The phrase "meteoric rise to fame" might have been coined especially for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Just two years ago, only intensely close observers of the youth football scene had heard the player's name, but now he is talked about all over Europe. "I don't think I'm getting too big for my boots, but you have to believe in yourself to survive at Bayern," the youngster said a year ago, and promptly clocked up 26 Bundesliga appearances in 2003-4, his first full season as a pro after emerging from the junior ranks at the club. To cap it all, he was promoted to the senior international side and made a refreshingly spontaneous contribution to Germany's otherwise lacklustre Euro 2004 in Portugal.

i Agree , first time i saw him was 2004 euro and he look like a talent very nervous fell over on his first touch, was good in world cup. hes only gonna get better.

When he started being first choice in Bayern he was compared to Mehmet Scholl, now he is better than Scholl imo and he will improve more.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was forced into the role of unwilling spectator when Bayern took on Sporting Lisbon last Tuesday, but the midfielder is fired up and raring to go when he returns tot he team for Sunday's big match away to Schalke 04. "There's always an edge to games in Schalke. The crowd there isn't especially fond of Bayern Munich. I'm just delighted to be part of it again," Schweini exclusively told fcbayern.de.

fcbayern.de: Bastian, you were serving out a ban against Lisbon. Are you especially looking forward to the match in Schalke?

Bastian Schweinsteiger: "Of course I am. It's a genuinely big game, third against second. There's always an edge to games in Schalke. The crowd there isn't especially fond of Bayern Munich. I'm just delighted to be part of it again."

fcbayern.de: You watched the meeting with Sporting from the stands. What did you think of the game?

Schweinsteiger: "It wasn't bad at all. We looked extremely solid and kept another clean sheet. We had a handful of chances and could have scored at least once. I'm recalling chances for Roy and Claudio."

fcbayern.de: Bayern have played with three up front for the last few weeks. As a midfielder, what do you think of that?

Schweinsteiger: "I like it a lot. It gives me another target-man to aim for, and it also allows me to extend my game into the centre of the park, which suits me down to the ground."

fcbayern.de: Some critics feel Bayern are very boring this season...

Schweinsteiger: "I can't agree with that. Maybe people are just scared of us, as we seem to win the games they label as boring. Naturally, our fans want to see us put on a show, but that will never be possible every time. Points are our top priority right now, and then finishing the season as champions. That's what ultimately counts."

fcbayern.de: Werder Bremen look in scintillating form at the moment. Are they your toughest rivals for the championship?

Schweinsteiger: "They're in good shape, they're scoring at will and chalking up great results, both here and in the Champions League, and obviously we've been to their place and lost. But I think if we play to our potential we're definitely a shade better than Bremen. That's what we're aiming to do, as soon as possible."
