Amdy Faye To Pompey
Boro fail to snatch Faye from Pompey's clutches
Middlesbrough have failed in a late bid to beat Portsmouth to the signing of Senegal international Amdy Faye.
Boro made an initial approach to the Auxerre midfielder last week, but went through "the wrong channels" according to his agent, Willie McKay.
And although Teessiders manager Steve McClaren then made a personal attempt to land the 26-year-old, Faye had already agreed to move to Pompey.
The news is another blow to Boro's fortunes in the transfer market this summer, with several top-class midfield targets having already gone elsewhere.
McClaren has signed former loan star Doriva and defenders Colin Cooper and Alan Wright have also agreed deals.
But the Boro boss - who has missed out on David Dunn, Brett Emerton and Geremi - knows he is still at least a couple of players short of the squad he wants, and the hunt for a new midfielder goes on.
