Exclamation England Manager-Fabio Capello

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Capello named new England manager

Quote:
Fabio Capello has been confirmed as the new England manager after the details of his contract were finalised with the Football Association.

The Italian signed a four-and-a-half year deal - reportedly worth £6m a year, with an opt out after 2010.

Capello, 61, will be unveiled at a news conference on Monday before officially taking up the role on 7 January.

His backroom staff is all-Italian but he is to consider how to integrate an English presence into the set-up.

England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce was among those seen arriving at the FA's headquarters in Soho Square, London, on Friday.

Alan Shearer, Tony Adams and David Platt have also been linked with a role in the Capello's team.

Capello confirmed as England coach

Quote:
The Football Association have confirmed Fabio Capello as the new England manager on a four-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2012.

The news was revealed 48 hours after Capello agreed in principle to lead the Three Lions, with the decision being ratified by the FA Board on Thursday.

Final negotiations between the FA and Capello's advisors have now been completed and the former Juventus, AC Milan and Real Madrid coach will begin work on January 7.

"I am delighted that Fabio Capello has agreed to become England manager," said FA chief executive Brian Barwick.

"When we set out to recruit the new manager, we said we were committed to appointing a world-class candidate. In Fabio Capello we have that man.

"Fabio is a winner. His record over the last two decades speaks for itself.

"At every club he has managed Fabio has won the league title and Sir Trevor Brooking and I were left in no doubt of his passion and commitment to bring that success to the England team."

Capello's backroom boys - Mirror.co.uk

Quote:
Fabio wins battle for his own backroom pals.. now THESE men will be in charge of the England team

Fabio Capello won his first battle as England boss last night as he gained approval for his full Italian backroom team to join him in London.

The next Three Lions chief stood his ground to have assistant Italo Galbiati, long-term confidante Franco Baldini, goalkeeping coach Franco Tancredi and fitness guru Massimo Neri alongside him when he takes over next month.

After drawn-out negotiations, Capello got outline approval to have the men he wanted in his coaching staff - although there is still room for Alan Shearer and Stuart Pearce to provide an English influence.

The FA confirmed: "The board has approved his appointment as manager subject to further contract negotiations.

"These will continue. But there are no problems and we're going through the process for a successful conclusion."

Last night it was clear that there was still some concerns at the FA over the potential £1.5m-a-year cost of Capello's chosen support staff, in addition to the 61-year-old's own £4m annual salary.

One FA source said: "All four of them will have jobs once the contracts are signed but we also have to make sure we get the best deal for us as well.

"We don't want to be accused of paying too much to get them on board. But we do not expect any problems in sorting this out."

There were suggestions that Premier League chairman Sir David Richards - a leading member of the FA board - was the most resistant to Baldini's appointment as "sporting director", despite the urgings of chief executive Brian Barwick to seal the deal with a boss who ticks all the boxes.

Quote:
FAB'S BACK ROOM BOYS

FRANCO BALDINI

Capello's fixer and part of the brains trust, the former Bologna midfielder earned his spurs as Roma's sporting director. A combative street-fighter, he turned down the chance to take the political helm at Juventus in favour of following Capello to Real Madrid in 2006. Will be the manager's pointman with Premier League bosses.

ITALO GALBIATI

The 70-year-old former Inter Milan player has been Capello's No.2 since he took up the AC Milan reins in 1991 and is seen as the living extension of the new England boss. Followed Capello throughout his managerial career although he is the man deputed to break the bad news to the players left out of the starting side.

FRANCO TANCREDI

Former Roma and Italy goalkeeper who got a first-hand view of Bruce Grobbelaar's 'spaghetti legs' antics in the 1984 European Cup Final penalty shoot-out and was in the Italy squad at the 1986 World Cup. Moved with Capello from Roma to Juventus and Real. Will end Ray Clemence's 11 years as England goalkeeping coach.

MASSIMO NERI

Another Capello ally since his spell at Roma but noted as a hardline fitness coach, cited by the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Will demand highest fitness levels from the England squad, especially in the build-up to the World Cup.

Hmm.

I have a bad feeling this is going to be Sven all over again.

Capello is undeniably a very good coach (a la Sven before taking over England) but I doubt the English press or the English public will respond well to the boring, cagey, ultra defensive style of football he tends to favour. Plus I'm not at all convinced that style of play will work with a team of Englishmen, it works in Italy, Italians are familiar with it and understand it. English footballers, by nature, tend to be more attacking minded and less tactically aware.

I think ur being pessimistic, probably the wise way to be considering what we've had to suffer recently tho.

BUT, I'm delighted with this appointment, because although Capello and Sven hold some similarities, they're very different characters. Capello is much more abrasive and will tolerate far less than Sven, and he instils a real work ethic into his players. I still don't buy all this uber-defensive stuff, I see it more as counter-attacking based on Real last season, they were scoring like 3 or 4 goals a game! and at this stage, even if it is really defensive football, tbh I don't care as long as the team is successful.

And as for English players being attack-minded and tactically retarded, they might be the latter but Capello probably won't tolerate that and will force it into them, and with the former idea, aren't Spanish/Brazilian/Argentinian players (who he dealed with last year at Real) supposedly even more attack-minded than the English?

Have faith, let's not jump to conclusions either way until we've seen him manage a few games

You folk have Baldini.Top man.Always respected him when he was at Roma. The coach chooses the players but Baldini will no doubt be looking at the young gems starting to flourish and are in need of a chance for the senior team.Very business like man as well.

Good appointment.

If I 'have faith' and start feeling optimistic about the England team the inevitable failure will just be more disappointing.

In all honesty, I never doubted Capello would get the job. It's the most obvious appointment ever.

There are no English candidates above mid-table standard. Let alone the fact the FA said they were looking for a World Class coach.
Mourinho was the early favourite, but he had already said that he wouldn't take it because playing against Portugal wasn't something he was prepared to do.
Although among the best candidates was Marcello Lippi, he can't speak a word of English, so you more or less rule him out.

You won't be worried about the football if you're English. With your form, a win would be enough to make the football look absolutely incredible.

And I'm really looking forward to it, Capello vs the Media will be brilliant.

I most certainly agree with you! I think english football doesn't suit his style or vice versa!

I think English football suits his style perfectly. The defense will be sorted. You'll play some good solid defensive football.I dont see the problem with that.

Capello is also known to have a little long ball system when behind which would suit your players perfectly

Congrats on this, I personally think this is good for your program. I'm really curous to see what he does.

Lets not kid ourselves, we saw the disgrace which was the Croatia game, Capello WILL not let that happen.

He might not understand english football, but he has a far better understanding of various types of football, and you right now have the best coach in International football.

He will not be outcoached.

What are you on about? Sven and Mcllaren were hardly promoters of attacking football and the reason they got the boot was because of results not the lack of pass and move (which is your biggest weakness). Capello will get results that and he's a no nonsense type that will get respect as he won't A, go around shagging everything that moves and B, be on the touchline with an umbrella.

Remember Capello is a genius at forming teams that play to players strengths, he'll keep you tight but also watch Rooney prosper.

Capello is everything you need and it makes me sick .

Oh and I hope JT gets stripped of the armband it would be so funny.

That is very true, Cap will turn one star into the main guy, and I think that will be Rooney.

You make some good points but I absolutely refuse to be optimistic about anything to do with the England national team.

Who would you make captain then (I still reckon Rooney would make a good captain in the future but I'm not if he'd be a good choice ATM, other than him there aren't too many name to consider, Lampard? Gerrard? Ferdinand?).

I personally think G. Neville was the perfect choice but he's not got long left.

I persona
