Everton have made a last-ditch attempt to sabotage Aston Villa’s protracted courtship of James Milner, with both clubs yesterday submitting offers in excess of £10 million for the Newcastle United player. While neither bid for the England Under-21 winger has been accepted at St James’ Park, Newcastle’s valuation is close to being met.

Milner, who submitted a transfer request last week after repeated requests to renegotiate his contract were rejected by Dennis Wise, the Newcastle executive director, had been expected to join Martin O’Neill’s side before the closure of the transfer window on Monday, but Everton’s intervention represents an attractive alternative.

Everton have turned their attentions to Milner after conceding defeat by Liverpool in the race to lure Albert Riera from Espanyol, while Manches-ter City beat them to the signing of Shaun Wright-Phillips. After a sullen summer in terms of new faces, David Moyes, the manager, is desperate to add pace to his team.

Having publicised details of Milner’s request on their official website - a decision that infuriated the 22-year-old’s representatives, who had been asked by the club to keep the matter private - it seems unthinkable that Newcastle would block his departure. Reports in Scandinavia suggest Everton have made a firm offer for Henrik Larsson.

A number of clubs have been linked with the veteran Swede in recent weeks, but Everton are said to be fronting the queue which is also said to include Tottenham.

Larsson has admitted to being flattered by the interest being shown in him from England - where he enjoyed a loan spell with Manchester United in 2007.

"It is flattering that there is interest." Larsson told Expressen.

Larsson's agent Rob Jansen has confirmed that the striker has received an offer to move to England, reported to be from Everton.

"It's up to Henrik to decide now. If he wants to join this club," Jansen stated.

"He will make his decision during the weekend."

Larsson's club Helsingborgs have already stated they could be willing to let him leave

CARLO NASH is on the verge of becoming Everton's first signing of transfer deadline day.

Blues boss David Moyes has been looking to find experienced cover for first choice goalkeeper Tim Howard all summer and has weighed up a number of options but is ready to opt for Nash.

The 34-year-old has been at Wigan Athletic since February 2007 but is currently third in the pecking order behind Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt and spent the end of last season on loan at Stoke City.

Steve Bruce was not keen to let him leave while there were worries about Kirkland's fitness last week but he played in Wigan's 5-0 win at Hull on Saturday and has now given Nash the green light to go.

Nash, who numbers Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Preston among his former employers, has made 274 appearances during his career but he will not be available to play in the Carling Cup as he is cup tied after playing in Wigan's 4-0 win over Notts County.
