Improving Rooney could face Sweden
Quote:
Wayne Rooney could be fit for England's World Cup group match against Sweden on June 20 after scans revealed that his broken foot was healing ahead of schedule.
The Times claims that 'recent scans have put Rooney and his doctors in good heart' and that, if the Manchester United striker's present rate of recuperation is maintained, he will return almost two weeks ahead of initial forecasts.
Although he has discarded his oxygen tent because it makes him feel nauseous, 'Rooney is known to be setting about his recovery work with a growing confidence that he can play a significant role for his country in Germany next month,' the newspaper reports.
Sir Alex, you said something about 'forlorn'?
The upbeat diagnosis may also be an explanation for why Sven-Goran Eriksson named just four strikers on Monday in his 23-man squad for the World Cup finals - the crocked Rooney, the unfit Michael Owen, the unseen Theo Walcott and Peter Crouch.
While Rooney will definitely miss England’s opening two World Cup group matches against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago, he could hand Sven - and the nation - a huge lift by returning to training in the first week of June. The Sweden match takes place a full seven weeks after he suffered his injury against Chelski at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, there was further good news when Newcastle reported that Owen will return to full training next week after doctors reassured the striker that the bone in his broken foot had fully healed.

I don't think we should look at the group games, we should qualify from that anyway. He shouldn't be rushed back and should probably be used in the knockouts as an impact player to begin with.
Unless he is pretty much fit by the start of the tournament.
Great news though....dare I say I told you so...

Of course but a run out in the last 20mins of the Sweden wouldn't hurt.

I'm starting to get the feeling this could be the biggest wind-up ever attempted. The fact he's out and about, cycling, always wearing training gear suggests this injury isn't as serious as is being made out. Also it took hours and hours after the game to reveal the 'diagnosis'...enough time for Sven, Ferguson and Rooney to get together and concoct a plan to take all the pressure off Rooney as the nation's saviour.
Just a thought, but I'm sticking a tenner on him appearing in the first match.

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER, variously described and derided as 'brave rebels', 'irrelevant outsiders' and 'a right bunch of dicks'. Living testament to that peculiarly Mancunian talent for gazing at the world in all it's wonder, thinking for a minute, and then muttering "Nah that's bollocks. This is how we'll do it..."

OH OH OOH! It's Carrick you know! Hard to believe it's not Scholes!

No. I think if this was a hoax its one where they just exaggerated things, not preplanned an injury.

It is an interesting idea. It would explain why after early reports of him being fine it was suddenly revealed that he had broken his metatarsal.
Then again this may be what happened:

Yes he certainly was injured as you could see from his reaction when he went down. If he was faking that he is a better actor than he is a footballer.
And very good russell.

Sir Alex Ferguson has reiterated his belief that England should not risk taking Wayne Rooney to the World Cup unless the striker has made a 100 per cent recovery from his broken foot.

Time ticking away for Rooney
The Manchester United boss admits his views are partly fuelled by a selfish desire to have Rooney back at Old Trafford fully fit for the start of next season.
However, he genuinely feels England should learn from David Beckham's below-par showing at the last World Cup soon after suffering a similar injury to Rooney's.
'To go to a World Cup tournament you can't have anyone half-fit,' Ferguson told MUTV. 'That's happened before in the past. I think David Beckham was not fit when he went to the World Cup (in 2002).
'What we've done with Wayne is assist him in every possible way. He's tried the oxygen chamber; he hasn't enjoyed it but he tried it.
'They've not got absolutely conclusive evidence the oxygen chamber actually works but there's nothing against it. Everything is worth trying and that's what we're doing with Wayne.
'He's in good hands. He's got the boot off and he's walking normally now which is good news.
'So you never know, but I certainly think it's very important for the boy not to go half-fit or even three-quarters fit and not do himself or England justice.
'A lot of people might think I'm selfish in that respect, but Wayne is the most important player in the team at Manchester United.
'We have to ensure the boy is going to be fit at the start of the season for us. We all become selfish in that respect.
'England are selfish and Manchester United are selfish because they want the best for their operation.'
