Should Defoe take Owens place....
As it says on the tin, should Defoe be given Owen's England place on a perminent basis?
Owen, as good as he is and a great as he WAS, is he still truely worthy of his automatic starting place in the England side?
I believe that players should be in a side based upon their immediate form and record. Yes Owen got goals for Real last season and there's no doubting his quality. But still, the question begs to be asked as to why he is their surpless 5th choice stiker and subsequently heading towards an upper mid-table team such as Newcastle with none of the big teams here wanting to take him on???
Defoe has everything that Owen does with added pace, he is a first choice player for Spurs every week and score goals from all over the park on a regular basis... So why is it I get this horrible feeling that even if Defoe gets 20+league goals this season and leads Spurs into European next season that he will still not be able to dislodge Owen from Sven's butt-crack come World Cup time......???
Should he take his place from here on, or is Owen still your man...???

Defoe's a better finisher, as he can do what Owen does from inside the box aswell as that added bite from distance..he's got hella pace and can skin players.
There was talk buzzing around the possible 'Owen-Utd move' that it's benefit England as Rooney could further improve his rapport with Owen..but to be honest, imagine if Jermain was given a regular chance to link up with the Boy Roo. That partnership, oiled would be off the hook.

At the moment, Owen should be ahead of Defoe, but we should probably save judgement until later on in the season

A good call really, I am judging Owen as the fallen hero that he is at the moment but give him six months of regular footie alongside Shearer and he'll probably be buzzing again... May the best man win! (Come on Defoe...)

defoe.....over owen.
michael owen;
was great, but isnt any more.
only scores goals from inside the box....doesnt have blistering pace or the ball control to make up for that.
jermaine defoe;
creates goals from nothing...dribbles, is strong, is quick, can finish from anywhere.
has as good a strike rate as owen playing for a lesser club (no offence).
im sorry, but owen is liveing on reputation alone....he can score as many goals as he likes, but if you arent doing anything else other than finishing other peoples moves off your not worth the spot....especially when there is a better, quicker, more mobile striker that can do everything you do and more.

Why couldn't I put it like that!?
Spot on Hanuma, you know it, I know it as does Musolino... Still, Owen will lead us at the world cup, Defoe will get odd 15 mins when a game is either won or dead and beyond our reach... If Defoe got a proper run in the side he could easily play for England as well as he does Spurs, if not better for the players behind him supplying the balls...
Will Sven drop Owen? I am 100% sure that he won't and that's damn sad...

same can be said of beckham.....he isnt as good as wright phillips on the wing and not as good as parker/hargreaves/gerrard/lampard/carrick in the centre.

I suppose in Sven's (and his predicesors) defence that should he take the ultimate gamble and drop his big name players that he'll be cruesified should things fall to bits and we lose...???
as you say, ho hum...

i dont think the manager of england should give a **** what the media say.....it only matters if the players are happy and getting results.
this is probably half the problem with england.....in the aforementioned 'all played out' the players in italia 90 were interviewed by the writer and the media and their harassment dominated their mindset.
fine other countries get a bit of it too...but nothing like our players get.
i would accept that u cant pin everything on the media but you have to apportion a bit of the blame to them at least.....
my only advice to svenn is change your system quick irrelevant of what the ****s in the press will say.

If any member of the press was as good with football as they make themselves out to be (and I include ex-footie players amoung them) then they should or would be in charge...
I hate the press in this country, they do us little justice or favours and usually come out with something damaging ahead of major tourniments which baffles me... All the talk of Svens affairs ahead of the World Cup must have done him the world of good for example...

the worst thing about it is that our players and management seem physically incapable of blocking it and the press know this.....only hitler has so badly misused such power before....
