Fiorentina ponder Frey swap Saturday 2 February, 2008

Fiorentina have sensationally admitted that they would consider exchanging Sebastien Frey with Milan striker Alberto Gilardino.

The proposed switch has been reported by various media outlets over the last few months and those reports will gather pace after today’s developments.

After being asked whether the goalkeeper could join the Rossoneri at the end of the season, sporting director Pantaleo Corvino insisted it could happen.

“If the ‘keeper came to us with a transfer request then we would not stand in his way,” the Viola official told Rete 37 this afternoon.

“At that point, a swap deal with Milan that would see Gilardino arrive would be a good option for us.”

Milan have been linked with a Frey approach after another set of problematic and costly goalkeeping performances by Nelson Dida this term.

Gilardino too has been associated with a San Siro exit following the arrival of Alexandre Pato and Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli, who worked with him at Parma, knows him well.

However, Fiorentina’s salary cap would pose a problem for the Italian striker who earns £2.5m – double the amount which top wage earners Frey and Adrian Mutu currently net.

Ufo set for Atletico? Friday 8 February, 2008

Reports from Spain suggest that Fiorentina defender Tomas Ujfalusi will join Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

The Czech international’s contract is set to expire in June and he has refused to negotiate an extension at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

It seems almost inevitable that the 29-year-old will leave after three years with the Gigliati and over 100 appearances.

According to Radio Marca, Ujfalusi has already agreed a deal with Atletico that will see him sign a three-year contract with Los Rojiblancos starting in July.

The agreement is believed to be worth around £1m per season and will allow the talented stopper the chance to make his dream move to La Liga.

The news will come as a blow to Sevilla, who have reportedly been tracking Ujfalusi for months but have never made a concrete approach

Fiorentina move for Melo Friday 14 March, 2008

Fiorentina are set to complete a major swoop for Brazilian midfield star Felipe Melo from Spanish side Almeria.

The 24-year-old is regarded as a huge talent for the future and was also a target for Lazio, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Fiorentina seem to have secured his signature by acting first and are ready to pay around £10m for a man who has played 24 games this season and found the net four times.

“I am very happy with the way that my career is going,” Melo told Spanish newspaper Marca.

“I had other offers but they were inferior to Fiorentina’s. To be chased by such a top-level side makes me so proud.”

Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino [pictured] is reportedly still trying to secure a deal for Serbian youngster Stevan Jovetic.

The 18-year-old forward is looking to leave Partizan in the summer for a big club and the Viola are expected to table a bid of around £7m

Sevilla and Atletico Madrid are ready to do battle for the signature of Fiorentina defender Tomas Ujfalusi.

The Czech international has become a key figure at the back for the Tuscans and has made over 100 appearances since joining from Hamburg in 2004.

However, despite the Viola’s determination to tie Ufo to a long-term deal, the 29-year-old is almost certain to quit the club in the summer.

Rumours suggest that agent Beyram Tutumlu had already agreed a deal with Sevilla, but Atletico gazumped the Rojiblancos with a superior contract offer.

There were reports earlier in the season that Juventus were keen to swoop for the man with 64 international caps, but sources state that he has his heart set on relocating to La Liga

Viola assess Frey alternatives Sunday 23 March, 2008

Fiorentina are looking for a potential new goalkeeper should Sebastien Frey opt to move on at the end of the season.


Although the Frenchman has insisted that he’s happy with the Viola, rumours of a possible move to Milan continue to circulate.


Fiorentina admitted earlier this season that they wouldn’t stand in Frey’s way should he opt for a fresh challenge and the club are already taking steps to replace him should that need occur.


The Tuscan outfit’s search for a shot-stopper has taken them to Brazil – a nation who already provide Milan, Inter and Roma with custodians.


Gremio youngster Grohe, just 21, is liked and the club are also monitoring the 23-year-old Cruzeiro shot-stopper Flavio. The pair are valued at £5m and £3.5m respectively.


Nevertheless, sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is also understood to be evaluating an offer for Brescia’s Emiliano Viviano.


The Under-21 international is rated by a host of top clubs and Viviano has made it clear that he wouldn’t think twice about a Franchi future.


“Fiorentina? I wouldn’t just walk there to complete the move, I’d do so naked,” he recently noted. “I hope to realise this dream soon as I have been a Viola fan for some time.”

Do Prado's farewell to Florence Friday 11 July, 2008

Fiorentina have rescinded the contract of Brazilian midfielder Guilherme Do Prado by mutual consent.

After spells at Catania and Perugia, the 26-year-old signed for Fiorentina in 2006.

However, after an injury-plagued start to life at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Do Prado was sent on loan to Serie B side Spezia last term.

A season of hard graft with the relegated Ligurians hasn’t done anything to convince the Tuscans that Do Prado should be called back to base.

During a meeting with the Viola directors earlier this afternoon both sides agreed that it would be best for the Brazilian to look for a new club as a free agent.

Do Prado is the seventh man to leave Fiorentina this summer but he makes way for two compatriots in Felipe Melo and Jefferson, who have been brought in.

Arshavin to fill Mutu gap? Thursday 24 July, 2008

The agent of Russian star Andrei Arshavin suggests that Fiorentina see the talented forward as a possible replacement for key striker Adrian Mutu.

The Viola have rejected Roma’s £16m bid for Romanian ace Mutu, but the Giallorossi will keep trying to prise him away.

Mutu seems keen to make a fresh start in the capital and a transfer is still possible, which would leave the Gigliati in desperate need of a replacement ahead of the start of their Champions League campaign.

Arshavin became hot property during Euro 2008 when he helped Russia exceed expectations and he has hinted that he would like to leave current club Zenit St Petersburg.

And now agent Dennis Lachter has hinted that Fiorentina may be tracking the 27-year-old.

“Beyond the names that have been linked with Arshavin in recent days, there is a new Italian club who are in the Champions League and they are in pole position,” he told Firenzeviola.it.

In order to secure Arshavin’s signature, Fiorentina would need to spend at least £10m, but the sale of Mutu would make the funds available.
