Bayern ran up an 11-5 victory against Hesse fourth division champions SV Darmstadt 98 on Tuesday evening, treating the 19,800 capacity crowd at the Böllenfalltor stadium to a gala evening of summer football. Hanover-bound striker Jan Schlaudraff fired no fewer than seven of Bayern’s goals, with Lukas Podolski, Ze Roberto, Daniel van Buyten and Bastian Schweinsteiger rounding off the scoring. “It’s the result you want in a friendly. It was a minor spectacular for both teams,“ FCB coach Ottmar Hitzfeld commented afterwards.
The gate money and TV receipts from the match will be split between the Hesse side and Uli Hoeneß’ home club SSV Ulm, another long-established club to have fallen on hard times. Ulm were originally slated to stage the match but were forced to decline for organisational reasons. “But this way, we can help both clubs,” Hoeneß commented at half-time.
Action aplenty
The first-half in particular was an action-packed affair, Schlaudraff opening the scoring on six minutes. Rudi Hübner (22) and fourth division top scorer Sebastian Glasner (27), who seized on a sloppy Willy Sagnol back-pass, then put the home side in front, but Schlaudraff levelled just two minutes later.
However, the German champions’ relief was short-lived and the stadium erupted as Alvano Kröh (30) and former Bundesliga player Michael Anicic (36) made it 4-2 to the minnows. “I wasn’t entirely pleased!” FCB coach Hitzfeld admitted afterwards, while general manager Hoeneß looked on impassively. Smiles returned to faces on the Bayern bench before half-time, where Luca Toni and Franck Ribéry, both still carrying knocks, were among the autograph-signing substitutes.
Breno opens account
The reason for the more contented air on the bench was a four-goal salvo from Schlaudraff (38), Podolski (39), Schlaudraff again (39) and Breno (45), the Brazilian youngster’s first goal in a Bayern shirt. Andreas Ottl also drove a shot off the bar (42).
Schweinsteiger, Mark van Bommel, Philipp Lahm and Van Buyten replaced José Sosa, Zé Roberto, Christian Lell and Martin Demichelis for the second half, while Darmstadt, with a Hesse Cup semi-final against district league side SV Weidenhausen to contest on Wednesday evening, made a raft of changes throughout the second period.
Jan hits seven
Schlaudraff’s hunger for goals on this particular evening knew no bounds as the striker netted again on 53 and 66 minutes to make the score 9-4, Van Buyten having chipped in Bayern’s eighth on the hour. Schweinsteiger then made it double figures after 77 minutes.
Former Aachen star Schlaudraff took his personal tally to an impressive seven with the champions’ final goal eleven minutes from time. “He was superb tonight and scored a couple of terrific goals,“ Hitzfeld enthused. The honour of netting the last goal of the night fell to the home side’s Daniel Rasch, rousing the crowd once again in the final minute. “We’ve really enjoyed ourselves here,“ Hitzfeld summarised.
