Default Sevillas Antonio Puerta in intensive care

Spain international Antonio Puerta had a suspected heart attack in Sevilla's 4-1 Primera Liga win against Getafe.

The 22-year-old suffered problems midway through the first-half on the opening day of the season in Spain.

Medics prevented Puerta from swallowing his tongue, but he collapsed again after going off and was given cardiac resuscitation before going to hospital.

His condition was described as "very serious" and club president Jose Maria del Nido claimed it was a heart attack.

Team-mate Ivica Dragutinovic was first to Puerta's aid and midfielder Renato said: "We were very frightened, but the doctors knew what they were doing.

"It was difficult to continue playing. This victory is dedicated to Puerta."

Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was in no mood to talk about his side's victory after the match.

"I don't have the mind to speak now. The reason I am here is because we are all professionals, but I have no desire to talk of the game or anything," Ramos said.

"I would like to see the player. The game does not have any importance compared with the health of a player."

Uefa Cup holders Sevilla are set to contest the Super Cup against AC Milan in Monaco on Friday 31 August.
===========================

Cant believe he had a suspected heart attack, hopefully he will be alrite as things like this put football in perspective

according to my source, he collapsed durin the match, and was awaken after a short time, and when the soctors took him out of the pitch he had a heart attack and was taken to hospital. and he is still fighting for his life.

I was watching the match when he suddenlt bent down and slept on the field, other players starting putting their fingers in head mouth and carrying his head, then the doctors came and stood on the cameras way so i couldn't see more, but after a minute he was standing again and the doctors kept pouring water on him and he was taken away.
frightening.

shit... i hope he survives.

but even if he does what's going to happen to his career? he's going to need a lot of support from friends and family and the club... he's a talented player as well.

Apparently for a professional footballer to have a proper heart attack it is extremely unlikely they'll ever get near the same level again. While I was watching the second half they said that Real Madrid enquired about him last week to fill their left hand side. For now I really hope he gets through it alive.

Same thing happened to benfica's Miki feher but tragically he died. Some players have undiagnosed heart conditions and it's sad to see this happen.

The latest report on Puerta is not good, and there is some thought that Del Nido spun the news last night in an overly-positive fashion.

He's still in critical condition, still on the respirator, still heavily sedated, and the latest bulletin seems to say that some brain damage is likely. The current hypothesis is that he suffered multiple heart attacks.
