Energy connects.
E.ON Energie unveiled as new FCB partner
Quote:
"Energy connects“ is the leitmotif of the new premium partnership between FC Bayern Munich and E.ON Energie, which came into effect on 1 July 2008. Both FC Bayern and E.ON Energie, one of Europe's largest energy service providers with its headquarters in Munich, are successful businesses and leaders in their commercial sectors.

"It is wonderful to be able to count E.ON Energie as an FC Bayern Munich sponsor," enthused Uli Hoeneß at the announcement of the partnership, "both E.ON Energie and FC Bayern always seek optimal performance and set ambitious targets and objectives. If we combine our energy, we'll certainly be able to achieve a huge amount for our supporters and friends, for the region, and for our many young fans.“

Fan activities planned

The shared base of Munich underlines the regional focus of the partnership. The primary goal is to involve and enthuse the appropriate target groups from all over the Bavarian region. E.ON Energie will support Bayern in many ways, including fan activities and proactive involvement in Bavarian youth football. Before the start of the current season, one lucky U-11 team will benefit from a unique experience, the one-off chance to appear on their team photo with their FC Bayern idols.

The premium partnership between E.ON Energie and FC Bayern will also see the service provider offer energy-related consulting services to the football club, in optimising the energy mix at the Allianz Arena and in the new ServiceCenter at the Säbener Strasse.

Fans v pros

The fans will be the focus when Bayern face Hamburger SV on Bundesliga Matchday 1. Together with Bayern, E.ON Energie has devised a special treat for the supporters at the Allianz Arena, centred on the "E.ON Shooting Energy Tool“, allowing fans to measure their shooting power directly against the professionals. The fans with the hardest shots will appear on the stadium video walls.

^ Borowski's price is related to Bremen, he has been injured for some time, and didn't play regularly. So I think it is right.

Demichelis to 18m would be a rapid change. Give him another season and we'll eventually see that.

Agreed on Schweini, Ribéry and Lahm.

A huge crowd of journalists gathered on the ground of FC Bayern on Friday. About 60 photographers were at the official photo session of the senior squad.

Besides photos for the FCB sponsors such as T-Home, Audi, Coca-Cola and HypoVereinsbank, new team photo and individual portrait photos of each player were taken.

The Bayern squad, including the injured midfield star Franck Ribéry, posed in the Home kit, aswell as in the two new Away and Champions League kits.

The session lasted approximately one hour. The team then went to the first training session of the day.

Some bad news. Tim Borowski and Luca Toni have to sit out for some days from injuries.

They will definately not play against FC Köln, as they haven't even taken the flight. They remained in Munich.

Whether they can play in the next friendly match on Tuesday against Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan, that remains to be seen.

Borowski has picked up a knee injury in training (ah damn, he's so inury prone!).
Toni has picked up a muscle injury.

Kurze Pause für Toni und Borowski

You have to expect a few injuries in Pre-season training, but luckily both are minor injuries -- few days out a piece.

Oh, sure mate. But, Borowski is a different case, he's so injury prone, and he just confirmed it once again. That's my worry.

Fitness and efficiency
Coaches lay foundation for successful term

Quote:
Jürgen Klinsmann has made many changes in his short time at the Bayern helm, including the performance centre, an eight-hour day for the professionals, language courses and a new footballing philosophy. The approach to fitness has changed too. Instead of easing into pre-season with a relaxed kick-about, the club's Euro 2008 stars spent their first day back in Munich exclusively in the fitness area of the new centre.

The players performed a series of tests to set benchmarks for stability and flexibility, with further tests over the following days to measure sprinting, stamina, leaping ability and upper body strength. Every player also reported to Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt for orthopaedic screening. "That's a first this year," reports Bayern fitness coaching chief Oliver Schmidtlein. "We're not diagnosing illness, we're checking for weaknesses.“

Individual training

Any areas for improvement were then analysed by Schmidtlein's team of performance coaches, producing a profile for each player based on the tests and the screening programme, and ultimately resulting in a training schedule tailored to each individual. However, this does not spell the end of team training at the club. "We spend maybe ten minutes before and after sessions with the individuals," Schmidtlein reports. All other workouts take place in groups.

Basic fitness naturally played a major role in the early weeks of pre-season, but Schmidtlein, Thomas Wilhelmi, Marcelo Martins and Darcy Norman have also been working on areas such as stability. The players have for example hopped and balanced on one leg over mini hurdles. "Controlling your weight on one leg is vital in football," Schmidtlein explains.

Effectiveness means speed

Basic strength exercises also feature prominently in the overall fitness schedule, in which the actual weights employed by the players are less important than precise and correct repetition. "We're continually making corrections," explained Schmidtlein, "we want the players' movements to be as effective as possible.“ Efficiency of movement means greater speed on the field of play, especially when changing direction, for example.

One benefit of the new performance centre is providing plenty of space for the exercises, although the fitness area at the club is nothing like a conventional gym or fitness studio. "The equipment you find in normal fitness studios wouldn't be appropriate at a football club," Schmidtlein points out.

Be fit, feel fit

The players' progress during the course of the season will be tested on an ongoing basis. "We're hoping to see the effects within the first half year," Schmidtlein observed, although one element which cannot be quantified is the psychological benefit of the programme. "One aspect to consider is whether a player perceives himself as quick," Schmidtlein explains, "we want the players to think of themselves as big, strong, fast and explosive.“

Superbly conditioned bodies and minds form the foundation of a season in which the club hopes for great success. "Jürgen Klinsmann favours a quick, athletic, active and aggressive style of play. We're trying to lay the groundwork for that," explains Schmidtlein. However, pure fitness training will play a less central role in the later stages of pre-season, as sessions increasingly take place out on the practice ground. As Schmidtlein acknowledges: "Bayern is not about to become a fitness club. Football training remains the most important thing.“

Ribéry making progress
Toni and Borowski yet to recover fitness

Quote:
Big-name stars Luca Toni, Franck Ribéry, Tim Borowski and Hans Jörg Butt were all missing when the Bayern party took off for Tokyo on Tuesday afternoon. While Jürgen Klinsmann and his team were aboard their Lufthansa flight to the Japanese capital, the four injured players were busily working their way back towards full fitness at the Säbener Strasse.

“They’ll perform intense rehab training over the next few days, and they’ll be totally knackered afterwards,” Klinsmann told fcbayern.de shortly before take-off from Munich. Toni and Co will report to the performance unit under Oliver Schmidtlein and Darcy Norman, and physios Fredi Binder and Giovanni Bianchi. The four recuperating players have been assigned individual schedules depending on the severity and nature of their injuries, working out on the exercise bike or completing stabilisation, power and stamina-building routines.

Ribéry still in plaster

Franck Ribéry, still in plaster after surgery to repair ankle ligament damage, is the most restricted in his training options. The Frenchman is likely to undergo a scheduled operation on Friday to remove a surgical screw inserted six weeks ago to stabilise the injured joint. Ribéry himself is hoping to be fit by early or mid-September. By contrast, Butt is up and running again after a muscle strain kept him out of action at the weekend.

Butt, Borowski and Toni’s chances of appearing on 5 August in the Franz Beckenbauer Cup meeting with Inter Milan were “very, very slim,” according to Klinsmann. None of the players is expected back on the training ground until early next week, “one after another” depending on any reactions to the original injuries. The trio must all be rated doubtful for the DFB German Cup tie away to Erfurt on 10 August.

Deja-vu for Toni

Toni will be feeling a strong sense of deja-vu after a similar pattern to pre-season last summer. The lanky Italian tore muscle fibres in his calf and was not fit in time for the Cup first round trip to Wacker Burghausen. Just a few days later, he fired Bayern’s first goal of the new Bundesliga season in a 3-0 opening day victory over Hansa Rostock.

Two for every position
Battle for places underway in earnest

Quote:
Battle for places

The latecomers “may not be at the level where they belong” against Erfurt and in the Bundesliga opener against Hamburg, Klinsmann pointed out, “they need to catch up as quickly as possible and slot into the rhythm, but that won’t happen until after the season starts.“ Furthermore, it could still be “a couple of months“ before the players are fully able to implement Klinsmann’s desired system and philosophy.

The latecomers are also at a disadvantage when it comes to staking claims for a place in the team. “The players who’ve been with us since the start of pre-season do have an advantage,” Klinsmann confirmed, although none is entitled to sit on his laurels just yet. “The squad is packed with quality. We have two players for every position, and every position will be fought over,” Klinsmann reasoned.

Ongoing contest

That would continue to apply to the entire season, the coach commented. “It’ll be a continuous battle. The players will redefine themselves all the time, they’ll have to be looking at themselves the whole time. Football is about the here and now. You only ever focus at what’s coming up tomorrow, next week or next month. Everything that’s happened in the past is meaningless,“ summarised the man who had just turned 44.
