Following maximum points from their first two Champions league Group B matches against Spartak Moscow and Internazionale, Munich travel to Lisbon as leaders of the section, ahead of opponents Sporting on four points, followed by the Russians on a single point and the Milanese who have yet to get off the mark.

"They're a young team playing fresh, attacking football," Magath warned ahead of the midweek meeting with Sporting, naming two major threats to his side's perfect record: "Liedson is a potent striker, and Nani is set to go a very long way. In my opinion, he's one of the most interesting young players in Europe."

Bayern can win, Sporting is good but not good enough to beat the German champions.

On Champions League matchday three, Bayern could take a giant stride towards the first knockout round should they take all three points away to Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday evening (Live in English from 8:30 pm CET on FCB Web Radio). The German champions will be boosted by an impressive 4-2 victory over Hertha BSC Berlin at the weekend, a performance chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reckoned was his club's "best game of the season."

"It would be wonderful if we could just carry on like that, but I fear it will be more difficult in Lisbon than it was against Berlin," Rummenigge continued, insisting he would be satisfied with a draw in the Portuguese capital. "That would mean we stayed top of the group, and would qualify with a win at home to Lisbon."

Magath expecting intriguing clash

The men from Munich lead Group B with maximum points from two matches, ahead of Sporting (4), Spartak Moscow (1) and Inter Milan (0). However, general manager Uli Hoeneß warned his side to beware the team currently lying second in Portugal. "They beat Inter, and they have an ambitious young team. We must take them seriously. If we fail to do that, we've lost already."

Coach Felix Magath, buoyed by the recovery from minor injury of Mark van Bommel and Claudio Pizarro, agreed with the board director. "It's their second home match, so they'll be looking for the points they need to retain a chance of getting through. I believe it'll be a truly intriguing match which will push us to the limit."

Few scoring chances

The 53-year-old boss declared himself "very optimistic" about his side's chances at the Jose Alvalade stadium. "We're aiming to set off for home with all three points, and I'm confident that's what we'll achieve in Lisbon."

Magath declined to confirm he would retain a three-man front line. "Sporting think and operate very defensively, so scoring goals will be tough. We probably won't get many chances in Lisbon."

Most challenging group opponents

The coach may revert to the formation which proved so successful in Milan with two strikers and a narrow four-man midfield. "It's not up to us to take the initiative in Lisbon, so we're not obliged to play with three up front - although we could."

"Sporting are probably the most challenging opponents in our group," Rummenigge and Hoeneß warned. "It's important we don't lose, so we'll have to concentrate," the chairman continued. Hoeneß was more forthright in his point of view: "If we win, we're through."

Probable line ups:

Sporting Lisbon: Ricardo – Abel, Tolga, Tonel, Marco Caneira – Paredes – Nano, Romagnoli, Joao Moutunho – Liedson, Alecsandro

Bayern Munich: Kahn – Sagnol, Van Buyten, Lucio, Lahm – Van Bommel, Ottl, Demichelis (Pizarro), Schweinsteiger – Makaay, Podolski

Reaction to Werder Bremen v Bayern

Felix Magath: "Bremen were worthy winners today. We had little to offer at the start, and only got into it after they went 2-0 up. We put our initial problems behind us and we gave ourselves a chance, and at the end of the day we've only lost to an own goal and a free-kick that should never have been given. It looks as though we have a problem with the weekend Bundesliga fixture after we've played a European game in midweek. We've done extremely well in Europe up to now, but we've got to be looking for Bundesliga points afterwards as well."

Reaction to Bayern v Kaiserslautern

Felix Magath: "Kaiserslautern were good in the first half and we were poor. We failed to put them under pressure, and we created far too little in front of goal. We upped the pace in the second half, and fortunately we were rewarded with an early goal. But after that, we neglected to add a second, because we could have made it into the next round more emphatically. We had three or four situations on the break, and we should have made a great deal more of that. The crowd was unhappy, and so was I."

Reaction to Bayern v Eintracht Frankfurt:

Felix Magath:
"I thought we played very well indeed in the first half, although it took us a while to get going. We looked confident after taking the lead, but we ought to be beating opponents like these far more easily, and not just declare ourselves satisfied at 2-0. Especially in the last half hour, my players had an opportunity to prove they're capable of scoring a hatful against teams other than Spartak Moscow. You're going to miss a penalty every now and then. When we go to Schalke, I want to see us play the way we did in the first half."

Magath expecting fireworks

However, the Portuguese outfit will not give in without a fight, as defeat in Munich would seriously endanger their chances of making the last sixteen. "They'll be looking for a result as they're still battling for second place," Magath observed, predicting an open and attacking game - although that would absolutely be to the home side's taste.

The scenario is certainly destined for a different character compared to the rugged defensive battle in Lisbon, as the Reds defended their narrow lead with only ten men. "We rode our luck at their place," Mark van Bommel admitted, "they're difficult opponents."

Reaction to Bayern v Sporting Lisbon:

Felix Magath: "Obviously I'd rather have seen us take all three points, but we had too many problems. We definitely didn't have the deal starting line-up. I thought Sagnol would be able to compensate for losing van Bommel, but it didn't work in the first 45 minutes. We were a little unsettled by the team changes and never got going. That was definitely our worst Champions League performance so far, but we still had a few presentable chances in the second half. At the end of the day, we never reproduced our form from the previous matches. I'm pleased we've kept another clean sheet, we've still not conceded a goal, and that we're through to the next round. We're still in a very good position. We have the home game against Inter, and there's no reason we shouldn't win in Moscow."

Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath says he will not be raiding the transfer market this winter.

Magath is happy with his current squad and is not planning any personnel changes come the New Year.

"We have a very good squad," revealed Magath.

"All we have to do is get the ratio between defence and attack a little better sorted than we have had up until now."

Meanwhile, Magath is confident long-term injury victim Sebastian Deisler will be available sooner rather than later.

"It won't be too long before he's back in the squad," he continued.

"He has been training with us for a few weeks and if he carries on the way he is then he will be a part of us again soon."

Bayern needs a striker desperately imo.
Only Makaay isn't good enough.
Pizarro is a good 2nd option, Podolski is being crap so far and Santa Cruz has always been shit!

Reaction to Schalke v Bayern:

Felix Magath:
"I'm still angry about the first half-hour. We failed to show up and went two goals down, just like we did in Bremen. What I really liked was that even at 2-0, we still believed in ourselves, went on to equalise, and made sure we came away with a deserved point. Pulling one back just before half-time was vital. That boosted our morale and devastated our opponents. We need to carry on where we left off in the second half and record a clear-cut victory over the bottom club."

Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath was quick to praise Hannover for their victory at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The Reds went into the match bottom of the Bundesliga table, but stunned the German champions with a 1-0 win.

"That was further proof of our problems against defensively-minded teams this season," Magath told Bayern's official website.

"Hannover defended aggressively and effectively, and covered plenty of ground. We duly conceded the goal just before half time.

"My team bounced back in the second half. We gave it our best shot, we camped out in their half, but we created no clear-cut chances, so Hannover's win is a fair result."

Magath did, however, add that he expects his team to click into gear in the near future and close the six-point gap that Werder Bremen have now opened up over the Bavarian giants.

"We'll be stronger once our absent players start coming back over the next few days and weeks," he added.

"The team wasn't in great physical shape either. Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro for example, they both have a touch of the flu, and we only decided to risk playing them late in the afternoon."
