Default Match background | Bayern gear up for Getafe game

UEFA Cup favourites FC Bayern München host rank outsiders Getafe CF in the quarter-finals with Michael Laudrup seeking a first win on German soil.

• The two sides have never met in European club competition.

• Bayern have played in plenty of games against Spanish sides over the years – 33 in total – winning 17, drawing eight and losing eight.

• Their 15 home games against Spanish sides have produced eleven wins, three draws and one defeat.

• Bayern have won two European finals against Spanish sides. They beat Club Atlético de Madrid 5-1 over two legs to claim the 1973/74 European Champion Clubs' Cup, and then beat Valencia CF 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final in Milan.

• Getafe by contrast are up against German opposition for the first time.

• Rubén De La Red can at least claim to have seen the inside of the Fußball Arena München before, having been an unused substitute as Real Madrid CF lost 2-1 in the second leg of last season's UEFA Champions League first knockout round. His side lost on away goals with the aggregate score 4-4.

• Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has never won the UEFA Cup before, although he has twice triumphed in the UEFA Champions League – with BV Borussia Dortmund in 1996/97 and in his first spell with Bayern in 2000/01. The 59-year-old will step down at the end of the season to become the new coach of Switzerland.

• Hitzfeld is looking to claim his fifth German title with Bayern this season as well as his third German Cup, before Jürgen Klinsmann replaces him.

• Getafe coach Michael Laudrup had a more illustrious playing career than Hitzfeld, but the 104-times capped former playmaker, named Denmark best player of all time in 2006, is behind in terms of European honours, with only one European Champion Clubs' Cup triumph to his name – with FC Barcelona in 1991/92.

• Laudrup has been involved in a number of games against the German and West German national teams – five as a player and one as assistant Denmark coach: a 2-1 win against a Germany side featuring Bayern coach Oliver Kahn in 2001. However, he was not in the Denmark squad that beat Germany in the 1992 UEFA European Championship, due to differences with coach Richard Møller Nielsen.

• Laudrup also faced Kahn as a player in a 2-0 friendly win for Germany in 1996. In total, his five games against Germany as a player ended in four defeats and one win – a 2-0 at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals.

• The Getafe coach has also been involved in nine matches against German sides at club level.

• Two of those games were as a coach with Brøndby IF, as his side lost 2-1 away and won 2-1 at home against FC Schalke 04 in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup second round, winning the tie 3-1 on penalties. Bayern's Hamit Altıntop played both legs for Schalke, and missed a penalty in the shoot-out.

• As a player, Laudrup played seven games against German clubs, winning four, drawing two, losing one and scoring once. The four wins all came at, with two defeats and a draw away so he has never won a game on German soil as a player or a coach.

• Having played in the last two UEFA Cup campaigns with Sevilla FC, Getafe striker Kepa Blanco is on course for a third successive UEFA Cup-winning campaign, provided Getafe win the competition at the first attempt.

• Blanco played six games in the 2005/06 campaign, scoring once, but was an unused substitute in the 4-0 final win against Middlesbrough FC.

• He also featured six times last season, scoring three, but spent the latter half of the season on loan at West Ham United FC and thus missed Sevilla's penalty shoot-out success against RCD Espanyol in the final.

• Getafe and FC Zenit St. Petersburg are the only sides left in the competition never to have won a major European trophy.

• Bayern have by far the most impressive track record of the remaining competitors, having been European champions four times – in 1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76 and 2000/01 – as well as UEFA Cup winners in 1995/96 and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners in 1966/67.

• Getafe defender Franck Signorino played alongside fellow Frenchman Franck Ribéry, now a star at Bayern, at Ligue 1 side FC Metz in 2004/05 – although Ribéry moved to Galatasaray AS for the latter half of the campaign. Signorino joined FC Nantes Atlantique the following season, while Ribéry moved to Olympique de Marseille.

• Bayern's Mark van Bommel will have plenty of useful inside information on Spanish football, having played for FC Barcelona in their title-winning 2005/06 season. Zé Roberto also played in Spain with Real Madrid CF in 1997.

• Bayern's Luca Toni is the joint-top scorer in this season's UEFA Cup, level with Zenit's Pavel Pogrebnyak on seven goals. Team-mates Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski have also scored five apiece.

• Getafe's joint-top scorers are midfielders Pablo Hernández and Esteban Granero with four goals each.

• Toni returns from suspension for the Getafe game but Van Bommel remains within a booking of a ban.

• Getafe's Lucas Licht is suspended, but Pablo Hernández and Braulio are back after one-match bans. Goalkeeper Pato, Juan Albín, Javier Casquero, Granero and Mario Cotelo are within a booking of a ban.

• Having finished top of UEFA Cup Group F, Bayern defeated Aberdeen FC and RSC Anderlecht to book their place in the quarter-finals. Getafe won Group G, and then overcame AEK Athens FC and SL Benfica to reach the last eight.

• The second leg will take place in Madrid on 10 April, with the winners of the tie facing either Bayer 04 Leverkusen or Zenit in the semi-finals. The first leg will be at home on 24 April and the away game on 1 May.

• The winners of that tie will be the nominal away team in the UEFA Cup final at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.

Normal service will be resumed on Tuesday. “As of tomorrow, we’ll turn up the heat and start gearing the lads up for Thursday,” Henke explained. Spanish La Liga cracks Getafe visit the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals this week.

Ribery warned his team-mates not to underestimate Thursday’s opponents: “They must be good, or they wouldn’t still be in the competition.“ The 24-year-old revealed he had consulted Barcelona pair Lilian Thuram and Thierry Henry for advice regarding Getafe when the players met up on France duty last week, a conversation which is certain to have thrown up one or two interesting insights.

“They told me Getafe are technically good and hard to play against, so it’s important we win at home, preferably without conceding a goal,” observed Ribéry, promising fireworks for the crowd: “We’ll go after them and get on the attack.“

Some 20 km south of Real’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, the compact ground where Bayern are due to play the second leg next week. The match in Munich is the more pressing priority, and Demichelis declared himself far more concerned about that than his unsightly injury. “I rate Getafe as one of the best teams still in the competition,” the centre-half opined.

Micho has already watched TV coverage of the Spanish top flight outfit, and will join his FCB team-mates for a detailed video analysis of the club’s European opponents on Wednesday. Getafe lost 2-0 to Osasuna at the weekend, but Demichelis knows the Spaniards will be “totally motivated“ when they arrive in Bavaria. “They’re not just coming to Munich for a kick-about, they want to make the next round.“

Bayern are the team under pressure on Thursday, Demichelis acknowledged: “Getafe have nothing to lose.“ The men in red know they will need “total aggression, full concentration and high motivation,“ the Argentine commented. “The best thing would be to score early. It won’t be easy, but we believe strongly in ourselves. We have to go out there and show what we can do.“

Demichelis has already taken one of Getafe’s stars to one side and informed him of Bayern’s iron resolve to win the UEFA Cup. Argentina number one Roberto Abbondanzieri also keeps goal for the Spanish club side. “I’ve spoken to my good friend,” Demichelis reported, also revealing the placing of a small wager between the pair. The Munich star will be even more determined to open his UEFA Cup scoring account this week – and it will not bother him in the slightest if the ball goes in off the prominent bump on his forehead.

Default Team news - Klose and Poldi return, Van Bommel doubtful

Forty-eight hours ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg meeting with Getafe CF, the injury situation at the Munich club has shown only slight improvement. Lukas Podolski (swollen ankle) resumed the team training programme on Tuesday and Miroslav Klose also reported fit from a strained stomach muscle, but Mark van Bommel is doubtful for Thursday’s showdown.

“He’s very much in danger of missing out,” Ottmar Hitzfeld revealed in an FCB.tv interview, after the midfielder reported to the medical unit with flu symptoms on Tuesday morning. The probable loss of the Dutch ace, who joined Bayern from Barcelona, would be “a shame,” Hitzfeld commented. “He’s always fired up against Spanish teams. His determination on the field of play makes him one of our most important players.“

Demichelis fit

Hitzfeld can definitely count on Martin Demichelis for the European clash. The Argentine, who returned from a friendly against Egypt last week with a black eye and sat out Saturday’s meeting with Nürnberg, “has been passed fit to play on Thursday,” the coach announced.

Hitzfeld has yet to decide on the composition of his forward line against the Spanish top flight outfit. With both Klose and Podolski ready to play, the General has the luxury of choice in nominating Luca Toni’s strike partner. “I’m going to leave the question of who plays on Thursday open,” the coach confirmed.

Klose or Podolski?

Podolski is well in the running to start after scoring for both club and country last week. “Lukas has fought his way into contention over the last few matches. He’s come on and made an impact, which is what I want to see. The man who comes on as a sub needs to score occasionally too,” Hitzfeld remarked, although he also praised Klose’s recent displays.

Willy Sagnol will be obliged to wait considerably longer for another start. After recovering from a slipped disc in the neck area, the France right-back continued his rehab programme on Tuesday. “He’s been unable to do anything for 17 or 18 days and he’s fallen a long way behind now,” Hitzfeld reported, “he needs a period of intensive training to bring him back to where the rest of the team are now.”

This will be a very good game. I can see Poldi starting along side Toni. The lineup I would like to see:

Kahn
Lell Lucio Micho Jansen

MvB/Ottl Ze

Schweini Ribery

Toni Poldi

I know, I know -- I am adding schweini instead of Sosa. But we haven't seen much of Sosa recently so who knows if he is ready. As for Lahm, he needs to get his slow dumb ass moving. Right now I prefer Kahn over Rensing, especially for this important match. As for Poldi, he deserves a start over Klose. True, Klose adds to the team, but like Hoeness stated recently, Stikers are paid to score goals -- and Poldi has many goals in the UEFA. Anyway, Hitz usually is smoking something funny, so he will probably start with Lahm, Rensing, and who knows. Maybe this time Lahm will play striker -- LOL.

LOL.

Fuck burning his car man. I'd throw rotten eggs at his house too! jk

Well, i hope this guys take this match seriously. We are now in the Quater-finals. No more horsing around. Kahn over Rensing, definetly. I'm not trusting Rensing this days (and that's bad news for him, really) so i prefer Kahn on goal.

I rather have Sosa play the first leg, since it's at home, he'll feel more "comfortable", so to speak. So he won't be shaky on some away stadium. His crosses have been really well lately. It's not the end of the end of the world if he plays.

I vote for the Po-Ni partnership. Klose ain't scoring and i feel Podolski fired up to prove his worth.

Bottom line, i expect a serious & good game from Bayern Munich. This is the UEFA Cup. A tournament we MUST win.

If we don't win by two-three goals to nil at home, we're fucked.

I hope no surprises like against Anderlecht in the Allianz Arena. We should attack and keep putting them under pressure.
