Default Lahm sidelined with ligament damage

Bayern suffered yet another injury setback late on Thursday when full-back Philipp Lahm sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee while training with the Germany squad in Cologne. The 23-year-old is definitely out of the Germans’ Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday and a friendly against Romania in Cologne the following Wednesday.

The initial diagnosis was made by German Football Association (DFB) chief medical officer Dr. Sepp Schmitt after the player underwent an MRI scan on the injured knee at St Mary’s hospital in Bergisch-Gladbach. The player is now scheduled to travel back to Munich on Friday morning.

Headache for Hitzfeld

Lahm is already rated extremely doubtful for Bayern’s next Bundesliga fixture, a crunch meeting with last season’s runners-up Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena on 15 September. The injury blow is the second to strike Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld in the space of 24 hours: Argentine schemer Jose Ernesto Sosa was ruled out for at least six weeks on Wednesday after undergoing surgery to remove debris from a troublesome ankle.

Due to the long-term absence of Bremen enforcer Torsten Frings, Lahm deputised in the midfield holding role for Germany in a 2-1 win over England at Wembley two weeks ago. The Munich-born star’s outstanding display in the unaccustomed position made him a candidate for the job in a depleted German side set to face the Welsh. Germany coach Joachim Löw has yet to decide whether to call up a replacement for the Bayern player.

What? Lell does a good job.

No problem with him out there.

We have the replacement.

What I worry about is Lahm and all other injuries.

Default Ligament damage | Long lay-off beckons for stricken Lahm

Bayern suffered yet another injury setback late on Thursday when full-back Philipp Lahm sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee while training with the Germany squad in Cologne. The 23-year-old is definitely out of the Germans’ Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday and a friendly against Romania in Cologne the following Wednesday.

“My boot caught in the turf when I was making a tackle,” Lahm reported following his return to Munich on Friday. “There was a huge impact when my left knee hit the ground, it really dug into the turf. I almost blacked out, and I feared the worst.”

Fourteen days in a splint

On Friday morning, Bayern chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt confirmed the initial diagnosis made at St Mary’s hospital in Bergisch-Gladbach the previous evening, confirming that the damage was restricted exclusively to the medial ligament.

Müller-Wohlfahrt fitted the 23-year-old defender with a splint preventing the joint from rotating beyond an angle of 20 to 60 degrees, and which Lahm will wear for the next 14 days. “I’m not to burden the knee more than absolutely necessary for the next two weeks. The ligaments need rest in order to recover, but I can walk without crutches,” Philipp continued.

Return in early October

No firm deadline has been announced for the player’s return to competitive action, although he will definitely miss the two international matches, Bayern’s next Bundesliga fixture at home to last season’s runners-up Schalke 04 on 15 September, and the UEFA Cup first round first leg tie with Lisbon club Belenenses on 20 September. Lahm will commence a rehab programme at the Säbener Strasse training ground on Saturday, and could resume squad training in early October if his recovery goes according to plan.

Munich also remain without long-term casualties Willy Sagnol (cartilage) and Jan Schlaudraff (back).

Default Bayern must wait on Lahm

Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm’s recovery from a knee injury is to take longer than first expected, it was reported Monday.

The 23-year-old Germany international will be unable to run for the next two weeks, Kicker sports magazine reported.

Lahm has lost muscle strength as a result of wearing a splint.

He has been sidelined since injuring a ligament in his left knee while training with the Germany squad at the beginning of the month.

Lahm back running

Finally there's some good personnel news for FC Bayern.

German international Philipp Lahm returned to running exercises on Friday.

Lahm had suffered an inside knee ligament strain at the beginning of September.

It will be a few more days before Lahm will be back in team training, however.

Philipp Lahm (stretched knee ligaments) should also be fit again at about the same time after missing out since sustaining the injury in early September. “I’m guessing he’ll be able to play again in two to three weeks,” Hitzfeld said.

Philipp Lahm, who just recovered from injury, will return to match action earlier than expected.

Bayern play Red Star Belgrade tomorrow (Thursday) and Lahm will be a starter.

Because of some other absentees, Hitzfeld has no other alternative but to rush Lahm to start.

I wasn’t going to bring him back until Dortmund next Sunday, but now he’ll have to grit his teeth and start the game. Let’s see how long he lasts,” Hitzfeld observed.
