"It's always been our thought that AEG's soccer department, almost by definition, would run its course and I would return to United. I'm excited to be back. [With a new coach,] we have the makings of a new era here."
-- Kevin Payne, who is returning to D.C.'s day-to-day operations as the club's president and chief executive officer. Payne, who has been overseeing the operations of several Anschutz Entertainment Group MLS teams over the past two and a half year, was D.C. United's president and general manager from 1996 to 2001, during which time it won three MLS titles. (Washington Post)

"I'll still be involved with assisting [AEG] but without the direct oversight of the other teams."
-- Payne. (Washington Post)

Etcheverry leaves United after eight seasons

The Associated Press
1/21/04 8:13 PM

CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) -- Seven-time All-Star Marco Etcheverry, who helped lead D.C. United to three MLS titles in the 1990s, said Wednesday he is leaving the team after eight seasons.

The only player remaining from United's inaugural 1996 season, Etcheverry is one of the most accomplished players in league history. The Bolivian playmaker was an instrumental part of United's MLS Cup titles in 1996, 1997 and 1999. He was also league MVP in 1998, MLS Cup MVP in 1996 and All-Star game MVP in 2002.

"I want to let the fans know that I will always be a part of the D.C. United family," Etcheverry said. "Now I will be just like them, cheering the team on from the outside."

Etcheverry's departure had been expected. At 33 years old, he is not the dominant creative force he once was, and United needs room under the salary cap to rebuild after two losing seasons under coach Ray Hudson. The team chose 14-year-old Freddy Adu as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft last week, and Peter Nowak was hired as the new coach earlier this month.

Etcheverry's contract expired at the end of the season and he is expected to finish his playing career overseas. He could return to his native Bolivia, but he also has reportedly received offers from teams in the Middle East.

Etcheverry is third in assists in MLS history with 101. He is United's leader in assists, games played (191), games started (180), minutes played (16,305) and game-winning assists (25). He had six goals and seven assists in 2003.

"No, we've been clear with ABC. I won't say they wouldn't like to see him on the field, but they accept that it's the coach's decision."
-- MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis, also referring to Adu and the league's season opener on April 3, which will be live on ABC. (New York Sun)

"If coach puts me on the field, whether it's starting or coming in [off the bench], I know I can produce. I'm not really worried about that, because I've played against the MLS guys and I know what I can do against them and I'm going to go in with confidence and I'm not going to be scared of anyone. I'll go in and play my game and see what happens."
-- D.C. United forward Freddy Adu (The Washington Post)

"I think the club owes him the loyalty of giving him a shot at this. Jaime [Moreno] meant so much to our club, and the injuries he suffered over the years
occurred when he was on our team. He should have a chance to demonstrate
whether he can still play in this league."
-- Kevin Payne, president of D.C. United, which is nearing a deal that will
bring Moreno back from the MetroStars after an injury-riddled 2003 season.

That would be cool. Although cool just to be at the opener.

It is cool that I might see Adu in the opener, but tickets are probably going to be higher than most since it is the season opener.
