Maybe but that would require SWP on the right which still means when Wright Phillips is injured/not on the field then Becks is our right midfielder and should play right midfield.
I don't give a fcuk how well he may or may not do in the 'Pirlo role' when he is asked to play on the right that is where he should bloody well play.

of course he should play right when asked to...thats not what im saying.
this is what im saying.
.........................beckham
..............gerrard..............lampard
......rooney.................................cole
..........................owen
the front three given a completely free reign.
just imagine how good that could be....for a start everyone but becks would be given the role they have at club level and none of them would have the current ludicrous straight jackets imposed on them by 442.

Time to stop sticking the eleven best players in any old fashion and have a defensive player in there...
Beckham/SWP--------Carrick---------Lampard/Gerrard----------Cole
-------------------------Rooney-----------Owen
That means we have two quality players on the bench for Sven to bring on, because he is incapable of making tactical changes to alter the game.

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER, variously described and derided as 'brave rebels', 'irrelevant outsiders' and 'a right bunch of dicks'. Living testament to that peculiarly Mancunian talent for gazing at the world in all it's wonder, thinking for a minute, and then muttering "Nah that's bollocks. This is how we'll do it..."

OH OH OOH! It's Carrick you know! Hard to believe it's not Scholes!

i agree....im just tired of arguing defoe's case.
personally i think owen is a bit of a spent force and that defoe is as good as owen was when he was 22.

I'd have beckham infront of gerrard and lampard at least they would provide the defence a bot of cover.

Yes but I really can't see england doing well leaving the defense very much on there own. Considering how often Cole wanders off they need some support from midfield.

Fair point but their midfield included Gatuso, England have no such player.

Get Joe Cole to grow a beard and he'd at least look a bit like him...
Seriously though, we talk about not wanting to leave our defense exposed but might I point out that in G Neville, Ferdinand, Terry/Sol, A Cole we have a strong, experienced defence that plays against the best players in the world on a regluar basis (Champions League and some prem' games etc)
I think the midfield should be out and out attacking, remembering that attack is a great form of defence... Ok, they can all drop back to help out when their backs are against the wall but in general our defense can hold their own and with the form that Robbo's in at the moment, well, say no more...
Englands biggest problem is that they can take forever and a day to score, and when they do finally get a goal they can't get another to finish the game off and the other team equalises in the 89th minute or worse still comes back to win (alla Franch, Brazil as before...) We have a great, creative attacking midfield and Sven fails to use it to its potent best. If he did we could easily get a 2 goal lead against most teams and then he can do his defensive thing until his heart is content!
oh and I reckon that Carrick should get a look in some time soon cos he could be a fantastic super-sub in the world cup when Lampard/Gerrard has an off day, but he needs some competitive playing experience in an England shirt before hand to be at his confident best...

we have lampard and gerrard who are both willing and capable of working back.
i think lamps and stevie g is better than gattuso and seedorf.

With Seedorf being the player that lets the duo down... I think Gattuso is a fantastic player, his work rate is second to none and he's got some teeth on him for a little fella and no matter who he's up against he'll fly in with the tackles from the first whistle... Seedorf is a class act but I think he's faded in the last 2 seasons, much the same as Rui Costa...
