Franck Ribéry will meanwhile have to wait a few weeks yet to return to the fold, following the successful removal of the support pins in his ankle on Thursday. Sporting director Uli Hoeneß reckons with the midfielder being back in action by "the end of August or early September...Franck can recover from these things relatively quickly - he's more of a flyweight than a heavyweight."

Ribery Named As Germany's Player Of The Year

Quote:
Franck Ribery's sensational debut season for Bayern Munich last year has earned him the distinction of Footballer of the Year in Germany.

The country's sports writers gave the prodigious French playmaker the nod over Michael Ballack and Luca Toni, thus making him only the second foreign player to net the award since Ailton in 2004.

"We are happy and proud that Ribery was named as Player of the Year," trumpted Bayern director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "That so many Bayern players made the top ten is a great honour for the club and testament to the popularity and quallity of our team."

Rummenigge was referring ot the fact that, along with Toni, Philipp Lahm, Oliver Kahn, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger also made it into the top ten.

What is more, Ottmar Hitzfeld, now in charge of Switzerland, was designated as Coach of the Year for leading Bayern back to the pinnacle of German football.

Special mention should go out to Germany and 1. FFC Frankfurt striker Birgit Prinz, who was named as the Female Footballer of the Year for an amazing eighth year in succession.

One touch per minute

Quote:
Franck Ribery was deservedly voted "Footballer of the year" yesterday. bundesliga.de takes a close look at the Frenchman's statistics.

Franck Ribery won the vote - carried through by sports magazin "kicker" among sports journalists since 1960 - with 224 votes ahead of Michael Ballack (115) and Bayern team-mate Luca Toni (108).

bundesliga.de took a close look at the Frenchman's statistics, comparing them to his last season with Olympique Marseilles.

Ribery scored as many goals as never before: eleven goals for Bayern equals the total he scored for Marseilles in two seasons.

The minutes on the pitch were almost identical at both clubs, but 78 shots at goal were almost double the amount of the shots at "OM" (46)

He also created seven goals for Bayern, as many as Miroslav Klose (joint top). He had created one more for Marseilles in 2006/07, however

Ribery had 91 touches in 90 minutes of play, more than any other midfielder or winger in the Bundesliga. Diego (Werder), a typical playmaker, had just 81

No other Bundesliga player tried more crosses than the French international (188). 22% found a team-mate

Diego was the only player with more dribblings than the Bayern winger (161). 47% of Ribery's dribblings were successful

Ribery got involved in 416 one-on-one duels for the ball (only six Bundesliga players in more) and won an acceptable 46% of these

The 25-year-old was fouled 85 times, but conceded only 29 fouls himself

Ribery Targets Mid-September Return

Quote:
Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery insists that he is happy with the way his ankle has responded to surgery, but stressed that it will be quite some time still before he is ready to make his return.

The French international tore ligaments in his ankle during this summer’s European Championship clash with Italy and underwent ankle surgery soon after the tournament finished.

The initial prognosis for his rehabilitation was at least eight weeks which, seeing that the surgery was in Mid-July, puts him in line for a mid-September return.

"The club has put in a lot of efforts to have my operation quickly and that I can be healthy again quickly," Ribery told the local press

"I've already trained very well, the ankle included. There is no pain and that's the most important thing. I just have to build up some more muscle in the calf."

"It's very important to be healthy again, to be able to work and to get back to my best level."

Ribery recently became only the second foreign player to earn the distinction as Footballer of the Year in Germany, as the country's sports writers gave the prodigious French playmaker the nod over Michael Ballack and Luca Toni on the strength of his sensational debut season for Bayern.

Ribéry and Hitzfeld come out tops

Quote:
Franck Ribéry was honored by fans when Kicker Magazine organized a contest to find the German Footballer of the year. Ribéry walked away with 224 of the 766 votes cast. This was the largest number cast by all voters. Second place went to Chelsea’s Michael Ballack with 115 votes. Bayern and Co. agree that Ribéry’s victory was completely earned and deserved. Over at the official FCB site, Rummenigge talks about how proud they are of Franck and how much he deserved the award.

A few other Bayern stars rounded out the top ten:
03. Luca Toni - 108 votes
04. Philipp Lahm - 69 votes
05. Oliver Kahn - 60 votes
09. Lukas Podolski - 18 votes
10. Bastian Schweinsteiger - 6 votes

While Ribéry claimed the Footballer of the year award, Ottmar Hitzfeld claimed the Coach of the Year award. With 264 votes, Hitzfeld easily beat out second place, who went to the former FCB Coach, Felix Magath with 131 votes.

Watch out Bundesliga defenders, your worst nightmare is about to return with news that Franck Ribéry and Luca Toni are both well on the way to recovering from injury.

Bundesliga Player of the Year Franck Ribéry is also on the road to recovery from his ankle ligament injury he suffered at the European Championships. It is thought he will be able to start light training this weekend.

His return to full training and then first team action is only a matter of time. “We’re talking about weeks not months” Klinsmann explained.

Woohoo!! The Franck Ribéry is back in training!!

Exactly 63 days after he was injured at the Euro 2008 (17 June 2008, France v Italy), he returned to training for the first time.

Ribery Edging Closer To Return

Quote:
Bayern Munich boss Juergen Klinsmann insists that he is happy with Franck Ribery's injury progress, saying that he is optimistic that he will be back terrorizing defenses by the end of the month.

The French superstar tore ligaments in his ankle during this summer’s European Championship clash with Italy and underwent ankle surgery soon after the tournament finished.

The initial prognosis for his rehabilitation was at least eight weeks which, seeing that the surgery was in mid-July, means that he is pretty much right in line in terms of timing of his return.

"We are working every day with much zest on Franck. He is getting sharper and sharper and is feeling more stable."

The Bundesliga Player of the Year was able to participate in much of the training on Thursday with the rest of his Bayern Munich teammates who are not away on international duty for one reason or another.

Klinsmann upbeat
‘It’s all going very well for Franck'

Quote:
fcbayern.de: Another man making a fast recovery is Franck Ribéry, who completed some shooting practice with the team on Thursday. What happens next with him?
Klinsmann: “Franck will gradually resume the full training programme as of the start of next week. He was with us for a while on Thursday, although our fitness team advised us not to have him there the whole time. It’s all going very well for him, and we’re extremely happy with his progress.“

fcbayern.de: So you think he’ll be able to take part in tactical exercises and practice matches next week?
Klinsmann: “Exactly. We’ll bring him back step by step, so he acclimatises to the movements we make as a team nowadays. We reckon on taking a big step forward with him next week.“

fcbayern.de: Is there a chance he’ll make the matchday squad in Cologne next weekend?
Klinsmann: “The point at which he makes a full comeback depends on how he feels. He’s been really brutal on himself in rehab training recently, which is often more rigorous and demanding than training with the group. He needs to rest for two or three days now, and then we’ll all be looking forward to next week, when he makes a proper return to the team sessions.“

fcbayern.de: Is the injury still causing any trouble?
Klinsmann: “We’ve been very careful to avoid anything which might provoke a reaction in the ligament which was surgically repaired, but it’s now completely healed, that’s what the doctors have guaranteed. It’s now all about him recovering his rhythm and confidence, the belief you need for one-on-one situations for example.“

Two weeks to go
Cologne trip ‘too early’ for Ribéry

Quote:
Exactly twelve weeks after sustaining torn ankle ligaments while representing France, Franck Ribéry is running, dribbling and shooting at goal again. The 25-year-old completed his first full squad training session of term on Tuesday morning, before scoring the first-team’s solitary goal in a 2-1 defeat to the reserves in a 50-minute practice match.

“I’m in very good shape,” a smiling Ribéry told FCB.tv afterwards. “I really enjoyed being back out on the pitch with the team today. It’s good news for me, after I’ve spent the last five or six weeks alone with the physios the whole time.“

However, this Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Cologne would be “too early” for the German Footballer of the Year. “Obviously I’m desperate to play, but I need another two weeks or so before I’m back to 100 percent,” he explained, naming Bayern’s opening Champions League fixture in Bucharest as his target: “I hope I’ll at least be part of the squad.“

“The doctors gave me the green light for team training, and that was what mattered most to me,” the player continued, but although the original injury has healed, Franck still has work to do in other areas. The player needs to rebuild the muscles in his left leg, and continue stabilisation exercises benefiting the ankle.

“He still has to acclimatise to the movements we make as a team nowadays,“ Jürgen Klinsmann explained a few days ago in an fcbayern.de exclusive interview. “It’s now all about him recovering his rhythm and confidence, the belief you need for one-on-one situations, for example.“

The Frenchman’s return to the practice ground on Tuesday rates as an important milestone in his progress towards a comeback. “It was hard to keep up my morale when I wasn’t able to do anything at all for three whole months,” Ribery acknowledged, “I’m very grateful to Bayern for doing everything they could to get me back out on the pitch as fast as possible. The club has really looked after me from the moment I was carried off injured. That wouldn’t happen at every club.“

Ribéry is now keen to express his gratitude in deeds as well as words. “The minute I get back out onto the field, I’ll give it my absolute maximum, just like I did last season,” he promised, “I’m hoping to enjoy myself, and give the fans plenty to enjoy as well.“
