender beat Langkamp to the ball following a cross from Misimovic after a corner, heading in past Hain in the Bielefeld goal.
The home side came out fired up for the second half and their efforts were rewarded just after the hour mark with the equaliser. Kamper crossed from the right to the far post where Kauf beat Reinhardt in the air to head past Blazek.
The goal seemed to fire up Ernst Middendorp’s side and they continued to press ‘der Klub’ backwards. The visitors looked ever more uncomfortable at the back and goalscorer Wolf was saved the embarrassment of an own goal by the quick reactions of Blazek after he deflected a Kirch cross goalwards.
Bielefeld were then rewarded for their attacking momentum with a second goal after 76 with Wichniarek heading in a Sibusiso Zuma cross from the right. It was the least their second half performance deserved.
The win was then sealed a minute into injury time with substitute Zuma firing in the third goal of the afternoon for Arminia to inflict yet more misery on Hans Meyer’s struggling side.
0-1 Wolf (43)
1-1 Kauf (63)
2-1 Wichniarek (76)
3-1 Zuma (91)
Arminia Bielefeld: Hain, Kirch, Kucera, Langkamp, Schuler, Kauf, Kamper (Korzynietz), Marx, Halfar (Kobylik), Böhme (Zuma), Wichniarek
Nürnberg: Blazek, Reinhardt, Wolf, Glauber (Beauchamp), Schmidt, Mnari (Kennedy), Galasek, Misimovic, Kluge, Saenko (Pagenburg), Mintal

KSC cement fourth place
Karlsruher SC staged a great second-half comeback to defeat Hertha BSC. Striker Sebastian Freis bagged the match-winner.
KSC remain the Bundesliga's surprise team. The promoted team opened matchday 14 with a deserved 2-1 home win over Hertha BSC.
KSC cemented fourth place with now 26 points, Hertha (19 points) stay in eighth place after their fourth successive away defeat.
29,217 fans in the Wildpark saw a KSC team that had to make do without Markus Miller, Christian Timm, Alexander Iashvili and Christopher Reinhard.
Dominating hosts
Hertha were without their Brazilian internationals Gilberto and Mineiro, and it showed from the beginning as KSC dominated the match.
Bradley Carnell (5), Edmond Kapllani (7), Carnell (23), Kapllani (23, 27), Christian Eichner (24) and Sebastian Freis (27) all missed opportunities to fire the hosts ahead.
Number seven for Pantelic
So it was Marko Pantelic's turn to break the deadlock for Hertha with a fierce right-footed shot from 23 metres, completely against the run of play.
The hosts were shell-shocked, but then staged an impressive second-half comeback. Tamas Hajnal (56) scored a beauty on the turn from Christian Eichner's left-wing cross to level the scores.
Freis winner
And Freis (66) hit the Berliners on the counter-attack from a great Kapllani pass, rounding Hertha keeper Jaroslav Drobny to bag the winner.
At 2-1 down Hertha never looked like finding an equaliser, and KSC held on with ease.

Saturday preview
Former Bayern coach Felix Magath returns with his new club Wolfsburg, chasing Werder play in Cottbus. bundesliga.de previews Saturday's games.
FC Bayern München - VfL Wolfsburg
Leaders FC Bayern hope to get back to winning ways after three draws and one defeat in their last four competitive matches.
"We want to stay top of the league and hopefully extend our lead. Our initial target this term is to be top going into the winter break, and we'll need a win for that", FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge demanded.
Wolfsburg have lost their last two matches and dropped to eleventh in the standings.
"Nobody expects us to win or even take a point home with us against Bayern, so in reality, it is something of an easy game for us. We have played well on our travels so far this season and we must continue to do so on Saturday", "Wolves" coach Felix Magath said.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen - MSV Duisburg
Two successive wins have seen Bayer climb into fifth place.
"We won't underestimate them. But we're fifth and of course we want to beat Duisburg - no matter what happens", Leverkusen's Paul Freier declared.
17th-placed MSV have lost their last three matches without scoring a single goal.
Coach Rudi Bommer will have to make do without Brazilian Roque Junior (adductor strain). "We invest an awful lot and have not been rewarded with the deserved points. That has to change now", Bommer demanded.
VfL Bochum - Arminia Bielefeld
VfL have climbed into twelfth place with two successive victories. Head coach Marcel Koller is expected to stick to Rene Renno in goal - but that's not dead certain.
"We have won two matches with Rene. That certainly offers a good position for him - perhaps even the pole position. Yet, the others have noticed as well that something is changing", Koller said.
14th-placed Arminia have bounced back from seven winless matches by beating 1. FC Nürnberg before the international break.
Arminia coach Ernst Middendorp has to make do without Daniel Halfar, Christian Eigler and Tobias Rau.
Hannover 96 - FC Schalke 04
96 have dropped to sixth place after their six-match unbeaten run came to an end with defeat in Berlin.
"Schalke are not exactly at the top of their form at the moment. Playing at home, with the fans behind us, we'll be looking to keep the points here", Hanover's Christian Schulz told bundesliga.de.
Schalke are in seventh place and have failed to win any of their last five Bundesliga matches.
"I'm looking forward to the match because I can see that the team are fired up to get going again", Schalke coach Mirko Slomka commented.
Energie Cottbus - Werder Bremen
Bottom club Energie hope to build on their 1-0 win over Schalke in their last home match.
"We'll be looking for opportunities, even against such a strong team. We can't and don't want to play catenaccio, we'll try to score goals and win the match", Energie coach Bojan Prasnikar commented.
Werder have stormed into second place with six wins from eight unbeaten matches, but they will to make do without Carlos Alberto and Boubacar Sanogo after the pair were suspended by coach Thomas Schaaf for a brawl in training.
Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic will be back in the squad after an eleven-month absence. "I just hope we are offensively better than we were eight months ago (0-0, ed.) and can find a way through this time", Schaaf said.
Eintracht Frankfurt - VfB Stuttgart
Eintracht (10th) have not won any of their last four matches, but have drawn three of those.
"If we don't make mistakes, play with commitment and take our chances, we'll have a chance of winning with our fantastic fans behind us", Eintracht coach Friedhelm Funkel declared.
Champions VfB have climbed into ninth place by winning three successive victories, including a 3-1 win over leaders Bayern.
VfB coach Armin Veh will be without Serdar Tasci and Yildiray Bastürk who have returned injured from their respective national teams.

Bundesliga Round-Up: Wins For Werder, Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Schalke
Round 14 of the Bundesliga saw Bayern return to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg. Although denied the chance to go top, Werder Bremen kept up the pressure on Bayern with a 2-0 win over bottom side Cottbus.
The recovery at Stuttgart goes from strength to strength after a convincing 4-1 away win at Frankfurt.
Bayern Munich 2 Wolfsburg 1
It turned out to be an unhappy return to the Allianz Arena for Felix Magath as he saw his Wolfsburg side defeated 2-1 by his former employers. Bayern showed a willingness to make up for the disappointing results from their past few games with a top display of attacking football.
Franck Ribéry was on top form as Bayern dominated the game, although a second half goal for the visitors could have put a different spin on the game had they gone on to equalise.
After continuous attacking impetus, Bayern took the lead through Klose on 35 minutes after good build-up play from Ribéry.
The Frenchman, in sublime form, scored Bayern’s second five minutes into the second half advancing from within his own half to score past Jentzsch. A goal from Dejagah on 70 minutes would have caused a few worries inside the Allianz Arena, but in the end Bayern held out for a well deserved three points to keep them at the top of the table ahead of Werder Bremen.
Energie Cottbus 0 Werder Bremen 2
Werder condemned Cottbus to yet another defeat running out 2-0 winners at the Stadion der Freundschaft. Even though they held out against Werder for over an hour, and had the better chances for the opening goal, it was Thomas Schaaf’s side who took the three points.
Werder took the lead after 63 minutes with a Diego penalty. Referee Gräfe was rather harsh in his decision following a tussle between Rosenberg and Cvitanovic in the penalty area. The Brazilian maestro however made no mistake from the spot-kick.
The Lausitzer were forced to press forward for the equaliser, and Werder punished them with a second goal seven minutes from time. Substitute Mosquera fooled Tremmel with a shot from the left when he expected a shot.
Tim Wiese produced two fine saves from Skela and Sörensen in the dying minutes to keep the score at 2-0.
Bayer Leverkusen 4 Duisburg 1
Leverkusen were forced to come from behind against Duisburg before eventually ending the game 4-1 victors. visitors a 10th minute lead to shock the home fans inside the Bay-Arena.
However, after the break the Werkself used their chances to score four unanswered goals to seal a valuable win.
Sergei Barbarez got the home side back in the game on 47 minutes, with Simon Rolfes giving them the lead on 66 minutes. With the momentum firmly on Bayer’s side Paul Freier grabbed a third, before Theofanis Gekas scored the fourth on 81 minutes to pull a more emphatic spin on the result.
Eintracht Frankfurt 1 Stuttgart 4
Stuttgart’s recovery continued at the Commerzbank Arena with a 4-1 victory. Following their home win over Bayern, the Swabians followed up with an equally impressive and confidence boosting show against Frankfurt.
The home actually took the lead through Köhler four minutes before the break, but were unable to hold the lead until half-time when Hilbert grabbed an instant equaliser.
The second half belonged to Armin Veh’s side as the fired in three further goals. Substitute Marica got the first three minutes after the restart, and Stuttgart’s third was scored by Thomas Hitzlsperger on 57 minutes.
The icing was put on the cake when Cacau grabbed a fourth during injury time to take VfB up to 7th.
Bochum 3 Bielefeld 0
Marcel Koller was a happy man as he left the Rewirpower Stadion having watched his side comfortably beat Bielefeld 3-0.
Two goals inside three first half minutes from Marcin Mieciel set the home side on the way to victory. A 12th minute strike following good work from Sestak was added to on the quarter hour mark by a second strike from the Pole.
The win was sealed for the home side when Christoph Dabrowski fired in a third ten minutes after the restart. The win sees Bochum up to 10th.
Hannover 2 Schalke 3
Schalke produced the win they were after in a topsy-turvy game at the AWD Arena.
Szabolcs Huszti gave the home side a 17th minute lead from the penalty spot only for Kevin Kuranyi to grab an equaliser shortly before half-time.
Kuranyi then shot the Königsblauen into the lead on 50 minutes only for the Hungarian Huszti to grab an equaliser three minutes later.
The win was sealed for the visitors with Halil Altintop firing in the winner from a Kuranyi assist after 62 minutes.

Sunday preview
Lowly DFB Cup winners 1. FC Nürnberg host Dortmund, HSV entertain Rostock. bundesliga.de previews Sunday's Bundesliga matches.
The pressure on Nuremberg and Hans Meyer grows. The DFB Cup winners hope for a win against Borussia Dortmund.
The hosts are five points behind safety going into matchday 14, and Meyer doesn't beat around the bush. "I expect a win", the FCN coach demands.
FCN have managed just a single win (5-1 over Frankfurt) in their last 15 competitive matches, but Meyer is still undisputed. "I know that he'll turn things around. The coach is good, and so is the squad", president Michael A. Roth told "kicker" magazine.
Doll demands "killer mentality"
Borussia themselves have underachieved with one win in their last eight matches. "Things will get tough if we lose", goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller knows.
Coach Thomas Doll demands a "killer mentality" in Nuremberg, a good hunting ground for BVB. The last defeat at the "Club" dates back to 1992.
German international Sebastian Kehl is expected to return to the starting line-up, his third attempt to bounce back from his recurrent injury problems.
Stevens keen to refocus
In Sunday's second Bundesliga match Hamburger SV want to maintain their good position in the standings.
A lot has been made of Huub Stevens' departure at the end of the season, now the coach wants to refocus on sporting things.
"We agreed that it's a non-issue from now on. We have quite a few goals to play for, and that's what we told the team", the Dutchman stressed.
Pagelsdorf returns
His Hansa counterpart is in focus, too, but for different reasons. Frank Pagelsdorf once led HSV to the Champions League during a four-year spell (1997 - 2001).
"These are things you never forget. I'm looking forward to the match, and I gladly look back upon the time", Pagelsdorf declared ahead of his first visit to the HSH Nordbank Arena as a visiting coach.
"It surely will be strange, but most certainly I'll find the right dressing room", Pagelsdorf said.
Line-ups as expected:
1. FC Nürnberg - Borussia Dortmund
Nuremberg: Blazek - Reinhardt, Wolf, Glauber, Engelhardt (Schmidt) - Galasek, Kluge - Misimovic, Mintal, Sajenko - Charisteas
Dortmund: Weidenfeller - Kringe, Brzenska, Kovac, Dede - Blaszczykowski, Tinga, Kehl, Buckley - Petric, Klimowicz
Hamburger SV - Hansa Rostock
Hamburg: Rost - Boateng, Reinhardt, Mathijsen, Atouba - Jarolim, Kompany (de Jong) - Trochowski, van der Vaart, Olic - Guerrero (Zidan)
Rostock: Wächter - Langen, Sebastian, Orestes, Stein - Beinlich (Bülow), Rathgeb - Dorn, Rahn - Agali, Kern
