Default Neuer out for months

Quote:
Schalke have paid dear for their first win of the season against SpVgg Erkenschwick (6:0).

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffered a broken metatarsal and will be out for a long time.

Neuer picked up the injury after 72 minutes. Team doctor Bernd Brexendorf detected afterwards that the fifth metatarsal bone of the goalkeeper's right foot was broken.

Back in September?

"Manuel's injury is a real blow for us", commented head coach Fred Rutten after a game that also saw Peter Lövenkrands substituted with an ankle injury.

Neuer will undergo surgery today. "If everything goes well he could be back at the beginning of September", Brexendorf calculated.

A huge blow for Schalke! I'm afraid his absence is going to be noticed a lot.

There's good news on Manuel Neuer's recovery from a broken footbone. The keeper is set to resume light training at the end of next week. "But there's no question of him taking part in squad training yet", coach Fred Rutten added.

Neuer On His Rare Assist

Quote:
Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer admitted that he just "tried to hit the ball as hard as possible" after he set up his side's dramatic last minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg on Sunday.

With Schalke 2-1 down and just seconds left on the clock, Neuer joined the rest of the team in the opposing box for the corner kick, and ultimately it was he who set up the ball for Kuranyi to stab over the line in what was virtually the last kick of the game.

"I don't usually have to go forward because we have enough players who are equally tall as me, but when a goalkeeper pops up in the penalty area, then there is always a bit of confusion," Neuer said.

"I just tried to hit the ball as low as possible towards the goal and it would probably have missed by a yard.

"It's not like you really think in a moment like that - you just try and do something.

"And Kevin finished it off for me."
