6. MLS WRAP WEEK 17: D.C. win drops Crew to last in East

By Ridge Mahoney
Senior Editor

Colorado takes its fourth straight and posts another shutout;
defensive errors doom the Burn in San Jose; the Fire again wins at
home; and D.C. United rallies to roust the Revs and drop the Crew
into last place.

BEST GOALS: Mark Chung snapped a header past Metros keeper Jonny
Walker from 10 yards out to give the Rapids a fourth straight win.
Kyle Beckerman, on the right wing, pushed a short ball that Chris
Henderson crossed first-time for Chung to nail into the net.

Taylor Twellman nicked the ball past Galin Ivanov and rifled a
22-yard shot into top corner for the Revs' first goal prior to their
utter collapse in a 4-2 loss to D.C.

Dema Kovalenko volleyed a cross from Alecko Eskandarian into the
bottom far corner for the winning goal in United's amazing comeback
victory. United scored three more times after Eliseo Quintanilla
started the rally with a goal in the 83rd minute.

STAT: With its win, United (5-6-6, 21 points) took over fourth place
in the East from Columbus (5-6-5, 20 points). The Crew must play its
next two league games against the Galaxy at the Home Depot Center.

BEST ASSISTS: Henderson's cross was a classic bit of service and so
was Chris Roner's pass to Brian Mullan in the Quakes' 3-0 win.

After Brad Davis had mistrapped a corner kick, Roner anticipated and
deflected a header by Ezra Hendrickson, then raced to the loose ball
and hit a low square pass that Mullan drilled into the net.

STAT: Mullan's goal ended a home goalless streak of 328 minutes for
the Quakes, which had played 0-0 ties with Kansas City and Chicago
and lost 2-0 to Colorado in its previous games at Spartan Stadium.

BEST SAVES: In the Fire-Wizards game, Chicago's Zach Thornton
repelled a low drive by former teammate Diego Gutierrez with a
full-stretch lunge, and Tony Meola flew to his right to punch away a
Damani Ralph header.

BAD GOALS: Meola conceded two of the weakest goals of his career to
give the Fire a 2-0 win.

STAT: The Fire improved to 5-1-2 at Cardinal Stadium, which ties it
with Kansas City for the best home record in MLS.

Soccer Notes from the Washington Post

Quote:
United's Hristo Stoitchkov received his long-awaited green card, opening a slot for the acquisition of another foreign player. The green card makes him a permanent resident and exempt from MLS's limit of three senior international players per team.

Meantime, United's pursuit of Honduran national team striker Carlos Pavon, the top player on its wish list, appeared to come to an end yesterday when Pavon turned down United's latest offer, according to those involved in the negotiations. The sticking point was Pavon's insistence to re-enter the free agent market after this MLS season. . . . United forward Santino Quaranta sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee at a U.S. under-20 camp in Houston and could miss two to three weeks

Bayer has some kind of co-sharing agreement with the MLS. Bayer does have the right to recall -- but it can't be whenever they feel like it. I think certain conditions have to met.

I'm not 100% sure about the conditions of the arrangement -- so if someone knows the whole story it would be interesting to see the details.

US NEWS: BREAKING NEWS

Nowak To Lead United? 06/01/04

After a highly successful career as a player, Peter Nowak is reported to be in line to replace Ray Hudson as the head coach of D.C. United. And if contract negotiations go smoothly the 39 year old will be formerly introduced this week.

"I don't anticipate anything going wrong," a source close to the negotiations told the Washington Post. "It's all but done."

Despite not having any head coaching experience, the capital city side believes that the former Chicago Fire player might be the best person to help in the development of teen phenom Freddy Adu.

"We are in discussions with Peter about becoming our next head coach," United technical director Dave Kasper told the Washington Post.

United has also interviewed Juan Carlos Osorio, an assistant with English club Manchester City, and Chicago assistant Denis Hamlett.

Hopefully the new coach will do better than what Hudson did last season. I remember going to a couple of their games and some of the fans were shouting insults at him about the poor record.

Hopeflly things will cjange for the better. There was a lot of abuse shouted towards Hudson and the players, notably Etcheverry and Stewart.

1. MLS: D.C. United puts Peter Nowak at the helm

D.C. United has hired Peter Nowak, the former Chicago Fire star who
has no professional coaching experience, as head coach, replacing Ray
Hudson, who was dismissed after the 2003 season following two years
in charge.

"He has a wealth of experience in the game and knows what it takes to
become successful in Major League Soccer," said United technical
director Dave Kasper. "We are confident that Peter will lead our team
in the right direction."

Nowak, 39, played 23 years of professional soccer in his native
Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey and MLS.

He helped the Chicago Fire win the 1998 MLS is his first year and
played four more seasons for the Fire before retiring after the 2002
season. The playmaker was selected to the MLS Pepsi Best XI three
times (1998, 2000, 2001).

"As a player, I remember the great home field advantage that United
enjoyed," said Nowak. "Those great fans have suffered with the team
as of late and I hope our return to winning ways will allow us many
chances to celebrate future successes together."
