Party with Olli
600 guests in rousing send-off for Kahn
Quote:
A 69,000 crowd watched Oliver Kahn’s last game on Tuesday evening, and 600 guests were present at an after-match party in tribute to the former keeper held in a theatre marquee adjacent to the Allianz Arena.
DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, DFL President Reinhard Rauball, DFB Team manager Oliver Bierhoff, Germany coach Joachim Löw, the current Germany squad, Bavarian first minister Dr. Günther Beckstein, CSU chairman Erwin Huber, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, adidas chairman Herbert Hainer, the FCB board comprising Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeneß and Karl Hopfner, and head coach Jürgen Klinsmann headed a star-studded guest list.
In his speech, Kahn thanked key partners in his long career, including goalkeeping coach Sepp Maier, former Karlsruhe boss Winfried Schäfer, and Ottmar Hitzfeld.
After a series of laudations, speeches and handing over of gifts, Hoeneß took the microphone to praise a “thoughtful and intelligent human being. Many of today’s young players could do with a pinch of his obsessive nature,” the FCB general manager said.
Hoeneß recalled the occasion he “really had a go“ at the long-serving club captain after Kahn disappeared early from last year’s Christmas party. “The walls were shaking and we thought the Säbener Strasse was going to cave in,” the manager grinned. Even this side of Kahn’s nature appealed to Hoeneß: “It made life interesting at Bayern.”
Music was provided by Ich + Ich, Die Prinzen, Paul Potts and the Helmut Zerlett Band in a show presented by TV commentator Johannes B. Kerner, before the party officially came to an end at around half-past two. The unofficial party continued for some time longer.
