Preview, 29 January matches
The DFB Cup is the shortest way into Europe, but the round of 16 won't be an easy one for the Bundesliga's leading teams.
Wuppertaler SV - FC Bayern
Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern will be without German internationals Marcell Jansen (rehab) and Lukas Podolski (disc prolapse). Bastian Schweinsteiger and Andreas Ottl are doubtful.
"The first match is always important to get going and find the rhythm. I'm convinced that we'll go through", FCB coach ottmar Hitzfeld said.
"We mustn't underestimate Wuppertal and have to play concentrated. We saw in Burghausen in the first round how difficult matches at Regional League sides can be", goalkeeper Oliver Kahn warned.
WSV are first in the Regional League North (third flight) and have already eliminated FC Erzgebirge Aue and Hertha BSC.
The underdogs will play the match in Schalke's Veltins Arena. More than 50,000 tickets were sold in Wuppertal alone.
1899 Hoffenheim - FC Hansa Rostock
Hoffenheim have beaten 2. Bundesliga rivals FC Augsburg and SpVgg Greuther Fürth in previous rounds.
"It's a special game, all players are really looking forward to the match", Hoffenheim coach Ralf Rangnick commented.
Bundesliga side Hansa have bagged a whopping 14 goals in the two previous rounds.
Gledson is suspended after his first-round sending off for VfB Stuttgart, and Kai Bülow is injured. "We're favourites to go through because we are the top-flight team", coach Frank Pagelsdorf insisted.
Alemannia Aachen - TSV 1860 München
Alemannia have a reputation for cup heroics, and they've already dumped out Bundesliga side VfL Bochum.
New coach Jürgen Seeberger will be on the bench during a competitive match for the first time.
TSV 1860 will have to make do without Antonio Di Salvo, Berkant Göktan, Markus Thorandt, Mate Ghvinianidze and Markus Schroth.
"It's a heated atmosphere at the Tivoli. Our chances increase the longer we'll keep it goalless", 1860 skipper Danny Schwarz commented.
Borussia Dortmund - Werder Bremen
Werder have a score to settle with BVB after losing 3-0 in Dortmund in the first half of the Bundesliga season.
Brazilian playmaker Diego has recovered from injury in time to face the Black-Yellows.
BVB are sweating over the fitness of Mladen Petric (hip), but goalkeeper Alexander Frei will be back in the squad for the first time since May.
"We have a great chance to qualify for Europe through the DFB Cup", German international Sebastian Kehl said.

DFB Pokal Round-Up: Bayern Overcome Plucky Wuppertal, 1860 Stage Comeback, Rostock Ou
The first set of matches in the German Cup third round were played tonight with favourites Bayern Munich eventually beating a plucky Wuppertal side 5-2 at the Veltins Arena. Elsewhere 1860 Munich staged a superb comeback from two goals down, while Rostock crashed out at the hands of Hoffenheim.
Wuppertal 2 Bayern Munich 5
Wuppertal from the Regionalliga Nord made it tough for Bayern Munich at the Veltins Arena in front of a massive 61,000 crowd before going down to a 5-2 defeat.
The game was forced to kick-off 15 minutes late due to traffic congestion but once underway, Bayern wasted no time at all in turning their first chance on 15 minutes into a goal.
A Ribéry corner from the left found Miroslav Klose, who rose to head superbly into the net. The goal didn’t knock Wuppertal from their game plan and they managed to fight their way back into the game with an equaliser on 26 minutes.
Striker Tobias Damm’s shot flew into the net, with a desperate attempt from Lucio unable to prevent the goal. However, the Bayern lead was restored little more than a minute later.
With the ‘home’ fans still celebrating, keeper Maly was unable to hold a cross, and Klose was on hand to score his second of the game. But unbelievably Wuppertal themselves responded quickly and grabbed a second equaliser on 29 minutes. Mahir Saglik this time fired a right foot shot past Oliver Kahn to make a real game of it.
Bayern upped the pace at the start of the second half and stamped their authority on the game. Their reward was two goals within the first ten minutes.
Firstly, van Buyten was on hand to head in another Ribéry cross after 50 minutes. Then four minutes later, Luca Toni was in the right place to tuck away Bayern’s fourth after Maly was only able to parry a shot.
Substitute Hamit Altintop grabbed a fifth for Bayern two minutes from the end with a right foot shot to put the icing on a good second half performance and send Bayern into the quarter finals.
Wuppertal: Maly, Stuckmann, Voigt, Wiwerink, Lejan, Bölstler, Jerat (Dogan), Lintjens (Malura), Rietpietsch, Saglik, Damm
Bayern: Kahn, Sagnol, Lucio, van Buyten, Lahm, van Bommel, Zé Roberto (Kroos), Sosa (Altintop), Ribéry, (Schweinsteiger), Toni, Klose
Alemannia Aachen 2 1860 Munich 3
18,000 fans at the Tivoli saw the away side come back from 2-0 down to win 2-3 and proceed to the quarter-finals.
Todor Kolev put the hosts in front after 10 minutes after a long ball was flicked on and played to him on the edge of the Munich area. Ten minutes before the interval and the lead with doubled with Ebbers this time the scorer.
Kolev was the provider this time as he beat Hoffmann before laying the ball off to Ebbers to score.
The second half however saw a comeback along the lines of Liverpool in Istanbul. Three goals from the visitors in the final seven minutes turned the game on its head.
Danny Schwarz grabbed one back for 1860 on 83 minutes when he profited from the ball hitting the Aachen wall following a free kick. Two minutes later and they were on level terms when Kukukovic fired in from close range after a Bierofka cross.
The comeback of all comebacks was completed on 88 minutes when midfielder Fabian Johnson walked through the Aachen defence and left keeper Straub with no chance.
1899 Hoffenheim 2 Hansa Rostock 1
Bundesliga strugglers Hansa Rostock became the latest top flight club to exit the Cup with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of 1899 Hoffenheim.
Per Nilsson opened the scoring in the 12th minute heading in a free kick from Salihovic. Rostock found it very difficult to get themselves into the game and deservedly went in behind at half time.
Seven minutes after the restart however and they did grab and equaliser through Enrico Kern. Following a corner, Stein saw his header come back off the post, but Kern was on hand to fire home.
The second descended into rather a poor affair before Junior Orestes put through his own net to restore Hoffenheim’s lead after 71 minutes.

Borussia Dortmund 2 - 1 Werder Bremen
19' [1 - 0] G. Federico
80' [2 - 0] D. Klimowicz
82' [2 - 1] Diego (pen.)
Quote:
Borussia Dortmund 2 Werder Bremen 1
Thomas Doll's Borussia Dortmund beat title challengers Werder Bremen at the Signal-Iduna Park in front of 68,000 fans. BVB went 2-0 up before substitute Diego scored one penalty and missed another to hand victory to Dortmund.
Geovani Federico gave the home side the lead after 19 minutes after Mladen Petric played the ball into the path of the forward. Werder didn't make the most of their chances in the first half as the hosts went in ahead.
The second half looked finely balanced until ten minutes from time when Diego Klimowicz rounded Tim Wiese after a through pass from Kehl and slotted cooly home. Two minutes later an a foul on Rosenberg led to a penalty, which Diego dispatched to give Werder hope.
That hope was raised two minutes later when the referee awarded a second spot kick to Werder, but on this occasion Ziegler came out on top as he guessed correctly and pushed the ball away.
In the end, the home side deserved their win and their place in the quarter final.

DFB Pokal Round-Up: Schalke Out, Hamburg And Stuttgart Through
Hamburg cruised through to the quarter finals with a 3-0 win over Rot-Weiss Essen, while Stuttgart also progressed against a valiant Werder Bremen II.
Bundesliga Bielefeld were knocked out by an extra-time goal from Carl-Zeiss Jena. In the all-Bundesliga clash, Wolfsburg beat Schalke on penalties to go through.
Rot-Weiss Essen 0 Hamburg 3
Hamburg had few problems in disposing of Essen in this third round tie. Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring after just 6 minutes and the Hanseaten always had the game under control.
Second half goals from Piotr Trochowski and Ivica Olic made the scoreline look more comfortable for Huub Stevens’ side.
Carl-Zeiss Jena 2 Bielefeld 1 (aet)
Jena produced the result of the night by knocking out Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld. The top flight club took the lead shortly before half time through Artur Wichniarek.
However, the visitors conceded a late goal from Petersen to force extra-time and it was the home side that hit the all-important winner through a Simak penalty to see Bielefeld crash out to a lower league side.
Werder Bremen II 2 Stuttgart 3
Stuttgart had a much tougher time of it against Carl-Zeiss Jena. The Swabians found it difficult to get into the game against Werder’s amateurs but did take the lead with their first real effort on 29 minutes by Mario Gomez.
The German international then added two more before half-time to complete his hat-trick inside 16 minutes. Two second half goals from Heider and Peitz proved insufficient in the end as Thomas Wolter’s team were eased out by last year’s beaten finalists.
Wolfsburg 5 Schalke 3 (pens)
The most exciting match took place in Wolfsburg, where the home side beat Mirko Slomka’s side on penalties.
Peter Lövenkrands gave the Königsblauen the lead on 27 minutes rather against the run of play, only for the hosts pressure to pay off when Karimov headed in a late Marcelinho corner in stoppage time to force another 30 minutes.
With no further goals in normal or extra-time, the tie went to penalties with the home side triumphing. Karimov was again the hero scoring the decisive spot kick to seal a good win for Felix Magath.

Bayern Get Munich Derby In Cup
The draw for the quarter finals of the DFB Pokal has paired Munich rivals Bayern and 1860 against each other in a mouth watering tie. Last year’s beaten finalists, Stuttgart face Carl-Zeiss Jena.
The draw was made by women’s world champion Simone Laudehr and she pulled out the two Munich clubs together to set up a potentially cracking quarter final.
Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg have been drawn against Hamburg, while Borussia Dortmund will take on Hoffenheim.
It will be the 204th duel between the two deadly Munich rivals, with the two sides meeting last week in a friendly which ended 1-1. Bayern haven’t beaten 1860 in the last four games.
“Of course it’s a dream draw” admitted Bayern trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld.
“It’s what the fans of Munich have been waiting years for. We are really looking forward to this local derby.”
The reaction from the second division side was rather more reserved.
“Bayern are of course the toughest opponents left in the competition so we can’t really talk about it being a dream draw” said 1860 trainer Marco Kurz.
“A ‘home’ game would also have suited us better.”
The quarter finals will take place on 26th-27th February. The semi-finals are scheduled for 18th-19th March, and because of the Euro 2008 Championship finals, the Cup Final itself in Berlin’s Olympiastadion is booked in for 19th April.
Full draw:
Borussia Dortmund – 1899 Hoffenheim
Bayern Munich – 1860 Munich
VfB Stuttgart – Carl Zeiss Jena
VfL Wolfsburg - Hamburg

German Cup Quarter Final Preview
The German Cup reaches the quarter final stage this week with three Bundesliga sides coming up against second division opposition, while Wolfsburg host Hamburg.
Tuesday 26th February
Borussia Dortmund v 1899 Hoffenheim
Stuttgart v Carl Zeiss Jena
Wednesday 27th February
Wolfsburg v Hamburg
Bayern Munich v 1860 Munich
-----
Borussia Dortmund – 1899 Hoffenheim
Thomas Doll’s Dortmund go looking for their first Cup triumph since 1989 but second division Hoffenheim stand in their way of a semi-final appearance.
BVB had a comfortable 4-1 away win over Magdeburg in the first round and then came from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round. In the round of 16 they overcame Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen 2-1 to set up this quarter-final clash.
Hoffenheim are just outside the promotion places in the second division and travel to Dortmund on the back of a 2-0 home win over promotion rivals Freiburg.
The second division side needed extra time in the first round to beat Augsburg and then beat Greuther Furth in the second round. They then overcame Bundesliga Hansa Rostock in the last round, but face their biggest test on Tuesday against Dortmund.
Stuttgart – Carl Zeiss Jena
Last year’s beaten finalists are looking to go one better this year and lift the German Cup for the fourth time in their history.
The Swabians made heavy work of beating SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round, needing an injury time penalty from Roberto Hilbert to win. They needed extra-time in the next round against Paderborn with a goal from Mario Gomez two minutes from the end saving them from a penalty shoot-out.
Armin Veh’s side then played Werder Bremen II winning 3-2 although the win was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
The East German side’s Cup form stands in stark contrast to their league form. Henning Bürger’s side currently lie in the bottom four and will face a play-off at the end of the season if things don’t improve. They did however take a point from promotion chasing Mainz at the weekend.
Jena overcame FC Gera 03 in the first round, and then knocked out Cup holders Nürnberg on penalties in the next round. The round of 16 saw them up against another struggling Bundesliga club in Bielefeld. They needed extra time, but they prevailed 2-1 thanks to late penalty from Jan Simak.
Wolfsburg – Hamburg
The only all-Bundesliga clash of the quarter finals sees Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg entertaining Hamburg. The league match between the two in September ended 2-2 so there is not much between the two sides.
The ‘Wolves’ beat Würzburg with ease in the first round before a narrow 1-0 win away at high flying Karlsruhe in round two. Last time out they beat Schalke on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 following Karimov’s injury time equaliser.
Title contenders HSV thrashed Holstein Kiel 5-0 in round one before a 3-1 win over Freiburg in round to. In the round of 16 they defeated Rot-Weiss Essen 3-0 away from home.
Wolfsburg have been beaten finalists once, whereas Hamburg have won the Cup three times, the last being in 1987.
Bayern Munich – 1860 Munich
The most attractive tie of the rounds pits traditional Munich rivals Bayern with 1860. The Munich derby is a mouth-watering tie under normal circumstances, but when second division plays first with a place in the semi-final of the cup the prize, it is all the more interesting.
Bayern have lifted the trophy a record 13 times whereas their city rivals only have two wins to their name in 1942 and 1964.
Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side have been tested throughout this season’s competition as they aim for a league and cup double. They needed a penalty shoot out and some goalkeeping heroics from Oliver Kahn to get through their first round tie against Wacker Burghausen.
The second round paired them with traditional rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach but they on 3-1 to set up a last 16 tie with Wuppertal, which they won 5-2, although it was 2-2 at half time.
1860 have beaten SC Verl, FSV Mainz and Alemannia Aachen on the way to their quarter final clash with Bayern.

DFB semi-finals: Bayern play at home
Steffi Jones, president of the organistional committee for the Womens World Cup 2011, and Andreas Köpke, goalie coach of the German international team, presided over the drawing today for the two DFB Cup semi-final matches.
The outcome: a Bundesliga dual between FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg, and FC Carl Zeiss Jena from the 2. Bundesliga playing on the road against Borussia Dortmund. The two matches will be played on March 18th and 19th respectively and will be broadcast live.
Magath happy to be back
One-time Munich coach Felix Magath is happy to be back: "Of course this is a fortunate turn of events, even if I would've preferred to play at home against Bayern. But I'm happy to be back. We've proven what can be done in the Cup."
Magath won the Cup twice with FC Bayern, who parted ways with the coach in January 2007.
