Klaus Allofs has denied media speculation that suggests Werder Bremen could be ready to sell unsettled striker Ivan Klasnic during the winter transfer window.

The Croatian international has lost his starting place alongside Miroslav Klose to youngster Aaron Hunt and has been forced to spend large parts of the season on the bench.

His demotion to the periphery of first team football created rumours that he will leave the Weser-Stadion even before his contract expires next summer.

Reports emerging from Croatia suggest Premiership outfit Manchester City could be interested in luring the tall forward to England, while German sources continue to link Klasnic with struggling Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.

"We have a strong selection of strikers and don’t even think about parting company with Klasnic during the winter," stressed Bremen’s director of sport Allofs.

Klasnic, who joined Werder in 2001 from St Pauli, has so far refused to comment on his plans, but as Bremen appear to be moving closer to signing Germany international Jan Schlaudraff from Aachen, it would appear he could soon be deemed surplus to requirements.

Klasnic started the season, but when Klose got injured, Hunt took his place and had some good performances, then Klose returned and Hunt kept his place.

Stuart Pearce has confirmed his admiration for Werder Bremen forward Ivan Klasnic.

Klasnic has slipped down the pecking order at the Weserstadion and reports suggest he could depart the club in the January transfer window.

This has been denied by Werder's sporting director Klaus Allofs, but there are a number of clubs keeping tabs on the Croatian's situation in Germany.

Manchester City have been linked with the forward for some time and Pearce has admitted he would like to bring the 26-year-old to Eastlands.

"He is a quality front-man with a good goals record and at 26 is at the right age," Pearce told the Sunday Mirror.

As well as having his sights set on swelling his ranks, Pearce is also striving to keep the core of his current crop together.

Young defender Micah Richards is rumoured to be a target for Chelsea, but he has been urged to remain loyal to City by captain Richard Dunne.

"In 10 years' time he can go and sign for a Chelsea if he still wants to do that but now he's got a good chance of being part of a side which he can help progress," said Dunne.

"Micah is as big to us as Wayne Rooney is to United. The difference is United can offer Wayne anything he wants.

"For us to get into Europe the board have to do us the favour of keeping our players here. It's a two-way thing."
