Default DFB-Pokal, 1/4-finals: FC Bayern München 1 - 0 1860 München

The draw for the quarter finals of the DFB Pokal has paired Munich rivals Bayern and 1860 against each other in a mouth watering tie. Last year’s beaten finalists, Stuttgart face Carl-Zeiss Jena.

The draw was made by women’s world champion Simone Laudehr and she pulled out the two Munich clubs together to set up a potentially cracking quarter final.

It will be the 204th duel between the two deadly Munich rivals, with the two sides meeting last week in a friendly which ended 1-1. Bayern haven’t beaten 1860 in the last four games.

“Of course it’s a dream draw” admitted Bayern trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld.

“It’s what the fans of Munich have been waiting years for. We are really looking forward to this local derby.”

The reaction from the second division side was rather more reserved.

“Bayern are of course the toughest opponents left in the competition so we can’t really talk about it being a dream draw” said 1860 trainer Marco Kurz.

“A ‘home’ game would also have suited us better.”

The quarter finals will take place on 26th-27th February. The semi-finals are scheduled for 18th-19th March, and because of the Euro 2008 Championship finals, the Cup Final itself in Berlin’s Olympiastadion is booked in for 19th April.

It should be a great showdown. We have to obtain this derby victory. It's no friendly, so the folks can't excuse saying they weren't up to give it all...

Default Cup draw | Bayern to face city rivals 1860 in last eight

Bayern have been handed the draw so many at the club desperately wanted in the DFB German Cup quarter-finals, after Women's World Cup winner and former Bayern star Simone Laudehr picked out the TSV 1860 'Lions' to face the 13-times winners. The tie will be played on 26 or 27 February.

"Obviously, this is a cracking draw, something Munich football fans have been looking forward to for years," Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld declared. The sides last contested local bragging rights just over a week ago in the 203rd Munich derby, a mid-season warm-up which ended with honours even at 1-1. "The whole city will be buzzing about this, and we're really looking forward to this derby," Hitzfeld continued.

Guaranteed sell-out

Mark van Bommel was equally delighted at the news. "Unbelievable! Super, super, super," the Dutch ace exclaimed. "It's the best thing that could happen to Munich. This derby beats the lot, perfect!“ Bayern were drawn as the home side for the quarter-final tie, influencing a number of factors from the distribution of the tickets through to the choice of match ball.

In the other ties, Borussia Dortmund entertain second division 1899 Hoffenheim, Bundesliga champions and last year's finalists VfB Stuttgart welcome Carl Zeiss Jena, and Hamburger SV travel to VfL Wolfsburg.

DFB German Cup quarter-finals:

Borussia Dortmund - TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
Bayern Munich - TSV 1860 Munich
VfB Stuttgart - Carl Zeiss Jena
VfL Wolfsburg - Hamburger SV

Ties will be played on 26 and 27 February. The semi-finals are scheduled for 18 and 19 March. The Final, brought forward because of the Euro 2008 this summer, will be played on 19 April at the Berlin Olympic stadium.

Default Demichelis returns | Schweinsteiger rated doubtful for Cup derby

Lucio had a rough time of it in Sunday’s closely-fought 1-1 draw with HSV, twice requiring treatment in the first half against the robust northerners, but the powerful Bayern defender came away from the contest complaining of nothing more than a bruise or two, and will be available for Wednesday’s titanic German Cup duel with TSV 1860 Munich.

Monday also brought positive news of Martin Demichelis, Lucio’s regular central defensive partner, as the Argentine stopper returned from a ten-day lay-off with a torn hamstring and rejoined the squad training session. “It’s pretty good again already,” he told fcbayern.de after the workout, although Micho may not be risked in the high-stakes midweek fixture.

Schweini struggling

A question-mark hangs over Bastian Schweinsteiger’s fitness to face the Lions from across Munich, as the midfielder has suffered a recurrence of a calf problem which first cropped up in the build-up to last week’s meeting with Aberdeen. Number two keeper Michael Rensing is also a doubt with a stubborn dose of the flu.

By contrast, Franck Ribéry cut a high-spirited and cheerful figure at Monday training. The Frenchman, out for three weeks with a stretched hamstring, came through a 30-minute substitute appearance against Hamburg unscathed, a run-out which would do him the world of good, according to Oliver Kahn. “He’ll need two or three matches to get back into the swing of things,” the captain said. Ribéry is likely to take the next step towards recovering peak form against the Lions on Wednesday.

The Löwen of course

Anyway 1860 has alot of injured players and is not doing well at the moment in the league. So normaly you should be able to beat them easily. But it is a derby and you never know what can happen in a derby. Just remeber last season when Dortmund won against Schalke and Schalke because of that only finished second.

Default Kahn hoping for one final derby thriller

Bayern entertained Hamburger SV on Sunday, but an observer watching through half-closed eyes might have thought the Munich derby had been brought forward by a few days, as the Allianz Arena faithful spent the 90 minutes bellowing out chants directed at bitter local rivals TSV 1860. “They were warming up for Wednesday,” Oliver Kahn theorised, “the fans wanted to emphasise how much this derby means to them.“

The match means a great deal to Kahn too, as Wednesday’s DFB German Cup quarter-final represents the final derby of his playing career. The 38-year-old is making little attempt to hide his sense of anticipation ahead of the big day. “They were always highlights characterised by extreme emotions,” he commented on Monday. “I really hoped we’d get 1860 in the draw, just to have another one of those unforgettable matches.“

Kahn not without sin

Taking only competitive fixtures into account, the midweek meeting will be Kahn’s 20th showdown with the Lions from across town. His first derby came some 14 years ago on 21 September 1994, a 3-1 win for the red half of the city which saw the Blues’ Manni Schwabl and Bernhard Winkler sent off.

The pair are not the only men to have been dismissed in derbies featuring Kahn. His 19 clashes with the Lions to date have produced eleven red cards, five for the Reds and six for the Blues. One of the men sent from the field was the Bayern keeper himself. In his third derby on 2 March 1996, he and the Lions Olaf Bodden received their marching orders “after a tussle,” he still recalls today.

Thrilling memories

“I’ve played in so many derbies with so many highlights, both positive and negative, so many fiercely motional matches,” Kahn reminisced, thinking perhaps of Carsten Jancker’s freak goal on 11 April 1998, when 1860 keeper Bernd Meier completely overlooked the presence of the giant striker behind him, allowing the Bayern man to nick the ball off the shot-stopper’s toe and poke home into an empty net.

Neither has Kahn forgotten the 1-1 draw on 1 November 1996 featuring a missed penalty by Lothar Matthäus, or the meeting on 15 April 2000 when former Blue Jens Jeremies put through his own goal to hand the Lions a 2-1 victory. That was the most recent of only two derby defeats for Kahn, who has ended up on the winning side 13 times, with four draws.

All in the head

Bayern have failed to beat TSV 1860 in their last four meetings (three defeats and a draw), but Kahn dismissed the stat as a quirk. “They were all friendlies of some sort, which are always nice, but of no interest at the end of the day,” the 38-year-old argued. However, Wednesday’s meeting is a red-blooded competitive fixture, much to the keeper’s delight. “We’re highly motivated,” he declared. “We’re disappointed at failing to beat Hamburg, so it’s important we send out a signal on Wednesday.“

Bayern will be runaway favourites to make the semi-finals, but Kahn is expecting a tough battle against the second division side. “We know it’s the biggest match of the season for 1860. They have nothing to lose and they’ll be up for it.“ Mental strength will be decisive in the 204th meeting between the Munich rivals, Kahn believes. “Derbies have their own rules. There’s no point thinking too hard about tactics. It’s all a question of mentality and attitude.“

10-9 on penalties

The former Germany keeper has never been found wanting on those particular attributes. Kahn said he is looking forward to “a fantastic match,” ideally ending in a 10-9 Bayern triumph on penalties. However, a comfortable victory in normal time would be “easier on the nerves,“ the club captain conceded. Nineteen derbies in the past have clearly left their mark, even on Kahn’s formidable presence.

Yeah, I think we'll most likely see the Aberdeen line-up.

Default Facts and figures | Munich derby stats at a glance

Overall, Bayern are well out in front going into the 204th derby. The 'Reds' have won 104 of the 203 meetings to date, 50 have been drawn and the TSV 1860 'Lions' have emerged triumphant on 49 occasions. Bayern have scored 436 goals to 1860's 278.

There have been 35 Bundesliga derbies to date, 20 ending in Bayern victories with seven draws and eight defeats. Bayern are ahead on goals by 75 to 39.

The first ever derby was on 21 September 1902 and ended in a 3-0 victory for Bayern.

The most recent clash was a mid-season friendly played little more than four weeks ago on 26 January 2008. Luca Toni and Manuel Duhnke netted in a 1-1 draw.

The first Bundesliga derby took place on 14 August 1965 at the Grünwald stadium. A 44,000 crowd saw 1860 chalk up a 1-0 success thanks to Konietzka's strike.

The first DFB German Cup derby was also contested at the Grünwald stadium and took place on 6 May 1967. A crowd of 42,000 saw Bayern win 3-1 (goals from Kupferschmidt and Ohlhauser (2) for Bayern, Bründl for 1860) and progress to the Cup final for the first time in their history.

Bayern's biggest margin of victory came some 95 years ago, a 7-0 romp in the Eastern regional championship on 3 October 1909.

The highest aggregate score in any derby occurred in 1915, TSV running out 9-4 winners in a friendly.

The highest aggregate in the Bundesliga came on 10 May 1980 as Bayern strolled to a 6-1 victory, featuring a brace apiece for Breitner and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and efforts from Janzon and Niedermayer, Binz firing 1860's consolation.

Bayern's most recent defeat occurred some 18 months ago on 8 August 2006. A 69,000 crowd saw the Lions win Giovane Elber’s testimonial match 3-0 with goals from Antonio di Salvo and Nicky Adler (2).

Since the Lions were promoted back to the top flight in 1994 the 20 Bundesliga derbies have ended as follows: Four consecutive Bayern victories - 3-1 (21 August 1994), 1-0 (25 March 1995), 2-0 (2 September 1995), 4-2 (2 March 1996) - were followed by three draws - 1-1 (1 November 1996), 3-3 (4 May 1997) and 2-2 (1 November 1997). Two 3-1 victories for Bayern followed on 11 April 1998 and 7 November 1998, while the next meeting was a 1-1 draw (24 April 1999). Then the Lions fought back, first winning 1-0 (27 November 1999) and then 2-1 (15 April 2000). The six most recent derbies have all gone Bayern's way: 3-1 (21 October 2000), 2-0 (17 March 2001), 5-1 (13 October 2001), 2-1 (9 March 2002), 3-1 (10 September 2002), 5-0 (15 February 2003), 1-0 (22 November 2003), and another 1-0 (25 April 2004).

Sendings-off: Twelve players have been sent for an early bath in the 20 derbies since 1860 returned to the Bundesliga: six for Bayern (Nerlinger, Kahn, Ziege, Matthäus, Kuffour and Salihamidzic) and six for the Lions (Winkler, Schwabl, Bodden, Jeremies, Borimirov and Görlitz). In the 16 derbies between Bayern joining the Bundesliga in 1965 and the Lions' relegation in 1981 there were only two red cards, both for Bayern: Dieter Danzberg in a 1-0 reverse on 14 August 1965 for a foul on goalscorer Konietzka, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a 3-1 defeat on 12 November 1977 for clipping Hofeditz round the ear, after the 1860 man had called 'Kalle' a 'red pig'.
