Default Carson gets Green light for Germany

Quote:
Only a few weeks ago Scott Carson was involved in a battle to survive in the Coca-Cola Championship with Sheffield Wednesday, now he is heading for the World Cup with England.

Robert Green's groin injury in the 'B' international against Belarus means a call-up for Carson, who was on stand-by for Germany. He has been promoted into the final 23 as the third keeper behind Paul Robinson and David James after Green's nightmare scenario at the Madejski Stadium.

The Norwich number one had only been on the pitch five minutes as a second-half substitute when his left leg gave under him as he attempted to take a goal-kick. Green was stretchered off and replaced by Carson, who spent the second half of last season on loan from Liverpool to Sheffield Wednesday - who managed to stave off the drop into League One.

His future is in the balance, with Owls boss Paul Sturrock still waiting to find out if a permanent move can be clinched. But now on the agenda is being part of the England squad heading for Germany and Eriksson has faith in the former Leeds player.

Eriksson said of Green: "He's almost certainly out. He's got a scan on Friday and that will confirm it. That is bad news for him. It is a bad groin injury.

"It's a pity for him but Scott Carson is a good keeper, he's played at Under-21 level and done well and he showed he is a good keeper when he came on.

"Maybe we will bring another keeper in on stand-by, maybe not. We are discussing what to do."

Carson has always spoken of his desire to emulate the achievements of his former Leeds club-mate Robinson, who has established himself as England number one in the past two seasons.

Now he has moved a step closer to achieving that ambition by being part of the squad which will aim to lift the World Cup for the first time in 40 years.
Question for those of you that followed the Coca Cola Championship last season: How did Carson do at Shef Weds this season, I mean for example did he do better than Ben Foster?

exactly. I think Foster is probably better than Green aswell.

Probably bias though obviously. Foster has been called up now, see the Watford forum.

Mean Green (Norwich) finish midtable...Watford finish 3rd. Foster has been getting plenty of praise all season aswell.

Sven picked Carson because he's more experienced, simple as.

Yes he did and so he should of done. It was the obvious decision, I just wanted to get an idea of how good he actually is.
