Schalke thump nine past Trier
German second division club Cologne are showing no signs of reliving any former glories under coach Christoph Daum as they crashed out of the German Cup on Sunday.
Seven days before the start of the Bundesliga season, Cologne, who are aiming to return to the top flight next season, suffered an embarrassing 4-2 defeat to Werder Bremen's reserves in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
Despite leading 2-0, Daum's side were unable to kill the game off and were beaten by two extra-time goals.
There were no problems for the Bundesliga representatives on Sunday, however, with Schalke impressing with a 9-0 win at Trier. Gerald Asamoah scored a hat-trick for the Royal Blues against the third division side.
Cup holders Nurnberg were equally impressive with a 6-0 win at Viktoria Hamburg with new signing Angelos Charisteas twice on target and Robert Vittek netting a hat-trick.
Hamburg put five past Kiel without reply and Frankfurt steered past a tricky tie against Union Berlin 4-1; Duisburg beat Babelsberg 4-0, Wolfsburg passed into the second round with the same scoreline at Wurzburg and Karlsruhe beat Neustrelitz 2-1 after extra time.
Bielefeld's 2-0 win at Seligenporten means Bayer Leverkusen and Energie Cottbus are the only two Bundesliga sides to fall at the first hurdle, awaiting the outcome of Bayern Munich's game at Burghausen on Monday evening.

Bayern relief after shootout
Regional League South side Wacker Burghausen made record winners FC Bayern München go all the way in their DFB Cup 1st round match.
Bayern needed the lottery of a penalty shootout to win 5-4 at Wacker, after the match had been tied at 1-1 with 120 minutes gone.
FCB narrowly avoided their first 1st round exit after 13 years. Back then they had lost 1-0 against TSV Vestenbergsgreuth.
Klose equaliser
Thomas Neubert had scored with a header to put the underdogs 1-0 up just past the hour mark in front of 11,582 in the sold-out Wacker-Sportpark.
Miroslav Klose's equaliser eleven minutes from time brought extra-time, but 30 minutes added on failed to decide the winner.
Two Kahn saves
During the penalty shootout Burghausen even had a "match-point", but Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn kept out Palionis' shot.
Christian Lell's goal and another Kahn save against Mayer sent Bayern through to the second round.
