A four year contract though?

A bit risky for me.

Bayern sign Toni from Fiorentina
Bayern sign Toni from Fiorentina

MUNICH, May 30 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich have agreed a deal to sign Italy striker Luca Toni from Fiorentina for 11 million euros ($14.76 million), the Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Toni, an important part of Italy's victorious World Cup squad in Germany last year, will join on a contract running until 2011, Bayern said.

"The transfer fee is exactly 11 million euros," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club's Web site Toni has played at Fiorentina for the last two seasons, scoring 49 goals.

The tall striker missed the end of the season because of a foot injury that required surgery. That injury has also ruled him out of the Italy squad for June's Euro 2008 qualifiers in the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

Bayern are carrying out a significant rebuilding plan after missing out on a place in the Champions League.

Toni is the fifth confirmed signing for the new season after Hamit Altintop, Jan Schlaudraff, Jose Ernesto Sosa and Marcell Jansen.

The club are also interested in French international Franck Ribery.

Toni scores (financially)! Fantastic deal for him, he must be thrilled.

I would've liked him to stay in Italy, but to be honest I'd rather Bayern gets him than Inter, so this is fine with me.

Next season, I start watching Bayern. I REALLY want to see how he does there.

Bayern Munich’s new £7.5m signing Luca Toni says he made the choice to leave Italy 'out of respect for Fiorentina.'

This evening both the German and Italian club released statements confirming the transfer for £7.5m and a contract until June 30, 2011 was almost complete.

“We have reached a basic agreement. There are only a few details to be decided before the transfer can be completed,” said the Viola’s official website.

He had been heavily linked with Inter and Juventus over the past year, but opted to stay on for another season to help Fiorentina out of their 15-point Calciopoli penalty before moving to the Bundesliga.

“My transfer to another Italian club would have been more damaging for the Della Valle family,” said the World Cup winner.

“I spent two wonderful years in Florence and am very grateful to the fans. I hope this gesture can help the club.”

In two seasons at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Toni has scored 47 goals in 67 appearances, including the 2006 Golden Boot with a record 31 Serie A goals.

We need create a thread for Toni now in the players abroad section. O_K will keep us in the loop! Unfortunately, i don't get to see many Bayern games...as they are rarely shown on tv here. I will miss Toni. I would of liked if he joined Inter so i can see him weekly. But he deserves a good salary. All the best Luca!

Maybe they have the intentions of releasing him if he starts to decline given his age. This way they don't risk losing him for nothing and gives them an extra year to make a move?

Why though? He'll be worth even less in a couple of years time.

Maybe they feel that if Toni starts to decline in his goal production, they can at least sell him for even a couple million, rather then lose him for nothing after four years. If he has a good 2 seasons and the 3rd he starts to decline, they can sell him for a couple million, rather then nothing after the fourth season.

That's just my thoughts...most likely it's completely off base, but that's the approach i would use if i were signing a 30 yr old for 4 years?
