Smart move by Fiorentina, the sheer fact that he will be a regular with the Azzurri soon, will make him even more valuable. I hope Inter pay close attention to this kid....I really believe he could be an excellent addition.

Possibly the next Pirlo the way things are developing, Fiorentina is a good place for him to be right now though.

If he gets that good, then we'll see. Still has a lot to learn, not exactly like Pirlo, better on the ball in terms of dribbling and such, but definitely not as good at passing.

Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo has extended his contract at the Stadio Artemio Franchi until 2012.

The talented 22-year-old made his Azzurri debut against South Africa yesterday and is seen as one of the peninsula’s brightest prospects for the future.

It is believed that the new deal is worth around £700,000 per season to the man tipped to be Andrea Pirlo’s successor.

“It was always my intention to renew here and it’s a shame I didn’t sign until 2013,” the Atalanta youth product enthused.

“I feel wanted and at home here and I get smiles and encouragement along the way.”

Montolivo is ready to star for the Viola in their bitter Tuscan derby against Siena this Sunday and the Gigliati travel to Villarreal next Thursday.

There will be few changes to Roberto Donadoni’s squad before the summer’s trip to Austria and Switzerland and Montolivo will surely have to wait until 2010 to represent his nation at a major tournament.

The 23-year-old made his Italy debut in last October’s friendly win over South Africa and has made an impressive contribution to Fiorentina’s superb campaign.

“I’m not thinking about the national side,” Montolivo insisted. “I am just trying to do my best when I go out on the pitch and we will have to see.

“It would be a great pleasure to go all the way in the UEFA Cup, but the Final is still a long way off and we will have to show our strength to get there.”

The Viola lead Milan by four points in their bid for fourth place and Champions League football.

“We are focusing on the remaining games,” the former Atalanta man continued.

“Over the course of the season we have found a consistency in our performances that was lacking at the start.

“Finally we have some rest time to get back our energy before the next string of games. Up until now I have played in practically every game and that’s a positive feeling for me.”
