LFP declare Roux too old

Veteran French coach Guy Roux has had his contract with Lens revoked because he is too old.

The 68-year-old had been set to make a comeback to coaching after retiring as Auxerre coach after 43 years in charge.

But the Professional Football League [LFP] have declared his two-year contract with Lens as invalid because Roux is three years over the 65 year age limit.

Commission president Andre Soulier voted 3-2 in favour of rejecting the contract which was initially handed to Roux three weeks ago.

Soulier also stated that the law was not clear in this area and that the LFP would welcome guidance on the matter from the French National Olympics and Sports Committee [CNOSF].

"It concerned a point of law," Soulier told AFP.

"The charter states that 'no contract will be registered in favour of an instructor who is over the age'.

"But European law forbids discrimination by age in employment. One can imagine that Guy Roux and RC Lens will decide upon an appeal.

"The question remains on the legality or not of this charter. I would welcome an early ruling by the CNOSF," added Soulier.

Asked about the decision by the LFP, Roux said: "Justice would be done before the CNOSF.

"I'd been warned that the legal commission is a body whose bible is the football charter and who work bizarrely outside the law.

"I knew at this stage it would be no. So we'll see what happens."

Lens president Gervais Martel has confirmed the club will be appealing to the CNOSF.

Martel said: "I'm very disappointed, I thought that common sense would prevail.

"Were going to go all the way because we believe this decision is unfair," he added.

The French league are really off base regarding Roux..The man is a pure genius and took Auxerre from a small provence club to First division champions..He will be a good influence on Lens and could lead them to possible Championship run..This team really under achieve this past year and alot was due to the ineffective coaching of Gillet...
