DFB-Pokal, Rnd of 16: Wuppertal SV 2 - 5 FC Bayern München
Bayern will travel to face third division Wuppertaler SV in the DFB Cup Round of 16, after German women’s international Renate Lingor performed the draw live on Thursday evening TV. Munich scraped past another third-tier club, Wacker Burghausen, in the first round.
“Obviously, we’ll be favourites in Wuppertal,” Ottmar Hitzfeld said in a first reaction to the draw, “but we’ve not forgotten Burghausen. We’re well aware of what lower division teams are capable of in front of a full house in their biggest game of the season.“
Wuppertal’s illustrious victims
Wuppertal have already claimed two notable scalps in this term’s competition, defeating second division Erzgebirge Aue 4-3 on penalties in the first round, before knocking out the Bundesliga’s eighth-placed club Hertha BSC Berlin 2-0 in midweek. “We’ll have to be on our guard and play with enormous concentration, but it should be within our grasp,” Hitzfeld continued, “our aim is to make the final in Berlin, and we don’t intend Wuppertaler SV to stop us.“
Wuppertal coach Wolfgang Jerat confessed he had been hoping for a local derby against Schalke 04, but was still delighted at the prospect of facing Bayern. It would be “more difficult“ to survive against the 13-times winners, but the club was looking forward to the match “immensely. Taking on Bayern Munich in a competitive match is a fantastic challenge for Wuppertal and for us.“
Memories of 2004
Bayern last visited Wuppertal in January 2004. In a closely-fought friendly match, a 25,300 crowd at the Zoo stadium saw Munich defeat the former Bundesliga outfit 5-3. The Round of 16 tie between the side lying second in the third division north and the Bundesliga leaders will be played on 29 or 30 January 2008.

They seem to be a strong team, clearly cup fighters.
They can be another Burghausen in front of us.
But, we shouldn't let that happen.
I would have prefered the tie at home of course.
It will be very dangerous away.
I'm not afraid of them. I'm condfident we'll go through to Berlin.

not sure about that one. Can be an advantage for us if wuppertal is intimidated by the big crowd they are not used to. Or if they overpace and are dead after the first half. THe longer they can hold the 0-0 the worse for us. If they can hold it till the 60th we are in big shit.
If we score an early goal we will win 3 or 4-0

^ We must play cool and calm. If we let the anxiety get to us we're fucked.

Wuppertal boss Jerat: ‘Promotion is our priority this season’
The German Cup Round of 16 encounter with Bayern rates as the match of the decade for Wuppertaler SV. To cope with the massive demand for tickets, the third division north leaders have switched Tuesday’s game to the Arena AufSchalke, where a crowd in excess of 61,000 will watch coach Wolfgang Jerat’s men attempt to upset the overwhelming favourites from Munich. “But promotion is and remains our absolute priority,” Jerat told fcbayern.de.
Interview: Wolfgang Jerat
fcbayern.de: Wolfgang Jerat, does the twentieth of March 1993 man anything to you?
Wolfgang Jerat: “Oh yes, I was 1. FC Köln coach when we lost 3-0 to Bayern. We were well beaten, frankly. We basically didn’t stand a chance. The only good thing was that I came away with a nice snapshot of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, my son Tim [now a member of the Wuppertal squad – Ed.] and myself. I still have the photo.“
fcbayern.de: What’s your plan for beating Bayern this time?
Jerat: “Obviously it’ll be unbelievably difficult. Our main aim is to play our part in entertaining the 61,500 crowd, although we don’t want to end up as Bayern’s plaything.“
fcbayern.de: You have a reputation for favouring attacking football. Will attack be the best form of defence against Bayern?
Jerat: “You know the saying: if we have the ball, they can’t score, and that applies here. If we have a chance to get forward, we’ll do so. We have a good forward line, as our results in the third division prove.“
fcbayern.de: The Cup tie has been moved to Schalke. Is that good or bad from a sporting point of view?
Jerat: “It’s a slight advantage for Bayern, because they’re familiar with the stadium. But regardless of where the game’s played, we won’t make the next round unless we rise above ourselves. From a logistical and financial point of view, it would have been madness to play in Wuppertal. The capacity is only 16,500 at the moment due to reconstruction.“
fcbayern.de: Are you surprised that the game’s a sell-out?
Jerat: “Not in the slightest. Our supporters are really up for the match, we sold all our tickets exclusively in Wuppertal, they didn’t even go on sale nationally. But Bayern have fans all over Germany. I reckon they probably stocked up on tickets pretty quickly. And Schalke fans love watching football in their Arena, so we could have sold at least 100,000 tickets.“
fcbayern.de: You’ve been busy in the winter transfer market. Has that been financed by the revenue you expect from the Bayern match?
Jerat: “You’d be better off putting the question to our President Friedhelm Runge, but I don’t believe so. The idea behind our transfer activity was to cover for the eventuality of promotion to the second division, so we won’t have to do too much next summer. That was already the plan before we drew Bayern.“
fcbayern.de: The third division action doesn’t resume until mid-February, but the Cup tie is in late January. Has that affected your mid-season programme?
Jerat: “Yes, it’s made it very complicated. Bayern is a genuine highlight, but we risk being distracted. On the one hand, I hope we’re totally motivated against Bayern, but also lay the foundations for a winning start in the league on 16 February in Düsseldorf. The coaching staff and the physiotherapists are working hard on that. Promotion is and remains our absolute priority this season.“
fcbayern.de: Every since the draw, the whole of Wuppertal has been talking about Bayern. Would a defeat negatively affect your return to the bread and butter of the league?
Jerat: “No, no-one in Wuppertal would hold it against us if we lose to Bayern. It’s important we put up some resistance and don’t let them blow us away. Everyone knows that winning against such an outstanding team would be a real sensation.“
fcbayern.de: If you could take one Bayern star on loan for the rest of the season, who would it be?
Jerat: “We’re completely satisfied with our keeper Christian Maly, but it would be really nice if Olli Kahn chose to see out his impressive career with WSV."

Preview: Reds open trophy hunt against Wuppertal
During the 22-day mid-season training period, Bayern beat Augsburg 2-1, the China Olympic team 7-2, and Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2, before drawing 1-1 with TSV 1860 Munich on Saturday. However, the first real test of the Reds’ form is Tuesday evening’s DFB German Cup Round of 16 tie away to Wuppertaler SV. “Warm-up games always lack intensity,” observed Ottmar Hitzfeld, reporting a renewed sense of anticipation in the dressing room ahead of the first competitive fixture since Christmas. “You can tell the players have set their sights high for the remainder of the season. We’ll make a start tomorrow.“
“We’re off again at last,” enthused Mark van Bommel, although the men from Munich may have mixed feelings about the venue for their return to meaningful action. The Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen rates as Bayern’s unhappiest destination over the last six seasons: the Bavarians have drawn twice and lost five times to Schalke since the stadium opened in summer 2001. However, against third division Wuppertal, the chances of a first win would appear better than ever before.
Pace to unpick packed defence
“Obviously we’re expecting to win,” Uli Hoeneß declared, but Van Bommel, recalling the first round where the Reds needed penalties to eliminate third division Wacker Burghausen, also issued a warning: “Naturally, we’ll have to earn it. Burghausen showed us how difficult beating a third division side can be.”
As in the first round, or in the warm-ups against 1860 and Düsseldorf, the Bundesliga leaders must deal with eager opponents prepared to fight for every inch of ground. “They’ll defend in depth,” Hitzfeld predicted, “so we’ll have to unpick them. We’ll need a very high tempo to exploit any weaknesses.“
Six unavailable
An early goal would make Bayern’s task immeasurably easier. “I want total concentration, a great deal of patience and determined attacking,“ Hitzfeld demanded. The head coach has already settled on his starting line-up, where Willy Sagnol and José Sosa appear to have won the battle for the disputed positions on the right of defence and midfield respectively. Six men will definitely not feature in the match: long-term absentees Lukas Podolski and Marcell Jansen, plus Andreas Ottl (hamstring), Michael Rensing (back), Breno and Stephan Fürstner (both omitted from the squad).
After the switch in venue away from Wuppertal’s half-renovated Zoo stadium, one intriguing question on Tuesday will be the nominal home side’s ability to cope with a 61,482 sell-out crowd at the Veltins Arena. The vast throng, some ten or more times larger than WSV’s third division norm, could put the minnows off or inspire them to new heights, mused Van Bommel, hoping for a sizeable Bayern contingent in the Ruhr valley: “We have fans everywhere.“
WSV aiming for upset
“We mustn’t freeze, despite the vast stadium and crowd,” urged WSV keeper Christian Maly. A place in the Round of 16 represents his club’s best Cup performance since 1963. After overcoming Hertha BSC Berlin 2-0 in the previous round, and defeating VfL Bochum 2-1 in a friendly last week, the underdogs boast a proven track record in upsetting top flight opposition on the day. Why should Bayern be any different, Maly argued: “We’ll certainly try and win the match.”
WSV boss Wolfgang Jerat has turned to unusual methods in an effort to prevent his men showing the Bundesliga leaders too much respect, ordering one of the teams in a training ground match to wear Bayern shirts. “I wanted the lads to get a feel for their opponents,” he explained. The third division north leaders will certainly not give in without a fight. “We basically don’t stand a chance against Bayern, but we want to give a decent account of ourselves and not end up as Bayern’s plaything,” Jerat insisted.
FCB target trophies
“It’s our game of the century,” declared WSV president Friedhelm Runge, but despite the minnows’ resolve, the men from Munich have the trophy in their sights and intend to book a place in the last eight. “This is the ‘easiest’ trophy, because you have to win the fewest matches,” Hitzfeld opined, and winning trophies is Bayern’s declared aim this season.
Probable line-ups:
Wuppertal SV: Maly - Malura, Lorenzon, M. Stuckmann, Lejan - Jerat, Lintjens, Bölstler - Rietpietsch - Saglik, Damm
Bayern Munich: Kahn - Sagnol, Lucio, Demichelis, Lahm - Sosa, Van Bommel, Zé Roberto, Ribéry - Klose, Toni
Also in matchday squad: Dreher, Lell, Van Buyten, Altintop, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Schlaudraff
Referee: Michael Weiner (Giesen)
