Default Jan at the double in demanding workout

Nineteen Bayern men featured in Tuesday’s warm-up win over gritty Fortuna, Jan Schlaudraff’s second-half brace ultimately settling a lively contest.

A 31,058 crowd, protected from the elements by the closed roof at the magnificently appointed LTU Arena in Düsseldorf, saw the Bundesliga leaders up the tempo after an evenly-matched opening and take a half-time lead through World Cup winner Luca Toni.

Four-goal flurry

A raft of changes from both sides at the break only served to up the entertainment value in the second period, Schlaudraff netting a double to keep Bavarian noses in front despite the third division team twice reducing the arrears through young Christian Erwig and veteran Olivier de Cock.

With one friendly to go until the competitive action resumes in the German Cup a week from now, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will have gained useful insights into individual form and fitness from the whistle-stop trip to the Rhineland.

Start for Breno

Injury prevented Franck Ribery and Lukas Podolski from travelling, but Hitzfeld still sent out a strong starting line-up against the side lying sixth in the third division.

Willy Sagnol featured at right-back with Christian Lell switching to the left, and young Brazilian signing Breno was handed another run-out alongside experienced fellow-countryman Lucio.

Andi Ottl anchored the midfield alongside Mark van Bommel, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jose Sosa in the wide positions, the Argentine in a less familiar role on the left flank. Up front, Bayern began with first-choice strike pairing Toni and Miroslav Klose.

Another Luca opener

Fortuna midfielder Andreas Lambertz saw his cross-shot cannon back into play off the far post, before Klose beat keeper Michael Melka to a dipping ball but drifted his header wide of the upright in a bright opening phase.

Sosa’s effort sailed over and Breno directed a header straight at Melka as Bayern shifted up a gear midway through the half, although Kahn was forced to dive bravely at Ahmet Cebe’s feet to thwart the Fortuna midfielder.

Melka pulled off a great reaction save to keep out Ottl’s drive after Toni’s clever knock-down on the half-hour, but the visitors were only to be denied for a further three minutes, as Sosa’s incisive through ball released Klose for a clear run at goal. The striker unselfishly slipped the ball inside for Toni to stroke home into the unguarded net.

Jan extends lead

Lucio rattled the crossbar from 20 yards in the visitors’ last dangerous raid before half-time, when Hitzfeld made no fewer than seven changes, with Bernd Dreher taking over from Kahn in goal, and Martin Demichelis, Daniel Van Buyten, second half captain Philipp Lahm, Ze Roberto, Hamit Altintop and Jan Schlaudraff replacing Lucio, Breno, Sagnol, Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger and Klose.

However, two old hands from the first half provided the early focus after the restart as Melka held from Toni on three separate occasions, although the Italian had the last laugh with a fine reverse pass on 56 minutes, sending Schlaudraff clear to slot home Bayern’s second.

Toni Kroos replaced the tiring Sosa as Hitzfeld ensured all his players saw a taste of the action, but Fortuna briefly rallied and young sub Christian Erwig twice came close before finally pulling one back on 71 minutes from skipper Henri Heeren’s neat pass inside.

Excitement to the end

The Bavarians hared up the other end and Schlaudraff capitalised on Jens Langeneke’s poor clearance to restore the two-goal margin, but the fun continued when Belgian international De Cock, on loan in Düsseldorf from Club Bruges, toe-poked veteran Markus Anfang’s free-kick past Dreher to reduce the arrears a second time.

The sides each created a half-chance in the last ten minutes, but winter training meant a few heavy legs by the end and an eventful game finished with a narrow win for the visitors.

Good win, another test passed. I'm not worried much about the score, yeah we conceded two, but it was a match just after a 7 day intensive training, certainly the guys were tired, and we also didn't play with the best team (of course, lol).

Default Rivals 1860 on Saturday | Lions test ‘more than just a friendly’

Just hours after defeating third division Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2 in a lively warm-up encounter on Tuesday evening, the Bayern party had returned to Munich ready for training the following morning. The meeting in the Rhineland, Bayern’s third win in their third mid-season friendly, had been “a good test,“ according to Ottmar Hitzfeld, who gained valuable knowledge about his team’s state of readiness with a week to go before the competitive action resumes.

Bayern face Wuppertaler SV, another third division north outfit, in a DFB German Cup Round of 16 tie in front of a capacity crowd at the Schalke Arena next Tuesday, where the underdogs are likely to show the same fighting qualities as Düsseldorf: enthusiasm, determination, passion, and very little respect. “We had a taste of what we can expect next week,” commented Jan Schlaudraff after contributing a brace to the victory over Fortuna.

Appointment with Lions

Tuesday’s 31,000 crowd at the LTU Arena saw Luca Toni open the scoring in the first half. The Italian, one of only two Bayern players to feature for the full 90 minutes, was involved in practically all his side’s best attacking moves. That in turn is testament to his complete and uninterrupted participation in the mid-season fitness programme, in stark contrast to his injury-blighted pre-season. “I’m really delighted he’s managed the entire programme so far. He needs high-intensity training,” Hitzfeld remarked.

However, the training burden at the club will now be eased back, as the coaching staff aim to shake the weariness from the players’ legs and replace it with vigour and freshness. Bayern will be “much better rested” ahead of Saturday’s meeting with arch-rivals TSV 1860 Munich at the Allianz Arena, Hitzfeld said, not only because it is the club’s last and “most important test” of the winter, but also because derby pride is at stake.

Determined to win

“It’s definitely more than just a friendly,” the head coach remarked, aware that the Reds have lost all three of their most recent meetings with the Blues and have failed to score in the process. “We don’t want to put our fans through that again,” Hitzfeld declared, “it’s time to make amends. We’ll be trying to win the match whatever it takes.“

Nevertheless, the General will again seek to field as many of his players as possible against the Lions, handing every individual a chance to play his way into the team. “We’ll certainly be making substitutions. There’s no sense in only looking at eleven players,” he confirmed. Furthermore, with two vital fixtures coming up next week, it was important to reduce the risk of injury, although the coach is not expecting a particularly physical derby, “because both teams want to make a decent start to the second half of the season.“ Victory over the Lions would certainly fit the bill from a Bayern point of view.

Default ‘Vital pulse check’ | Pride and places at stake in Munich derby

There are no points on offer to the winners when Bayern meet TSV 1860 in the 203rd Munich derby on Saturday afternoon, but the value of the bragging rights in the city can never be underestimated. “We’ve yet to beat the Lions at the Allianz Arena, so it’s about time we started,” declared general manager Uli Hoeneß.

The Reds have come off second best to the Blues in the last three prestige friendlies between the sides, with the men from the Säbener Strasse still simmering from the most recent loss, a 3-0 reverse in Giovane Elber’s testimonial eighteen months ago. “Derbies are always important, and we have a score to settle. We know how much it matters to the fans,” declared Philipp Lahm, one of three Munich-born players in the Bayern squad.

Valuable situation report

Lahm is particularly keen to silence the gloating Blues fans among his family and friends, “so we’ll go all-out for a win,” the full-back insisted. “You get a load of stick when you lose,” agreed Bastian Schweinsteiger. Hamit Altintop, approaching his first all-Munich clash, knows a thing or two about derbies after appearing for Schalke against Dortmund: “Afterwards, you want to be able to hold your head up in public."

Bayern will go looking for victory, but not at any price, Willy Sagnol warned. “It’s three days before Wuppertal in the Cup and six days before Rostock in the league. We want to win, but we shouldn’t feel we have to give it 100 percent,” the France star advised. “We’re taking it seriously, but it’s only a warm-up,” chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge agreed.

Lions aiming for glory

The game represented “a vital pulse check,” Hoeneß felt. “The derby is a good warm-up for us, a good test,” offered Oliver Kahn, set for his final appearance against the Blues on Saturday. “The derbies are always fantastic, always dramatic, with countless highlights.“ Unsurprisingly, tempers have frequently boiled over in the past. “It always gets pretty heated out there,” confirmed Schweinsteiger, gearing up for a physical encounter.

However, the TSV 1860 camp is also giving priority firmly to the Cup and league. The Lions visit Aachen on Tuesday before entertaining Augsburg in the second division next Sunday. Despite a number of injury concerns, coach Marco Kurz said his men would “make it as hard as possible for them,” but cautioned his side “to be sensible about what we invest in the game“. General manager Stefan Reuter backed the coach: “We’re taking the derby seriously, but Aachen is what really matters to us."

Reds backing Blues for promotion

Kurz and his FCB counterpart Ottmar Hitzfeld are certain to make a raft of team changes at half-time, and will likely use the match to experiment both in terms of selection and tactics. “There’s no point in only sending out eleven players,” Hitzfeld announced on Thursday. The derby may even provide an ideal showcase for one or two hopefuls to put themselves forward in the battle for places in the team. “The match could be pivotal in deciding who makes the teamsheet for the next few weeks,” Hamit Altintop suggested.

The Bayern camp would be entirely happy if three Bundesliga points were at stake in the next Munich showdown. “It would be great if 1860 were promoted. The atmosphere at the Allianz Arena for a derby which wasn’t a friendly would certainly be fantastic,” Kahn commented. Added Schweinsteiger: “I hope they go up, because we’d like a real derby again soon.“ That would be a match where Bayern would give 100 percent or more in search of victory.

Default Bayern 1 1860 Munich 1 | Honours even in low-key Munich derby

The 203rd Munich derby ended all-square after Bayern dominated for long spells but needlessly conceded an equaliser to their second division rivals.

Lions shot-stopper Michael Hofmann was the busier of the keepers with two decent saves from Mark van Bommel in an otherwise muted first half, but Bayern’s first-ever goal at the Allianz Arena against their bitter rivals finally arrived eight minutes after the restart when Blues defender Torben Hoffmann put through his own goal under pressure from half-time sub Luca Toni.

The 66,000 present might have expected the star-studded Reds to coast after that, but an 1860 line-up by now largely comprising young reserves stuck doggedly to their task and conjured up a shock Michael Duhnke equaliser 15 minutes from time.

Starts for Sosa and Schlaudraff

Ottmar Hizfeld’s starting line-up had a first-choice feel to it, with Willy Sagnol back in his customary right-back berth, and Jose Sosa getting the nod on the right of midfield. The one exception was the absence of Toni, as in-form Jan Schlaudraff was offered another chance alongside Miro Klose.

Bayern opened much the better of the sides, Ze Roberto and Van Bommel providing a solid platform in front of the back four to launch dangerous raids down the flanks via Sagnol and Sosa. The Argentine schemer loosed off the first shot of the match after quarter of an hour, before keeper Hofmann excelled to keep out Van Bommel’s spectacular diving header with 20 minutes played.

Unlucky Van Bommel

However, the Bundesliga leaders increasingly struggled to make headway against the Blues defence, expertly marshalled by USA stalwart Gregg Berhalter, and the sides neutralised each other for a long spell.

The Reds rallied towards the end of the first half, but Ze Roberto was called back for offside when poised to score, and Hofmann gathered Van Bommel’s drive at the second attempt after a slick interchange between Ribery and Ze Roberto.

Half-time reshuffle

As flagged before the match, Hitzfeld made a raft of changes at the break, with Toni, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Hamit Altintop, Christian Lell and Andreas Ottl replacing Klose, Van Bommel, Ribery, Sosa, Sagnol and Ze respectively. Lions boss Marco Kurz went even further with a total of eleven changes at half-time and in the course of the second period.

The new-look Reds line-up initially lacked fluency, but when it came on 53 minutes, the breakthrough was simplicity itself, Toni pressurising his marker Hoffmann to deflect Kroos’ arrowed free-kick past his own keeper. Lucio, Kroos and Toni all tested reserve shot-stopper Philipp Tschauner after that, but the Blues’ young guns put up stiff resistance and netted a shock equaliser on 75 minutes when Duhnke stole in ahead of Martin Demichelis to nod José Holebas’ cross past Oliver Kahn.

No late joy

Tschauner now excelled to keep out Altintop’s 10-yard drive, before Schlaudraff slid an effort inches wide of the far post. The 1860 custodian then pulled out brilliant reaction saves to deny late sub Breno and Toni in a frantic finish, but there was to be no last-gasp winner for the Bundesliga leaders who left the field with disappointment etched on their features.

Bayern Munich - TSV 1860 Munich 1-1 (H-T: 0-0)
Bayern Munich: Kahn – Lahm, Demichelis (Breno 83), Lucio, Sagnol (Lell 46) – Ribery (Kroos 46), Van Bommel (Schweinsteiger 46), Ze Roberto (Ottl 46), Sosa (Altintop 46) – Klose (Toni 46), Schlaudraff (Van Buyten 83)
TSV 1860 Munich: Hofmann (Tschauner 46) – Johnson (Szukala 77), Lars Bender (Eberlein 62), Berhalter (Burkhard 77), Hoffmann (Benjamin Schwarz 77) – Wolf (Baumgartlinger 62), Sven Bender (Ziegenbein 62), Gebhart (Pagenburg 46), Danny Schwarz (Ledgerwood 77), Bierofka (Holebas 46) – Kucukovic (Duhnke 62)
