Moyes looks to bring in 6 players

Everton's manager, David Moyes, is looking to make as many as six signings before the transfer window closes next month. Having guided the Blues to fifth in the Premier League last season, the Scot has yet to bring in any new faces so far this summer. A central midfielder remains a priority after Lee Carsley's departure for Birmingham.

But Moyes has revealed he wants five more additions before the end of August: "I think we'll be working right up until the window closes like everyone else. We need to bring in probably five or six players and we haven't brought any in yet. We need to be quite busy in the coming weeks. We're missing bodies and we've got injured players not available. Our numbers are so short and we've got injuries, too."

Moyes, who dismissed talk of Andy Johnson leaving as "speculation", was able to welcome back Mikel Arteta against the Conference club Cambridge United, the Spanish midfielder coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes as he works his way back from a persistent groin problem.

"It was good to have Mikel back but we can see he's got a lot to do yet," said Moyes. "Hopefully he'll be better with 15 minutes behind him and we hope that that problem is behind him."

Arteta's return was a rare highlight after Everton were a goal down through Andy Parkinson inside half a minute. Lukas Jutkiewicz's double put the Blues in front but Parkinson levelled and goals from Robbie Willmott and Mark Beesley sealed a shock win.

Everton's director, Keith Wyness, confirmed the team's interest in the Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Moutinho. The 21-year-old was man of the match in Portugal's opening game of Euro 2008 and had been linked to Chelsea, having played under Luiz Felipe Scolari, until their chief executive, Peter Kenyon, said: "Chelsea are not interested in this player." Sporting Lisbon value Moutinho at about £16m and Everton are considering a bid. "The arrival of Joao Moutinho is a big possibility for us," Wyness said.

We definately need the numbers and the club are starting to make moves it seems.
We definately need 3 players at least in midfield, needing a new defensive midfielder, winger and centre midfielder.
We have only 3 centre backs at the club and 1 fit right back so possibly a move for a player who can play those two positions as backup.
It looks like we are replacing Wessels with another keeper willing to be 2nd choice for the season.
And if Andy Johnson is sold we will need a replacement... as we havent replaced McFadden position yet, we can't lose 2 strikers and not replace them.

Yeah.. the only comfirmed solid movement of any kind which has been reported is the Ramsey bid, the trial of Stoijkovic and the current Moutinho rumours. With Aj looking at being sold.

The money really is a huge question. Technically in the year 2008 we have made a large profit in transfers and losing players, releasing or end of loans of Wessells, Carsley, Garnder, Fernandes, McFadden and Gravesen. Only bringing in Pienaar for 3 million. That means were 2.5million up in transfer fees, and wages is must be in the 60-70k a week less. But the money just hasnt turned up anywhere yet.

I imagine the club is holding some money back for the new stadium, no?

Do you think Everton will get big improvements in? As you said you do need alot of players in, maybe it'll be the quantity that will water down the quality of the player Everton buys.

The stadium isn't really looking like getting the go-ahead and it really does seem that we wont know fully our budget untill that is decided. The decision is expected in just over a week, but it could come at any time now. The money for the stadium will not be finances which could be used for transfers, such as selling the current stadium etc. The only problem is see is that there is a very wealthy backer of Everton who will have no reason to keep his money in the club, should the stadium in Kirkby not go ahead.
