Default Schweinsteiger suffers setback

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has suffered a setback in his fight to return from injury.

The 22 year old midfielder took part in his first full training session on Monday since his knee injury in April.

However the young German international has suffered a thigh injury and will be forced to pause his comeback to first team action.

The thigh injury will be intensively treated at Bayern’s training camp in Donaueschingen, but it is not known how long the problem will keep him out for.

There is better news regarding Marcell Jansen for Bayern fans. After a bout of flu and a shin injury, the newcomer has been able to resume training. It is also believed that defender Lucio will make his return to training this week.

That just leaves long term casualties Willy Sagnol, Jan Schlaudraff and Lukas Podolski on the sidelines.

Definately not good news, sad to hear about this.
Ribéry will start on the left now, Sosa/Altintop on the right.

Default Relief over Schweinsteiger injury

Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger’s injury setback has proven not to be as bad as first feared.

Schweinsteiger was able to train for the full 90 minutes with the rest of his Bayern team-mates just 24 hours after it was rumoured he faced another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The 22-year-old missed the last six weeks of last season due to a mysterious knee injury and was only slowly working his way back to full fitness.

On Tuesday he was unable to train, but initial concerns that his knee would require further surgery were dispelled when it turned out to be merely a muscular strain.

General manager Uli Hoeness even showed concern for the youngster’s future, particularly with the amount of newcomers in the squad.

“If you don’t get through the whole pre-season preparations, then you do lag behind,” he said.

“These are injuries you simply cannot account for; it is purely misfortune. When we have a fully-fit squad, then there will be a strong competition for places.”

However, Schweinsteiger was breathing a sigh of relief on Wednesday when he was able to come through the whole session without any reaction.

Default ‘It’s looking good’ | Schweinsteiger closes in on comeback

Bastian Schweinsteiger is finally set for a comeback from injury, and could appear for the first time in three months when Bayern meet FC Albstadt 07 in a friendly on Sunday, the Germany star told a news conference at the club’s Donaueschingen training camp.

“It’s looking very good,” the 22-year-old commented. Schweinsteiger last played competitively on 7 April in Hanover before falling victim to a knee inflammation. The player has “taken it carefully” in pre-season so far, “but I’ve had no problems with the knee,” he insisted.

Taking nothing for granted

After weeks of frustration in which he could not even stretch or jog, the player has suffered a few minor strains since resuming a restricted version of the team training programme. However, he is now determined to achieve the fitness levels of the rest of the squad “in a week at the latest.”

Four weeks in advance of the Bundesliga opener at home to Hansa Rostock, Bastian is upbeat about the team’s prospects for the coming season. “Obviously, we want to win all our matches, and win the league, the Cup and the UEFA Cup,” he declared. “Our aim is to play attractive, effective and successful football.“

Overcoming obstacles

Bayern’s star-studded line-up was in itself no guarantee of success, he conceded. “Winning the league will be hard for us as a team. Everyone says we’re invincible. There will be a few obstacles placed in our path, so it’s up to us to clear them out of our way.”

Schweinsteiger remains confident of winning a regular starting berth. “My first priority is to regain full fitness,“ he explained, setting a target of the German Cup first round trip to Burghausen on 6 August. “And provided I deliver the goods, I’ll play regularly for Bayern and for Germany.”

Profiting from Ribéry

With Franck Ribéry set to fill one of the positions on the flanks, Bastian is not staking a claim to any particular shirt. “That’s up to the coach. I’ll give it 100 percent, and we’ll see what happens after that.“

After ten days together with his new team-mate and rival for a place on the left wing, the youngster professed himself extremely impressed. “Franck is a very good, technically gifted footballer, and I can learn a lot from him. I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”

Default Schweinsteiger eyes League Cup outing

After fully three months laid low by an illness, things are finally looking up for Bastian Schweinsteiger. The Germany international resumed the squad training programme last week, before returning to match action in Sunday’s 13-0 win in Albstadt and marking his comeback with a well-taken brace. The youngster is steadily emerging from the cloud of uncertainty which has hung over him since he was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease.

“The knee’s holding up,” Schweinsteiger beamed at the Säbener Straße on Tuesday afternoon. The player knows he is a little behind his team-mates in terms of fitness, “but I’m catching up fast, and I’ll be fully fit in time for the start of the season.“

Hitzfeld sees role for Schweini

The 22-year-old is well on course for a place in the team for the German Cup first round tie on 6 August. Schweinsteiger’s next run-out is almost certain to be Wednesday’s friendly in Monchengladbach, and he is also keen to feature in Saturday’s League Cup showdown against Werder Bremen. “We’ll see how it goes this week,” he remarked

Ottmar Hitzfeld declared himself delighted at Schweinsteiger’s return to contention in midfield. “Bastian is a very important player for us,” the coach observed, “he’s definitely one of our front-runners.”

This season he has to step up, Ribery and Hamit were brilliant today against Werder Bremen. Schweini did well too, but he really has to prove himself, or the bench awaits him.

Default "Schweini" is back!

For Bastian Schweinsteiger, July 5, 2007 must have felt like the day of liberation. That day, Schweinsteiger was finally able to do what he likes best: football.

Just three weeks later "Schweini" is already back on the big stage.

Impressive performance against Werder

He played 85 minutes in the PREMIERE League Cup preliminary round match against Werder Bremen, scored a goal in his team's 4-1 win and celebrated a great personal success: an impressive comeback in competitive conditions, after some people had already written him off.

Flashback: FC Bayern win their away match in Hanover 2-1 on April 7. The winning goal is scored by Bastian Schweinsteiger. Little did he know that is was going to be his last match of the season.

Small tick, big impact

"Schweini" complains of knee problems the next day. A few days later the doctors diagnose an infestion of the knee, triggered by a tick bite a few years earlier: Lyme disease.

A few people speculate that this could signal the end of Schweinsteiger's career. Professional sport isn't possible with a chronically infected knee is, they say. Schweinsteiger keeps his head down and works hard to get back.

Additional shifts

When he is back in training on July 5, he even stays an hour longer than his colleagues. While Kahn, Klose and Co. are already on their way home, Schweinsteiger and Ribery still hammer free-kicks towards goal.

"The knee withstands the stress", the 22-year-old tells a press conference the next day. And he isn't afraid to lose his place in the team, despite the summer signings. "If I can play to my potential I'm convinced I will be playing", he says.

Said, done. Physically fit and as strong as he has been in a while, the German international looks in great shape against Werder. He also assorts well with his new team-mates Hamit Altintop and Franck Ribery.

"We just try to have fun"

The French superstar already raves about playing alongside Schweinsteiger. "We are two players who really deal with the ball easily. We don't think too much and just try to play football and have fun", Ribery explains.

Experts and media ring the praises, too. So does the Bayern head coach. "Bastian is a very important player for us. He is definitely a regular", Ottmar Hitzfeld stresses.

League Cup, Burghausen, Rostock, Wembley

PREMIERE League Cup, Burghausen, Rostock in sight, Wembley in mind. First of all "Schweini" wants to beat Stuttgart and Schalke to win the season's first title.

Next up it's the DFB Cup match at Wacker Burghausen and the first Bundesliga match against Hansa Rostock for Bayern, but the midfielder also has the 22nd of August in mind - when Germany travel to Wembley to take on England.

"This match is one of a kind", Schweinsteiger says. If he carries on playing like he did against Bremen, German national team coach Joachim Löw should be more than happy to include him in his squad.
