Default Kahn: We need to show a much tougher edge

Bayern Munich captain Oliver Kahn insists his side must demonstrate they are tough enough to win the Bundesliga when they take on strugglers Duisburg on Saturday with Werder Bremen hard on their heels.

Bayern and Bremen are neck-and-neck at the top of the table with the Munich side holding a slender one-point lead.

But Kahn, the former German captain, says Bayern must put Duisburg to the sword after winning just two of their last five league games.

“We have tended to believe we are technically superior and will impose ourselves on sides, but we need to show a much tougher edge,” said Kahn.

Bayern’s captain celebrated his 300th Bundesliga win in 542 games after last Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Bielefeld last weekend.

And coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is keen to see his side pick up their third consecutive win as they prepare for the winter break which starts on December 15 after their trip to Hertha Berlin.

“We need to win the two last matches to put ourselves in a good position for the winter break,” said Hitzfeld, who is unsure whether midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger or defender Willy Sagnol will be fit for Saturday.

Bundesliga preview: Bayern Munich - Duisburg

What: Bundesliga, Matchday 16
Who: Bayern Munich (34pts, 1st) v. MSV Duisburg (12pts, 17th)
When: Saturday, 8th December, 15:30 (CET)
Where: Allianz Arena, Munich

Relegation threatened Duisburg face a tricky task this weekend as they travel to league leaders Bayern.

Leaders Fresh And Ready To Go

Bayern have enjoyed the luxury of not having a midweek game and will thus feel better prepared for Saturday’s visit of Duisburg.

Last week’s victory over Bielefeld was a case of grinding out a result: uneasy at first and met by a hostile Arminia crowd, Bayern produced a solid – if unspectacular – performance marked by the brilliance of Franck Ribéry.

The Frenchman, taunted by the home fans for being ‘no Jonas Kamper’ (Bielefeld’s left winger), scored the only goal of the game from Toni’s assist.

Sunday’s win was an important one, for Bremen’s triumph over Hamburg the previous day had toppled Bayern from the Bundesliga top spot for the first time this season. Another win against struggling Duisburg is needed this week to keep Thomas Schaaf’s Werder side at bay.

Amid all the talk of comings and goings from the Allianz Arena this winter (Willy Sagnol in particular is said to want out, while Valerien Ismael’s move to Hannover is done and dusted), Bayern know they need to remain focused. “We have three games left [before the Winter break] and they are all clearly winnable,” said manager Uli Hoeneß.

Duisburg - "Nothing To Lose"

Duisburg haven’t bad the best of starts to the season, collecting a mere 12 points from 15 games. Speaking before last weekend’s encounter with Nuremberg, midfielder Ivica Grlic opined that MSV needed to win “at least two games” before Christmas.

Last week’s rather fortunate 1-0 win gave them three points, but will the Zebras be aiming for three more in Munich? “Just looking at the table, with Bayern up there and us down here, it’s a tall order,” said coach Rudi Bommer at his pre-match press conference.

“But we have got nothing to lose and everything to gain. We’ll try to remain compact. If you look at their last six games, they’ve had 2 draws and the other four were close encounters with just one goal in it. They’ve played a lot of games and some of them will be tired so we want to push forward and not just defend deep.

"I hope our lads fight like they did in our last home game and build on that self-confidence," he added. "It’s all about having that confidence to go on the attack and take a few risks.”

If the visitors are looking for omens ahead of Saturday’s clash, they may have one in Ailton. Set for a rare start, the Brazilian has never lost against Bayern in 9 games against them for Bremen, Schalke and Hamburg.

TEAM NEWS

Bayern

Bastian Schweinsteiger has recovered from his knee injury but may only be fit enough for a spot on the bench. José Ernesto Sosa could be given his chance as Altintop is out. Lucio is suspended and Marcel Jansen still troubled by his ankle, otherwise Hitzfeld has a full squad to choose from.

Likely XI (4-4-2): Kahn – Lell, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Lahm – Sosa, Van Bommel, Zé Roberto, Ribéry – Klose, Toni

Duisburg

Rudi Bommer still has a fair few casualties to contend with, a list added to by Christian Tiffert (meniscus). Georgiev will start on the right in his place. Brazilian striker Ailton replaces the injured Ishiaku up front, while another Brazilian, defender Roque Junior, remains touch and go after experiencing muscular problems.

Likely XI (4-4-2): Starke – Weber, Roque Junior, Filipescu, Willi – Georgiev, Grlic, Tararache, Mokhtari – Lavric, Ailton

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Bayern – José Ernesto Sosa (pictured)

The Argentinean youngster has made only one start for Bayern since joining in the summer from Estudiantes, a combination of injuries and tough competition for midfield places keeping him out. With Altintop, Schweinsteiger and Kroos either injured or out of shape, now could be Sosa’s chance to impress and justify his move to Germany.

Duisburg – Roque Junior

The former Bayer Leverkusen man had been a free agent since his release at the end of last season. But having been snapped up a few weeks ago by Rudi Bommer’s side, the Brazilian defender has become an integral part of the back four. His man-of-the-match display against Nuremberg last weekend showed he can still deliver, and his defensive resolve will be required once more against this free-flowing Bayern attack.

PREDICTION

I expect Duisburg to put up a good fight at first, but they’ll eventually fall away as Bayern canter to an easy three points.

Bayern 3-0 Duisburg

Default Schweini back in squad | Upbeat Reds gear up for run-in to Xmas

Bastian Schweinsteiger is likely to remember Thursday training for the wrong reasons: the midfielder collected painful knocks to the right ankle in quick succession from Franck Ribery and Mark van Bommel. “Schweini“ even needed treatment after the Dutchman’s intervention, and broke off the session as a precaution.

“It’s nothing serious, only a minor knock,” Ottmar Hitzfeld later reported. The Bayern coach himself helped to ease any lingering pain the player might have been feeling with a piece of good news. “Bastian will be in the squad for Duisburg on Saturday,” Hitzfeld declared. The General did not even rule out a start for Schweinsteiger, finally fit again after a knee inflammation.

Kahn exuding energy

Schweinsteiger will have left the training ground in excellent spirits, although the 23-year-old was not the only Bayern star in a buoyant mood on Thursday. Valerien Ismael, who sealed a winter switch to Hannover 96 the previous day, was visibly delighted at the chance of a new start after an injury-plagued eighteen months. Jose Sosa gave off a satisfied impression too, as he is certainly a strong contender for the midfield berth vacated by Hamit Altintop, who underwent knee surgery earlier in the week.

And captain Oliver Kahn appeared to be enjoying himself more than ever, hurling himself like a youngster at every cross and shot delivered by his team-mates in the final exercise of the morning, and marking every block with shouts and gestures reminiscent of his penalty save from Pellegrino to win the 2001 Champions League Final in Milan.

Key to success against Duisburg

At the day’s scheduled news conference, Daniel van Buyten was not quite as euphoric as his skipper, but still appeared in the best of spirits. “I’m very happy at the moment because I’m playing. Every game I’m able to play is important to me,” the towering 1,96 metre defender declared. The Belgian, currently in the Bundesliga side due to Lucio’s suspension, is hoping for a string of good displays to stake his claim for selection in the future.

“The mood here is always good, especially in the dressing room,” offered Mark van Bommel, “and it was good out on the pitch today as well.“ The upbeat atmosphere will be important in the run-in to Christmas. Bayern are determined to take maximum points from their three remaining games at home to Duisburg, in Berlin and in the UEFA Cup against Aris Salonika. “Three matches, nine points – that’s our target,“ Van Bommel emphasised.

You meant broadcasted live, I guess.

Anyway, I don't have access to the channels listed.

I think I've noticed Dubai Sports 1 on the list, I'll try and see if it works.

If it doesn't, I'll have to check the liveticker and get text updated.

Yep, only 1 change from the line-up that faced Bielefeld.

Default Sosa set to start | Hitzfeld demands complete concentration

Bite, passion and desire, the qualities club captain Oliver Kahn said had been missing of late, reappeared in spades during last week’s victory in Bielefeld. The same attributes will undoubtedly be required when Bayern entertain MSV Duisburg on Saturday, although the leaders will attempt to play attractive football as well.

“We need to find the right balance between determination and skill,” commented coach Ottmar Hitzfeld ahead of Friday’s final training session. “Winning is what counts in the first instance,” added full-back Philipp Lahm, “but we also want to play well. We’d like to offer our fans an attractive and commanding performance.“

Leaders at Christmas

Munich have topped the table since opening day, and are aiming to take another step towards the self-proclaimed goal of winning the so-called ‘Winter championship’, the unofficial title bestowed on the side leading the Bundesliga at the halfway mark. “Obviously we want to be winter champions,” confirmed Daniel van Buyten, “so we must take three points at home to Duisburg.” Hitzfeld agreed: “We’ll do whatever it takes to finish as winter champions.”

Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge called for victory in Saturday’s meeting with the Zebras, and in the last match before Christmas away to Hertha BSC Berlin, “so we go into the winter break as leaders.“ Should Bayern beat MSV, and second-placed Werder Bremen simultaneously lose to Hannover 96, top spot over the festive season would be secure in any case.

Duisburg’s potential

Duisburg are languishing second from bottom on just 12 points, and their solitary victory in Munich came 40 years ago, but Hitzfeld insisted a home win was far from guaranteed. “They might not just come here and defend, and that would suit us fine,” the General mused, although he is nothing if not a realist: “It’ll be another of those games where the first job is to prise open a packed defence.“

Before travelling down to Bavaria, MSV coach Rudi Bommer insisted his men would try and penetrate the Munich rearguard: “We’ll put them under pressure down the flanks and take an attacking attitude. We won’t simply withdraw into defence.” However, after the subsequent loss of five-goal Manasseh Ishiaku to injury (hamstring), that appears a lot less likely. Hitzfeld still issued a warning: “They have potential and a couple of good players we’ll need to watch.“

Sosa or Schweinsteiger

In terms of Hitzfeld’s line-up, Van Buyten will again stand in for the suspended Lucio at centre-half, with José Ernesto Sosa set for a first start at the Allianz Arena in place of Hamit Altintop (knee surgery). However, Bastian Schweinsteiger has shaken off a knee problem of his own and is also a candidate for the position “I won’t finalise the line-up until Saturday,” Hitzfeld revealed.

Regardless of the 58-year-old’s team selection, he demanded 100 percent effort from his players. “We mustn’t lose concentration. Dropping by as little as 10 or 20 percent can be dangerous in professional sport.“ Oliver Kahn could hardly have phrased it better.

Probable line-ups:

Bayern Munich: Kahn - Lell, van Buyten, Demichelis, Lahm - Sosa, van Bommel, Zé Roberto, Ribéry - Toni, Klose
Also in matchday squad: Rensing, Sagnol, Ottl, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Schlaudraff, Podolski

MSV Duisburg: Starke - Weber, Filipescu, Schlicke, Willi - Grlic, Tararache - Georgiew, Idrissou, Mokhtari - Lavric

Referee: Babak Rafati (Hanover)

Bayern’s record in the fixture: P25 W21 D3 L1 F78 A27
