Competing with the strikers

Following the early-season scoring feats of Bayern München new boys Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, fellow summer signing Franck Ribery is now showing his prowess in front of goal as well.

With the two forwards on nine goals apiece after matchday 15, the pacy French international took his tally for the season to four when he grabbed the all-important goal in Bayern's 1-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld on their most recent outing.

More goals than assists

That represents something of a paradigm shift for Ribery who gained his reputation largely as a "mere" provider rather than a finisher at his former club, Olympique Marseille. In 25 league appearances for the club in 2006-07 he scored five goals and set up eight more.

In his 14 Bundesliga games to date, Ribery has thus notched almost as many goals as he managed in the whole of his last season at Marseille.

Plenty of time left

On the matter of assists, his record at Bayern to date is not quite so impressive - two in 14, as opposed to an average of almost one every three games (8 in 25) in France last season.

But with only 15 rounds of the Bundesliga played, there is plenty of time yet for Ribery to boost that tally, as well of course as continuing to improve his own strike rate.

Doing just fine

So, as the statistics show, Franck Ribery is doing just fine at Bayern, and has clearly had little problem adapting to the style of play in the Bundesliga.

Ribery: I Knew What The Fans Were Singing

Franck Ribery has refused to apologise for his gesture to Arminia Bielefeld supporters after he scored the winning goal against them for Bayern Munich at the weekend.

The French international has instead stated that he was responding to their chanting at him and has no regrets about putting his fingers to his lips to silence them.

Although the chants were in German, Ribery explained that he knew exactly what was being sung at him and decided to answer back after scoring.

"I understood exactly what they were singing," he said.

"Something like that is normal in football, but it gave me special satisfaction to score the goal."

Striker partner Miroslav Klose has revealed that he tried to dissuade his teammate from taunting the fans as he felt that it did not help the situation.

"I said to him immediately after he scored he has just got to ignore the taunts," he explained.

"It doesn't help your game and it is an unnecessary distraction."

Ribery's goal gave Bayern their tenth league win of the season as they defeated Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 in the Schueco-Arena.

Default Ribéry settled and happy in Munich

Bayern Munich star Franck Ribéry wants to enjoy his form the best he can and the winger claims that he has settled in Germany.

The France international scored the winner in the 1-0 victory against Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday and was voted best player in the game.

Ribéry netted his fourth in the Bundesliga since his move from Marseille. Bayern’s record signing is settling in the German league and has become a decisive player.

The flying winger seems very happy at Allianz Arena.

The young player has impressed in Ligue 1 but his exertions make him need to rest for long periods every season since he plays in the top flight.

“For now everything is fine, I am happy with my football and with my motivation to play,” he told L’Equipe.

“Future moments will be more difficult because I could be tired, but as long as everything is okay I want to enjoy it.

“Life in Germany is okay even if there is the language barrier. Munich is a nice city and the fans are nice.

“We feel relaxed and safe. The atmosphere in the stadium is different than in Marseille but Allianz Arena is tremendous.”

Default Ribéry wins French Player Of The Year award

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribéry has been named as the French Player of the Year for 2007 and received his award at a ceremony on Sunday.

The 24-year-old won the vote cast by former award winners of the France Football-organised honour after impressing for Marseille, Bayern and France.

Thierry Henry came second, having won the gong for the last four years, while highly-rated Olympique Lyonnais forward, Karim Benzema, was third.

Ribéry has helped Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga table in his first four months at the club after moving from Marseille in the summer.

Having begun his career at hometown club, Boulogne, the winger then enjoyed spells at Olympique Alés, Stade Bestois and Metz, before joining Galatasaray in 2004.

A few months later he moved to Marseille where he began to make his name and in 2006 he was called into the French squad in time to play in the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Default Ribéry named Player of the Year in France

The year 2007 reached a crowning glory for Franck Ribéry on Sunday in Paris when the Bayern midfielder accepted the French Player of the Year award for the first time. The 24-year-old topped an annual poll organised by leading journal France Football with 126 points, well ahead of Barcelona striker Thierry Henry (76) and Karim Benzema of Olympique Lyon (63).

“I’m delighted at receiving the award,“ Ribéry commented, “it’s even more flattering because I’ve been chosen by such tremendous former winners.“ The Player of the Year accolade in France is decided exclusively by a poll of previous title holders, in this case including Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps and Henry, winner for the past four years.

Surpassing expectations

“In my opinion, this is a very important award,“ remarked Ribéry, seeing the honour as confirmation of his continuing development as a player. “It shows I’m heading in the right direction.“ Asked to name the most important phases in his career to date, Ribéry cited two seasons at Olympique Marseille and last summer’s switch to Bayern. “My arrival at Bayern surpassed all expectations,“ he opined.

The France international is now keen to add team silverware to his medal collection, preferably in the coming twelve months. “There are a lot of possibilities next year, with Bayern in the championship, the German Cup and the UEFA Cup, and with France at the European championship. With a bit of luck, it could be a great year.“

Recognition from Hitzfeld

Ribéry’s first few months at Bayern initially featured three goals as the Reds claimed the pre-season League Cup, before he contributed four goals and three assists in the Bundesliga. Munich supporters have twice named him Bayern Player of the Month, in August and November.

“He’s been the star of the first half of the season, and not just here at the club,” enthused head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, “very, very well done to him. I hope the award inspires him to do his best in our last match against Aris.“

Default Ribéry stunned by Kahn outburst

Franck Ribéry has has admitted that he was stunned by Oliver Kahn’s criticism of him last week as the keeper claimed the new players failed to understand the Bayern way.

The French international winger and fellow newcomer, Luca Toni, were the targets of an astonishing outburst by Kahn as he believes that they have not adapted to the size of the Bavarian club.

“The new players need to get used to our high expectations,” the Bayern custodian stated. “Bayern is not Marseille or Fiorentina – we are like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United.

“It’s not enough to make a bright start - one or two players have to learn that two or three good games aren’t enough.”

Kahn’s words earned him a suspension by the club, while Ribéry was left to defend his record since moving to the Allianz Arena during the summer.

“He is the only person to think this,” he said. “Lots of people have seen what I have done since the start of the season.

“I would have preferred him to say that to me face to face rather than via the papers.

“I was surprised by the way it came out. Bayern is a big club, but he should respect clubs like Marseille and Fiorentina.”

Ribéry then revealed that the situation is better now after Kahn apologised for his rant: “Things have calmed down now, though.”

I agree with Ribéry.

Not just him, not just me, not just us here at TalkSoccer, but everyone is surprised by Kahn's criticision over Ribéry.

Ribéry has been doing great since he came, adapted to life and team very quick, that nobody thought.

I can't figure out where did that criticism come from..
