"Basically, I'm extremely pleased with the way our mid-season preparations have gone so far," Bayern boss Felix Magath summarised after Friday morning training, before adding a significant rider: "Up until today, that is."

On the eve of Saturday's important final winter friendly away to top flight rivals Hamburg, and with just a week remaining until the champions' Bundesliga programme resumes with a tough trip to Borussia Dortmund next Friday, a sudden rash of injuries looks certain to deny Magath of up to seven of his players when Munich take to the AOL Arena turf in front of something close to a 55,000 full house.

Back trouble and fitness fears

"The plan was to field the line-up we'd ideally send out against Dortmund, but that's no longer within the realms of possibility," the coach lamented. Willy Sagnol, Mehmet Scholl and Owen Hargreaves all took part in Friday's workout, but are so far behind in training after lengthy absences, the trio will not be asked to travel to the northern port city.

Meanwhile, Magath used the phrase "very doubtful" to describe the situation regarding Martin Demichelis, Lukas Podoslki (both with back trouble) and Roque Santa Cruz (calf). Of the three, only Demichelis is thought to be in with an outside chance of appearing at the weekend. Fellow centre-half Valerien Ismael remains out of contention as he works his way back from a double leg fracture.

Boss calls for creditable display

"We're missing a few players I'd already pencilled in for Dortmund," Magath commented, although none of the new injuries is considered serious, and all the weekend absentees should be fit to train on Monday. Barring mishaps in the course of next week, the head coach will pick from close on a full squad next Friday.

Magath ordered his men to make light of the depleted squad situation and ensure the dress rehearsal against his former club goes according to play. "We have a duty to turn in a good display. We're going there looking to win."

This year Magath wasn't as stupid as last year.

And the training camp at Dubai was a great idea.
