Default Oliver Kahn's memories of MSV Duisburg

At the age of 38 and with two decades as a pro already under his belt, Oliver Kahn is nearing the end of a long and successful career. The three-time World Goalkeeper of the Year has made more than 550 Bundesliga appearances, half of them on opponents' home turf. Before each of his last 17 Bundesliga away trips, fcbayern.de presents Kahn's memories of previous visits to the ground in question, as the giant keeper recalls unusual incidents and oddball situations, but also moments of sporting drama and emotion. The final visit is to Duisburg.

Kahn's memories of MSV Duisburg:

“After more than two decades as a pro, the moment has finally arrived, as I pack my kit and head off to an away game for the last time. Over the last few weeks, many people have asked me whether I’m deriving special enjoyment from these last few matches, whether they mean more to me or feel different. But my answer is no. You can’t change things mentally when you’ve basically spent 20 years being programmed to prepare for and play in these games. Besides, what is there to enjoy? We’re playing in Duisburg, they’re battling against relegation and we have to stay focused, because there are other teams involved too. We can’t simply ease up, we have to concentrate right to the end.

I’ve not played that often in Duisburg but there’s always been something memorable about my appearances there. I associate MSV with my very first match at the Wedau stadium, back when I played for Karlsruher SC. We were 5-1 down after just 37 minutes. At half-time, our coach Winnie Schäfer just told us to go back out and make it to the final whistle as best we could. We ended up losing 6-2. The thing that hurt me most as a goalkeeper was Duisburg striker Michael Tönnies scoring five. That was amazing, the kind of thing you experience maybe once or twice in a career – whether as a goalkeeper or a striker.

A couple of years later, Bayern visited Duisburg on matchday 33, just as we’re doing now. We were two points behind leaders Kaiserslautern, and could have taken the title race to the last day if we’d won, but we couldn’t manage anything better than a goalless draw, and that was that for the trophy. Two minutes from time, Mario Basler had a huge chance with a free-kick, but Duisburg keeper Gill made a fantastic save. He was also one of the first to come up and console me afterwards. Fortunately, we’ve already sealed the title in advance of kick-off this time, so at least in this respect, I should be able to enjoy my last match as a professional, at least to a certain extent.“

Default Toni and Ribéry sidelined | Injuries take toll ahead of last away trip

Ottmar Hitzfeld and the squad flew from Munich to Düsseldorf and then transferred to the team hotel in Essen on Friday evening, the last time the head coach supervises a Bayern party for an away Bundesliga fixture. On Saturday lunchtime, the team bus departs for the MSV Arena where the newly-crowned champions face Duisburg at 3.30 pm.

The Bayern coach is leaving club football this summer, but there would be no place for sentiment on Saturday, he insisted after a final pre-match training session at the Säbener Straße. Instead, the General is relishing his last few days at the helm. The 59-year-old’s remaining games in charge are Duisburg, a benefit match in Darmstadt next Tuesday, the final Bundesliga fixture a week from now at home to Hertha BSC, and then two friendlies on the ten-day post-season Asia tour.

Zebras fighting for survival

Duisburg almost certainly represents the stiffest challenge for Hitzfeld and his team. Bayern have nothing but pride to play for after sealing the double last weekend, but the Zebras are still in a desperate fight for their top flight survival and must win to keep alive their faint hopes of avoiding the drop. “It’ll be a high-temperature match,” Hitzfeld warned.

The coach is without a clutch of his highest-profile stars. Alongside Hamit Altintop (rehab after surgery), Miroslav Klose (broken nose) and Lucio (operation on lower leg), household names Luca Toni and Franck Ribéry are both out injured. Ribéry has pulled a muscle and Toni has a bruised shin, Hitzfeld reported.

Kahn seeks new record

Willy Sagnol was omitted from the squad for the 2-0 home win against Bielefeld in midweek but returns at right-back in Duisburg, with Bastian Schweinsteiger also likely to be restored to the line-up. Hitzfeld declined to comment on how Bayern would cope with the loss of both Toni and Klose. Lukas Podolski may operate as a lone striker, or Hanover-bound Jan Schlaudraff could be in for a belated first league start at the club.

Between the sticks, Oliver Kahn approaches his final Bundesliga away match determined to help set a new record for the lowest number of goals conceded in a season. “I basically never thought I’d get another chance to get this close to the record, which was set at a time when there wasn’t a back-pass rule,” commented Kahn. With just 18 league goals against this season, the champions look a good bet to surpass Werder Bremen’s 20-year-old record of 22 conceded in 34 games.

Another milestone for Hitzfeld?

”It’s another reason to give it all we’ve got,” agreed Christian Lell. Hitzfeld has made the record an explicit target for the last two matches. “It would be good if we set the best defensive record of all time,” confirmed the Bayern boss. And as a final incentive, Bayern’s next goal will be the 500th scored by Munich sides under Hitzfeld.

No Toni, no Klose, no Ribéry and no Lucio.

So:

Podolski - Schlaudraff
Schweinsteiger - van Bommel - Zé Roberto - Sosa
Jansen - van Buyten - Demichelis - Lahm
Kahn

or..

Podolski
Zé Roberto
Schweinsteiger - van Bommel - Ottl - Sosa
Lell - van Buyten - Demichelis - Lahm
Kahn

?

For the last XI, I've put Lell in left and Lahm in right, because they played like this against Bielefeld, and it worked quite good. Lahm but his best performance of the season. It can be Lahm in right and Jansen on the left though, like in the first XI.

I'd go for:

...................Kahn
Lahm....Breno...Demichelis....Jansen
...............Ottl.....MvB
...Sosa............................Schweini
.........Schlaudraff...Podolski

we will definitely play with one striker up front, as we don't care about playing Schlaudraff anymore, and we need a backup striker just in case. This will be Kahn's last away game, so I am excited for him!! What a sad and exciting time it is for Kahn. I am already crying, but happy for what he has done.

Even so mate, we can't throw in Podolski as lone striker, because he isn't a box player and playing with wingers would be pointless.

And as for the backup striker, there's always Sandro Wagner!
