Default Stuttgart's Gomez doubtful for Leverkusen

A slight strain to his left hamstring is causing VfB Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez some difficulty.

The 21-year-old's involvement against Leverkusen at the weekend is questionable.

Mario Gomez was forced to pull out of VfB's DFB Cup quarter-final tie at half time yesterday evening.

Thigh strain

A thigh strain forced the Bundesliga's current top scorer to pull out against Hertha after just 45 minutes.

An MRI scan on Thursday showed a slight strain to the hamstring meaning the striker's involvement against Leverkusen on Saturday is in question.

Default Juve After Stuttgart's Mario Gomez

The Bianconeri are keen to bring the Stuttgart striker to Turin upon their return to Serie A, along with other targeted Bundesliga imports.

The Bundesliga is probably the league the Juventus management are looking at most closely, as it always offers plenty of players available on a free transfer.

However, Juve are also chasing a young promising striker whose contract ends in 2011 - Mario Gomez, 20, who plays for Stuttgart.

The competition for the player is pretty stiff, with Arsenal and Liverpool also tracking him. Stuttgart are expected to be demand at least 20 million Euros for him.

Other German targets of the Turin giants include the likes of Werder Bremen players Diego, Miroslav Klose and Torsten Frings - with the third being the most keenly followed at the moment.

The midfielder's contract negotiations seem to have stalled, partly due to reluctance on the part of the player.

He is said to be excited at the prospect of joining the Bianconeri, especially after Roberto Bettega spoke to him about the offer in more detail.
Frings is thinking about it, and the Bianconeri are certain he is the right player. That's why, for now, they have decided to put other possible German negotiations on hold.

Default Bundesliga Bomber Prefers Barça Above All

Catalan daily ‘Sport’ has reported that Stuttgart’s Mario Gómez is keen to make a move from the Bundesliga to Spain’s La Liga, despite various Italian teams casting a favourable eye over the marksman.

21-year-old Mario Gómez is the son of Spanish emigrants who settled in Germany, stands 1.89m tall in his socks and weighs 79 kilos.

The young gun has managed to score his way to the top of the pile in Germany, outstripping established goalgetters such as Makaay, Kuranyi and Klose (all have 11) with a table-topping 14 goals so far this season.

Last month, February the 7th to be exact, he made his absolute debut with the ‘Mannschaft’ and, sure enough, Mario Gómez was one of the scorers as Germany beat Switzerland 3-1 (see video summary below - number 32 Gómez scored the second).

Under contract with Stuttgart until 2011, and with a 25 million Euro buyout clause, Gómez is happy to stay in Germany – unless the Catalan giants knock on his door and make a good offer or are prepared to wait for Gómez.

"Barcelona is my favourite club outside of Germany and it’d be great to play there, but first Barça will have to either wait until I end my current contract or negotiate with Stuttgart", explained Gómez.

Stuttgart’s sporting director has already warned that they won’t be letting their rising star go easily. “There are teams from England, Italy and Spain who are interested in signing him, but we won’t just let the player go without a fight.”

Default Double trouble

VfB striker Mario Gomez would appear to be the brunt of all bad luck at the moment with his knee injury against VfL Wolfsburg now followed by a broken metacarpus.

As Dr. Raymond Best treated Mario Gomez on the pitch during the VfL Wolfsburg tie after a challenge with Jonathan Santana, the striker knew all too well that the injury was going to put him out for some time. In anger Gomez punched the medical box which resulted in him breaking a metacarpus. The extent of the injury to his hand was first diagnosed on Wednesday - a double blow for the youngster who commented: "I said straight away to our doc on Saturday that the ligaments were torn which has since been confirmed. My anger at the situation caused me to lash out at the medical box which has now resulted in this."

Default Progression for Gomez

VfB striker Mario Gomez has been working away on his comeback in Donaustauf for two weeks now. The clubs top scorer spoke to VfB Stuttgart 1893 e.V. about his daily routine, progression and hopes for a quick return.

Hi Mario, you've been in rehab in Donaustauf for two weeks now, how are you?
Mario Gomez: "Thank you, fine. Slowly but surely it's coming along. I have a programme to follow everyday and I'm in good hands here. Klaus Eder, our national team physio has plenty of experience in rehabilitation training. I'm hoping the good work will lead to a quick return."

Any ideas when the VfB fans will see you on the pitch again?
Mario Gomez: "No, not at the moment. So far everything has gone according to plan but it's better to be careful with prognosis. I can promise though that I'm doing all in my power to get back as soon as possible."

All your striker colleagues in the team scored at the weekend, how do you feel about that?
Mario Gomez: "That's super. I was especially happy for Marco Streller, who has had to deal with a lot of criticism, and Benny Lauth on scoring his first goal for VfB. We all know that Cacau is good for a goal."

Aside from your knee you also have a hand injury. How is that?
Mario Gomez: "My hand is not so bad, I'm in no pain. I still have the cast on but that's coming off soon and all is okay."

What is your daily routine in the rehab centre. How does the schedule look?
Mario Gomez: "I start after breakfast. Mornings is treatment, then rehabilitation training and then my therapy with Klaus Eder. Lifting weights, aquajogging, coordinations training and so on. The second shift is then after lunch and I generally finish at about five."

And then exhausted into bed or what's the evening programme like?
Mario Gomez: "I'm not up to much that's true. I maybe watch a DVD or some television. I also read 'Kicker' to keep up with what's going on, I surf the web and telephone with my family. Early to bed and plenty of sleep is good too."

VfB play HSV at the weekend, will you be in the stadium?
Mario Gomez: "No, unfortunately not. It's just to far away. I'll watch the game on television and keep my fingers crossed. I think we'll win 1:0 and I even think I know who'll score."

Who?
Mario Gomez: "Benny Lauth, he'll be really fired up on his return to Hamburg."

Mario Gomez, the Stuttgart striker, has revealed his hopes of returning to action before the end of the season.

The 21-year-old had been sensational this season before he sustained a torn knee ligament injury during his side's 0-0 draw with VfL Wolsburg on March 10. To make matters worse, the 21-year-old lashed out in frustration at the doctor's medical box while he lay on the ground, and broke his hand in the process.

But Gomez is not far away from making a comeback, and he told Bild: "In two, at most three weeks, I will play again. This week, I will get in the gym, and then I hope to train with the rest of the squad."

So far, team doctors have been reluctant to fix a date for the Germany international's return, but team manager Horst Heldt confirmed: "We assume that he'll be fit again to play again this season."

Before the injury, Gomez had earned a call-up to the German national side after shooting his way to the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts - he is currently third in the list, with 13 goals to his name. On his debut for Joachim Loew's side, he netted against Switzerland to cap a fantastic week in which he had bagged three goals in two domestic games.
