Default FC Bayern in the Champions League 2008/09

Below it is assumed that seeded teams in the 3rd qualifying round qualify for the group stage. When unseeded teams qualify other teams may shift to a higher pot.

Group Stage (32 teams)
Code:
Pot 1 coef. Pot 2 coef. ------------------------ --- ------- ------------------------ --- ------- Chelsea Eng 124.996 Bayern München Ger 92.078 Liverpool *** Eng 118.996 PSV Eindhoven Ned 91.610 FC Barcelona *** Esp 117.837 Villarreal Esp 90.837 Arsenal *** Eng 110.996 AS Roma Ita 81.934 Manchester United Eng 107.996 FC Porto Por 81.176 Olympique Lyon Fra 99.380 Werder Bremen Ger 74.078 Internazionale Ita 96.934 Sporting CP Lisbon Por 67.176 Real Madrid Esp 93.837 Juventus *** Ita 66.934 Pot 3 coef. Unseeded teams in the 2nd qualification round that qualify for the next round take effectively the coefficient of their opponent in the next round. The reason for this is that the draw for the 3rd qualification round is made before the results of the 2nd qualification round are known. In the 3rd qualifying round teams from the same country cannot play against each other.

3rd Qualifying Round (32 teams)

As it is currently, in the group stage we'll face one team from Pot.1, one team from Pot. 3 and one team from Pot.4.

Milan was in Pot.1, but because they will be competing in the UEFA Cup next season, Real Madrid took chance and jumped in Pot.1 from Pot.2.

If one of Liverpool, Barcelona or Arsenal don't qualify, than we'll jump to the first pot, which would mean we'd have to face one team from Pot.2, one from Pot.3 and one from Pot.4.

Not sure if I'm correct (!!!), but I think the UEFA Cup elimination in the semi-finals cost us being behind Real Madrid.

European dream
Reds focus efforts on Champions League

Quote:
Bayern have claimed the German double four times since 2003 to underscore their status as the non plus ultra on the domestic scene, but the Bavarians' recent record in Europe leaves plenty to be desired. Since winning the Champions League in 2001, the Reds have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals, while last term's UEFA Cup campaign ended in the last four.

Under new boss Jürgen Klinsmann, Germany's number one club are determined to make up for a few lean years, and have named the Champions League final in Rome on 27 May as a target for the coming term. "We judge ourselves against the top teams and have to prove our international credentials. We'll do everything in our power to make the final in Rome. That's our goal,“ Klinsmann declared at the official season-opening event on Tuesday.

Borowski eyes Champions League glory

One item on the agenda was the unveiling of the club's new Champions League kit, an all-white strip with red trim on the shirt, shorts and socks in which the men from Munich will do battle with the best teams from England, Spain and Italy. "I'm looking forward to the new season and the Champions League. We want to go as far as we can and make an impression,“ declared summer signing Tim Borowski.

The coach and the players are not the only people in the game to have set their sights on 27 May 2009. "We all share the dream, but we're not the only ones with the same dream. Many other clubs have it too. It'll be unbelievably difficult,“ chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge warned, "but we've done everything conceivable to make our mark in Europe this season. On a good day, we're in with a chance against any other team in the world.“

Kahn senses big things ahead

Oliver Kahn is convinced his former team-mates can go far: "You shouldn't read anything into the UEFA Cup. We'll see a very different Bayern in the Champions League. Why shouldn't the team make it to Rome? Everything's possible, including a place in the final.“ The former Bayern skipper named players such as "Philipp Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who've all taken another step forward in recent months. In fact, the whole team has come on. I believe Bayern can go a very long way indeed."

Now, now.

I know we aren't looking good at the moment but let's take 1 game at a time.

The Group Stage hasn't kicked off and it could give us time to fix what it needs to be fixed.

Still 3 Weeks for the CL, I think that we have time to correct our mistakes and to get better.

Liverpool and Standard de Liege played a 0-0 draw in Beligum.

The second match is being played right now at Anfield, and it's in extra time.
It's 0-0 aswell. Penalties to follow up shortly, if no goals are scored.

If Liverpool doesn't make it, then FC Bayern moves up to Pot 1.

The draw is tomorrow by the way, just to remind you.

There are some really tough teams even in Pot 4, and of course there are some really awesome teams in pots 1 through 3 -- so we are going to have a really tough time.

With losing Jensen, Altintop now on a long injury lay off, with Lell being shit, Van Buyten with his head up his ass, Poldi acting like a fucking whiner again about not starting every fucking game, with Ribery barely going to return in time for the CL to start, with Rensing not being Kahn, with Van Bommel being sent off every game, with Klose failing to score anymore, and with Klinsmann continuing to play experimentation and act like he knows what he is doing -- we are fucked.

I hate to point out all the obvious points, but at the beginning of Summer I was hopeful with our depth, at this point I keep asking: what depth? we just don't have it anymore. We have too many starting players who just don't have experience. Unless Bayern hit the transfer market in the next couple of days with at least 3 signings -- 1 or 2 in defense and the rest in either Midfield or a forward then we aren't going out of the group phase except by luck, but we definitely won't make it beyond the Quarter finals -- not with our squad like it is.

Oh, Nostradamus!!

You have to be really unlucky to get a draw like that! Not happening.
