Hamburg to announce new coach tomorrow!
German side Hamburger SV have begun their search for the successor to current boss Huub Stevens - and are using scouts to find the new man!
As revealed several months ago, Hamburger SV coach Huub Stevens will step down from his position at the end of the season to become the new boss of PSV Eindhoven.
The Dutchman has been a tremendous success for the Hanseaten since joining in February last year, but his wife's long-term illness has prompted him to return back to the Netherlands.
Lengthy Process
Unlike rivals Bayern Munich, who appointed Jürgen Klinsmann their new manager a mere four days after beginning their search, Hamburg are opting for the slow and thorough approach.
So much so that they've got their team of specialists to go on a scouting mission to find Stevens' successor.
Just like club's monitor potential transfers, HSV scouts will scour the continent looking for a suitable man to take the hotseat at the HSH Nordbank Arena.
Top Coach Is Critically Important
"The manager is the most important position in the whole club," said sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer. "So it makes sense to gather as much information as possible."
Hamburg have made tremendous progress under Stevens this year and a talented successor vital for them to continue on their upwards trend as they aim for regular Champions League football and trophies.
Key questions for the HSV chiefs include, according to Bild, whether potential candidates can keep their players in check, how tactically sound they are and how they run their training sessions. Discipline and good relations to both fans and media are also a must.
Scouts are observing managers at work during games and writing lengthy reports on what they see before reporting back to Hamburg. It is not yet known who - or even in which countries - the potential successors are.

Van Basten In Hamburg Link
Dutch national team trainer Marco van Basten is the first name to be linked with the Hamburg trainer’s job, which will become available when Huub Stevens leaves at the end of the season.
With 54 year old Stevens announcing his intention to leave the club in the summer, the hunt is underway for his successor.
Reports in ‘Bild am Sonntag’ claim that Stevens and Sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer travelled to Holland yesterday to open talks with a potential successor and that individual was van Basten.
The former Milan and Holland striker will be leaving his post as Dutch trainer after the European Championship finals and will no doubt be looking for a new challenge.
“After four years, it will be time for a new environment” van Basten told Bild.
“Hamburg is an interesting club, a European club with potential and perspective. Good people work there. But I can’t talk about things that lie in the future” he added.
Van Basten’s name was being mentioned for the Bayern Munich job, before Jürgen Klinsmann got the nod. Like Klinsmann, van Basten has no experience of club management.
Whoever gets the job will be expected to carry on the good work of Huub Stevens, who has rescued the club from relegation and taken them into the Uefa Cup and third place in the Bundesliga.

well looking at the current speculation it's 5 candidates
Van Basten as mentioned...
Rijkaard as appearantly he STRONGLY suggested to Ofue to join HSV at any cost
van Maarwijk and Rotten. both in the dutch league. Where van maarwijk is doubtfull in my eyes. he has better opportunities at feynord
and nurembergs hans mayer. but that one said nuremberg will be his last coaching station

It’s Either Klopp Or A Dutchman For HSV
With Huub Stevens set to leave the club at the end of the season, Hamburg face an important dilemma: should they choose another Dutch coach or go for Jürgen Klopp of Mainz?
According to local daily Hamburger Morgenpost, there is a difference of opinion between Bernd Hoffmann, board chairman and managing director, and Didi Beiersdorfer, vice-chairman and sporting director.
Beiersdorfer, a former Hamburg player, thinks that the Dutch model has worked out fine and has already short-listed six compatriots of Stevens, who will return to his homeland to take over at former club PSV Eindhoven.
While the names of Martin Jol, Co Adriaanse, Louis van Gaal, Marco van Basten and Bert van Marwijk appear on the list, Beiersdorfer’s chosen one is reportedly Fred Rutten, who had been heavily linked with the Eredivisie champions himself when Ronald Koeman left for Valencia at the end of October.
At the time Rutten sensationally turned down PSV Eindhoven’s seductive offer and chose to stay at Twente, with whom he is tied up until mid-2009, acting both as coach and technical director. However, his contract includes a clause allowing him to leave and Hamburg could be a tempting destination.
There is still of course the small matter of bending Hoffmann’s objections, as he’s strongly in favour of landing Klopp, whose contract with Mainz expires at the end of the season. “I haven’t made up my mind yet. There’s still enough time. I could stay here, join another club or even find myself with nothing to do for the first time. That is also a possibility,” 40-year-old Klopp told the Hamburger Morgenpost.
He added that his decision would heavily rely on the outcome of his side’s effort to win their return to the Bundesliga. The All-Reds went down last season and currently lie second, but only a single point above fourth-placed Freiburg. The top-three will win promotion at the end of the campaign.
Should HSV finally opt for a new Dutch coach, it will arguably sound like music to the ears of the four Dutch players already on their books, even though Rafael van der Vaart may not be there for long.

Hamburg To Reveal New Trainer By March
HSV Hamburg have said that they hope to be in a position to reveal the name of Huub Stevens’ successor by March.
Chairman Bernd Hoffmann made the announcement after a board meeting on Sunday that: “We hope to have a decision within the next six to eight weeks.”
The two names on the shortlist so far are Fred Rutten from Twente Enschede and Jürgen Klopp from Mainz 05.
“I am sure that we will make the right decision, even if it’s not a surprise coup” Hoffmann said, with reference to the shock appointment of Jürgen Klinsmann by Bayern Munich.
Huub Stevens will be leaving the club at the end of the season for family reasons and is to take up the trainer post at PSV Eindhoven. Hoffmann described the Dutchman as a “stroke of luck for HSV”, and expressed the hope that the club could win a trophy under him before he leaves.
“We are still in three competitions and want to achieve something in the next six months” he added.
HSV are certainly in fine health financially with a record income of €139.7 million for the season 2006/07 (up 34% on the previous year). The profit from that was €6 million.

Gross Confirms Hamburg Talks
FC Basel trainer Christian Gross has confirmed that he has held talks with Hamburg over the upcoming vacancy as trainer.
The “purely informal” discussions took place between the Swiss trainer and the Bundesliga side as HSV step up the search for someone to replace Huub Stevens, who is leaving at the end of the season.
53 year old Gross confirmed however that he intended to see out his current contract with FC Basel, which runs to 2009.
Gross has previously attracted interest from both Schalke and Wolfsburg over a potential move to the Bundesliga. The ex-Bochum player spent a season in England as manager of Tottenham back in 1997-98 and has led Basel to three league titles.
Other potential candidates to succeed Stevens are Fred Rutten (Twente Enschede), Jürgen Klopp (Mainz) and Bruno Labbadia (Greuther Fürth).
Huub Stevens has already confirmed he is to take over at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

Rutten Favourite For Hamburg Job?
FC Twente boss Fred Rutten is the new favourite to land the job as manager of Hamburg
Hamburger SV coach Huub Stevens announced last year that he would quit the Hanseaten at the end of the season to return back to the Netherlands for family reasons.
The boss already has a job as head coach of PSV Eindhoven lined up upon his arrival, but it now appears as if HSV are eyeing another Dutchman as his replacement.
A report in Bild suggests that Hamburg's board have taken the decision to pursue interest in Fred Rutten, currently in the Eredivisie with FC Twente.
Dietmar Beiersdorfer, the Rothosen's sporting chief, has however refused to rule the move in or out. "The board haven't made a decision," he told the newspaper. "Our search for a manager isn't over yet. At the moment there's a lot of speculation."
Shortlisted Candidates
The one sure thing is that Rutten has made a shortlist, but the Dutchman is under contract to Twente until 2009. Bild are reporting that a fee of €500,000 would be required to release Rutten from his current deal and secure passage to the HSH Nordbank Arena.
Other candidates for the job are reported to be Mainz 05's Jürgen Klopp, who has also been linked with Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, who will lose Giovanni Trapattoni in the summer. Christian Gross is also thought to have been approached by Hamburg. It is thought an announcement will be made next month.

Hecking Not In Running For Hamburg Job
With Hamburg in the hunt for a new trainer to succeed Huub Stevens at the end of the season, one name definitely not in the frame is that of Hannover trainer Dieter Hecking.
Martin Kind, chairman of Hannover 96, has confirmed that HSV have made an enquiry for Hecking, but that the club have turned it down point blank.
“It has been spoken about, but we are in no way interested in starting a dialogue. The issue is a non-starter” he confirmed in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.
Hecking, who is under contract with the Niedersachsen club until 2010, joined the club in 206 from Alemannia Aachen and has shown no signs that he wants to leave the club.
“If Hamburg have considered me, then that shows that we are doing good things here” he said.
“But for me it’s not an issue” he added.
The favourite for the post remains FC Twente Enschede coach Fred Rutten.
Huub Stevens will be returning to Holland due to family reasons and will take over at PSV Eindhoven.

Losing Stevens will be such a massive blow for HSV, as bad as losing VdV in my opinion.
Regardless of who they hire, HSV will not be a strong next season, even if VdV stays.

Bilic Enters Frame For Hamburg Job
With Hamburg still in the hunt for a trainer to succeed Huub Stevens at the end of the season, and the search entering its final phase, a new name has entered the picture- Croatian national coach Slaven Bilic.
HSV have still not come to an agreement with favourite candidate Fred Rutten of Twente Enschede, which has led to the name of Slaven Bilic entering the frame to succeed the PSV-bound Huub Stevens in the summer.
Reports in ‘Kicker’ claim that HSV leadership team Bernd Hoffmann, Dietmar Beiersdorfer and Katja Kraus travelled to Zagreb on Monday on business concerning the soon to be vacant HSV trainer’s job.
39 year old Bilic is said to be the target after he led Croatia to qualification for the Euro 2008 finals, where they have been drawn in Germany’s group.
Bilic has Bundesliga experience after making 66 appearances for Karlsruhe between 1993 and 1995. His playing career took him to both Everton and West Ham after he left Germany.
Bilic started out as trainer of Hajduk Split before taking on the role of Croatian U-21 manager. He took over the full international side in July 2006.
He has enjoyed good success with the Croatian national side finishing top of Group E pipping England to qualification for the European Championships. He is seen as a smart tactician and has experience of working with top players.

Bilic Offered Hamburg Post
Croatian national team manager Slaven Bilic has revealed that he has been offered the job as Hamburg trainer to succeed Hub Stevens, who is leaving in the summer.
Following his success in leading Croatia to the European Championships, Bilic has been linked with a number of club sides including some from the Premier League.
His tenure with the Croats comes to an end after the finals tournament and it has become apparent that Hamburg have upped their efforts to get Bilic to the HSH Nordbank Arena to replace Stevens.
“They made it clear that they want me to take over the team from this summer” Bilic told Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List.
"However, we haven't talked about any concrete details yet."
The Croatian Football Association (HNS) however remain hopeful of signing Bilic to a new deal, but have admitted they may not be able to match the financial power that Europe's leading clubs possess.
“I wouldn't like to use media as a means of communication with my employer and anyhow, there is nothing new yet” Bilic added.
"It is true that the Hamburg offer is an honour for me."
