Kahn offers apology to doping test doc
Bayern captain Oliver Kahn has issued a first statement regarding an incident at a post-match doping test earlier this month. In a written submission to European governing body UEFA, the 37-year-old has given his version of events at the mandatory doping control following Bayern's Champions League victory over Real Madrid on 7 March. Kahn used an interview with the dpa news agency to apologise to the doctor concerned. "The way I let my frustration get the better of me wasn't right. I'm very sorry," the veteran keeper declared.
Interview: Oliver Kahn
Question: Oliver Kahn, you're the subject of a UEFA investigation after "breaching basic rules of good conduct." Why haven't you issued a statement on the subject yet?
Oliver Kahn: "The UEFA allegation was first made public on Friday evening, but neither Bayern nor I received any official information from Nyon until after the weekend. That's why we couldn't react, and I'm not going to respond to media reports in this kind of situation."
Question: What happened at the doping test following the match against Real Madrid?
Oliver Kahn: "It was a stupid situation. It was the fourth time in a row we'd had a doping control after a match - and would you believe it, I was picked out of 18 possible candidates for the fourth time. I was disgruntled, especially because my family was waiting and I'd promised to hurry up after the final whistle this time. We wanted to go out together for something to eat."
Question: What's the problem with doping controls?
Oliver Kahn: "Basically none, but after games like that I just can't go. I drink water and health drinks until I can't take any more, and still nothing happens. I always need two or three hours to get it out of the way."
Question: Was that the case this time?
Oliver Kahn: "Yes - in fact it was worse. The team was celebrating a win over Real Madrid, they were all thrilled and ecstatic. And there I was in the medical room, watching the clock, knowing my family was waiting, drinking everything I could lay my hands on - and then finally, after two hours, at close to one in the morning, I managed it. I took my container to the doctor, but he said he hadn't been watching me. I had to do it all again."
Question: And that's when you "breached basic rules of good conduct"?
Oliver Kahn: "I was knackered, angry and upset. But the way I let my frustration get the better of me wasn't right. I'm still extremely sorry for that."
Question: What did you do?
Oliver Kahn: "I'll be communicating that to UEFA in my written statement today. I don't wish to comment any further."
Question: How did the doctor react?
Oliver Kahn: "He was understandably shocked. It's hard for someone who's not been involved to appreciate the incredible pressure in a knock-out game against Real Madrid, and then you get picked for the doping test. But there's no question about it, the incident shouldn't have happened. As I've said, I'm extremely sorry. I'd also expressly like to apologise to the doctor. It wasn't OK, and it won't happen again, that's a promise."
Question: Bayern face AC Milan in the quarter-finals. What are the chances of you playing, and what are Bayern's chances?
Oliver Kahn: "I've appeared more than 100 times in the Champions League, and I've never been in trouble yet. So I'm assuming I'll play. We have a score to settle with Milan. Last year's exit still hurts. But I think we have a better chance this time. We're in good shape, and the return is in Munich, just like the Real match."

Suspended Kahn to miss Milan
FC Bayern München goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will miss his side's UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg encounter with AC Milan in Italy on 3 April after being banned by UEFA for one club competition match.
Improper conduct
Kahn was also fined €12,339 (CHF 20,000) by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee for improper conduct at the doping control after the UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg against Real Madrid CF in Munich on 7 March. Bayern defender Lucio has also been fined €6,171 (CHF 10,000) for the same offence. Appeals may be lodged against the verdicts within three days of receipt of the written grounds for the decisions.

We'll only miss Kahn's experience and leadership.. Rensing with goalkeeping abilities should replace him well..
But anyway, we won't have much chances in Milan. If we can get a draw there I'd be pleased.

Kahn out of Milan trip with suspension
Oliver Kahn is set to miss Bayern's Champions League quarter-final first leg trip to AC Milan on 3 April after UEFA handed the club captain a one-match ban on Thursday.
Meeting at the European governing body's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee found Kahn guilty of "improper conduct" at the post-match doping control after the Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Real Madrid in Munich on 7 March.
Fines for both Bayern men
As well as the suspension for one club competition match, the UEFA Committee also fined the goalkeeper 20,000 Swiss francs. Kahn had previously issued an apology to the doctor in charge of the doping control.
Fellow Bayern man Lucio, who was also accused of "breaching basic rules of good conduct" at the same doping control, escaped a ban but was ordered to pay a 10,000 Swiss franc fine.
Hitzfeld hoped for leniency
Earlier in the day, Munich head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had been hoping for a more favourable verdict. "I'm assuming neither of them will be banned. My guess is they'll both be fined," the 59-year-old declared.
Club captain Kahn and the Bayern board of directors will meet on Friday to discuss the verdict and any potential appeal. Under UEFA rules, appeals may be lodged within three days of the club and player receiving written grounds for the verdicts.
Kahn's stand-in for the clash in Milan is almost certain to be his designated successor Michael Rensing. The former Germany U-21 keeper has already faced the northern Italians in the Champions League after deputising for the captain in last season's 1-1 last sixteen draw at the Allianz Arena.
Van Bommel also missing
The Bavarians are also without Mark van Bommel for the quarter-final first leg as the midfielder serves an automatic one-match suspension for collecting two yellow cards in the Real clash on 7 March. UEFA initially increased the ban to cover the return in Munich, activating a deferred one-match suspension imposed on the Dutchman following an incident in Madrid, but the sentence was halved on appeal in midweek.

Rensing conceded only a goal against Milan last year, and that only from penalty.

Yes but the Bayern defence would feel safer if they had Kahn behind them, instead of Rensing. Shame he will be missed.

Kahn is so much more or he gives you so much more than just being good in goal.
He is the spiritual leader of Bayern, his presence alone is worth an extra effort.
A blow this is, Bayern must adopt.

Bayern will struggle without Kahn and van Bommel, I hope they can score a goal at least. That would give us the edge

Kahn suspension | Bayern to await clarification from UEFA
Bayern have postponed a decision on whether to appeal against the one-match suspension imposed by UEFA on captain Oliver Kahn. The ban would mean the former World Goalkeeper of the Year missing the Bavarians' Champions League quarter-final first leg away to AC Milan.
The board of directors and the club captain have agreed to await the European governing body's explanation of the verdict in writing, before taking legal advice on the subject. A decision on how and whether to pursue the matter will now be taken on Monday.
Ban shocks club and player
On Thursday evening, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee found Kahn guilty of "improper conduct" at the post-match doping control after the Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Real Madrid in Munich on 7 March.
The club had hoped their veteran keeper would be treated leniently, but the Committee's shock verdict was a ban for one club competition match, and a 20,000 Swiss franc fine.
Fellow Bayern man Lucio, who was also accused of "breaching basic rules of good conduct" at the same doping control, escaped a ban but was ordered to pay a 10,000 Swiss franc fine.

UEFA banned Kahn for throwing urine sample
MUNICH, Germany (AP) - Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was suspended by UEFA because he reportedly threw his urine sample in anger during a post-game doping test, German newspaper Bild said Saturday.
Kahn received a one-match ban for improper conduct and will miss Bayern's first-leg match at AC Milan on April 3 in the Champions League quarterfinals.
The goalkeeper was tested after Bayern's 2-1 win against Real Madrid on March 7 in the Champions League.
The doctor conducting the test - Franz Kroesslhuber of Austria - said Kahn got angry when asked for a second sample, according to Bild. The doctor didn't see Kahn provide the first sample and asked for it be done again to conform to the rules. Kahn had tried for 1 1/2 hours to comply, then threw the cup, Bild said.
Bayern is considering an appeal.
"You have to show a little consideration when a player is emotionally high after a big win and wants to join his teammates as soon as possible," Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer said.
Bayern defender Lucio was also picked randomly for the doping test after the Real Madrid match and also charged with improper conduct, but escaped a ban.
Kahn was fined 20,000 Swiss francs (€12,230; US$16,500), while Lucio was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (€6,170; US$8,250).
Kahn sent a written apology to UEFA, saying he had acted out of frustration.
