Owen and Crouch, with Rooney infront of a 3man midfield is the best solution.

By your own admission Gerrard is much better as an attacking midfielder. With Rooney enfront of him it would neutralise his attacking threat.

If you use a trident it should be Gerrard behind Owen and Rooney.

good shout...
or cole...
its both good and bad that we are blessed with such talent in the middle...
obviously we have excellent cover in case any get injured, but it also means that the manager tries to fit the system around the players rather than fit the players around the system...
its agony for any england fan to watch gerrards obvious attacking ability be sacrificed, because he has defending ability when lampard doesnt...

I prefer Lampard in that box-box role...his productivity and ability to maintain possesion is something that Stevie just isn't comfortable with, he want's to go off all over the place.
He is obviously talented enough to do what Frank does, but why limit him to doing a job that Frank has taken to it's peak? It makes no sense. Gerrard is an attacking force, he should be utilised as such...behind the striker, on the wing, add a holding midfielder so him and Lampard can play in front.
That said, he could quite easily be the best holding midfielder in the world and the team is more important than the player, right now we have noone that can play holding midfield as well as Gerrard can.

There is a problem with two short arses up front. Owen is fireproof (because of the goals record) but it's the lack of an overall contribution, it's even worse when he's not fully fit/at it.
The Crouchie Monster and Rooney would be a perfect "combination", with Gerrard breaking from midfield.

Rooney isn't a "shortarse" and he can hold the ball up far better than Crouch....2 assists and a goal in his last match when he was 'unfit', 2 goals against Argentina...his overall production is fantastic.

crouch was lightweight and couldnt hold the ball up yesterday...
considering hes supposed to be the one who does that in our frontline in rooneys absense, pretty much makes him redundant...
i cant wait for rooney to be fit, so we are a bit more solid up front...

He doesn't really play up front though does he. Owen's a waste of space at the mo. Let's hope we're not fucked off home before anyone realises.

he will replace crouch anyway, so that will make us stronger up front as rooney holds up the ball, creates and gets into decent scoring opportunities..

That's a worrying thought, though it could explain why England have only ever won 1 World Cup.

I reckon it might have more to do with the Olympics. It occurred to me the other day; young players from other sides get valuable experience playing in the Olympics but England youngsters don't. We can't play Olympic football because we compete at the Olympics as Great Britain but GB is represented separately as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under FIFA.

The Aussie commentators are on about it non-stop. The Olympics is great for youth teams.
I wish FIFA, the FA and the Great Britain Olympics committee would get there bloody act together and come to some kind of arangement.
In the Deaf Olympics (Melbourne 2005) I saw Great Britain beat Iran 2-1 in the final. Even the deaf can organise a football team easier than the FA!
