Default Beattie Signs for United

Daily Mail
Quote:
Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson has pulled off a major coup by signing Everton's James Beattie for £4million.

Robson had been determined to land a big name striker to lift spirits at Bramall Lane following relegation from the Premiership and got his man on a four-year contract.

Sportsmail revealed last week that Robson had targeted the former England striker but Beattie was reluctant to leave Everton - particularly to drop down to the Championship.

Blackburn had expressed interest and Middlesbrough and Birmingham were also monitoring the race but United made the best offer and Robson's persuasive talking did the rest.

The manager said: "I'm delighted. We've got a strike force now that ranks as the best in the Championship.

It's a signal of our intention to return to the top flight."

Robson has signed winger David Carney from Sydney FC but has failed to land Wigan midfielder Kevin Kilbane.

Hope he can get his career back on track at Sheffield. He deserves to.

This really must mean new signings are immenent. We have the smallest squad in the premiership, and now have only 3 fit attackers after selling Beattie. With this sale of Beattie, we simply have to sign another 3 players, minimum, hopefully the positions being Striker, Left Back(Baines) and a Central midfielder.

Yeah. God knows how he scored 20+ goals for Southampton. But he seemed a great personality within the squad, and never once complained about being so low down in the pecking order upfront and said numerous times the pride he had at wearing the number 9 shirt.

But with Cahill and Vaughan out, all we need is an injury to AJ and I really don't know where the goals will come from. I thought we would had gone for Smith, and the rumour was we would sell Beattie in order to fund a Smith move, I don't know who Moyes has up his sleeve, but he must have someone ready to come in.... hopefully.

Will no doubt do well in the Championship but I think Everton have done some great business in £4m for him.
