CONCACAF Nominates U.S. Soccer for Fair play Award

U.S. Soccer has been nominated by CONCACAF for the annual FIFA Fair Play Award, the winner of which will be announced on December 15 at the FIFA World Gala in Basel, Switzerland.

"The U.S. Soccer Federation was able to successfully organize the FIFA Women's World Cup within the limited time of four months as against the six years advance notice that is normally given to a Host country," said CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice President Jack Warner in making the formal nomination.

Originally schedule for China from Sept. 23 to Oct. 11, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2003 was moved out of the country by FIFA on May 3 because of the threat of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. At the time, FIFA sighted U.S. Soccer's impressive and detailed bid, presented in a way that assured the sport's governing body that the United States could handle the unique challenges that would come with hosting a tournament of its magnitude with just 120 days to prepare.

In that short amount of time, U.S. Soccer and FIFA worked together tirelessly to format a new schedule, select six venues on short notice to host matches, create a ticketing infrastructure, organize work forces and volunteers in each venue, finalize marketing partnerships, stage the FIFA Women's World Cup Final Draw at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., set travel schedules, lock down team training sites, organize a credentialing system, finalize a TV schedule, etc., etc.

“From the beginning for us, our focus was on not only ensuring that the Women’s World Cup would go on as scheduled, but it was also about making sure it continued to be a wonderful platform for women’s athletics around the world," said U.S. Soccer President Dr. S. Robert Contiguglia. "In our estimation, this event was just too important to risk delaying or canceling it, so from the outset our thought process was, first-and-foremost, to help FIFA and to make sure that the competition was staged in a manner worthy of its stature in the sporting landscape.”

The 16-team, 32-match tournament was eventually played in the United States from Sept. 20 through Oct. 12 in six venues across the country. The competition drew an amazing 365,527 fans across 17 match dates, an average of 21,502. On the final weekend of action at the new Home Depot Center in Carson, California, a total of 51,390 fans came out to see Germany defeat Sweden in overtime and watched the U.S. defeat Canada to maintain their perfect top three record in every women's world championship event ever played.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003 marked the third time in 10 years that the U.S. Soccer Federation has hosted a FIFA World Cup. In 1994, the FIFA World Cup was introduced to the American public for the first time, resulting in the highest attended event in FIFA history, and in 1999 the groundbreaking Women’s World Cup was, by every measurable yardstick, the most successful women’s sporting event ever.

FIFA approves CONCACAF World Cup qualifying format

By NESHA STARCEVIC, Associated Press Writer
December 3, 2003
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- The format for 2006 World Cup qualifying that gives the United States a first-round bye was approved Wednesday by soccer's governing body.

The United States will start qualifying on June 12 or 13 against either one of the 10 first-round winners from the Caribbean, or against Belize or Nicaragua -- Central American teams that also have first-round byes. The second game of the home-and-home, total-goal series takes place June 19 or 20.

The proposal was approved Wednesday by the FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee.

The World Cup qualifying draw will take place Friday. The 12 CONCACAF second-round winners will be divided into three four-team groups for the semifinals, with the top two teams in each group advancing. The top three teams in the finals qualify for the 32-nation tournament, and the No. 4 team goes to a playoff against the No. 5 team from South America or Asia, or the Oceania champion.

Also Wednesday, FIFA announced the schedule for the 2006 tournament, which will take place in 12 Germany cities. The tournament opens June 9 in the new stadium under construction in Munich, and the final is July 9 in Berlin's Olympic Stadium, which is being renovated.

Quarterfinals were scheduled for June 30 in Berlin and Hamburg, and July 1 in Frankfurt and Gelsenkirchen, and the semifinals will be July 4 in Dortmund and July 5 in Munich. Other games will be played in Cologne, Hanover, Kaiserslautern, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

Germany, a three-time champion, receives an automatic berth, but for the first time the defending champion does not. Brazil, which won its fifth title in 2002, is among 156 nations remaining in qualifying, which began last September with games in South America, which competes in one 10-team group.

Asia and Africa also started qualifying early, with 21 teams from Africa and six from Asia already eliminated.

In Europe, FIFA seeded the Czech Republic, England, France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and Turkey. The eight group winners will qualify, along with the top two second-place teams, and the other six second-place teams will advance to a playoff that produces three more qualifiers.

The 30 remaining African teams will be split into five groups, with the winners advancing. Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia were seeded.

Eight teams were seeded for Asia's second round: Bahrain, China, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. The group winners advance to the third round.

Soccer News
U.S. to open World Cup qualifying against Grenada or Guyana

By NESHA STARCEVIC
The Associated Press
12/5/03 2:13 PM

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- The United States will play Grenada or Guyana in its 2006 World Cup qualifying opener.

Friday's draw determined that Grenada and Guyana will play a home-and-home series on Feb. 18 and March 31. The winner advances to a second-round series against the United States, which plays at home the weekend of June 12-13 and on the road June 19-20.

The United States has never played either nation before.

The 12 second-round winners in the North and Central American and Caribbean region advance to the semifinal round.

If there are no upsets, the United States would be in a semifinal group with El Salvador, Jamaica and Panama. The top two teams advance to the six-nation regional final round in 2005, with the best three teams qualifying for the 32-nation World Cup field. The No. 4 team advances to a playoff against the No. 5 team from Asia.

In Europe, England was drawn into a group with Wales and Northern Ireland. The Netherlands and the Czech Republic wound up in the same qualifying group for the third straight time, and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro were drawn together.

Italy was drawn into a group with Slovenia, Scotland and Norway. Ireland is in a group with France, Switzerland and Israel.

San Jose has a tough match. Alajuelense is no pushover. Chicago should go through.

. United & K.C. Wizards qualify to 2005 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup

8.11.04 - D.C. United and Kansas City Wizards qualified to the 2005 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup after winning their 2004 Major League Soccer (USA/D1) Semifinal encounters over the weekend against the visiting New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy, respectively.
Both clubs, who will represent the USA in the eight-team CONCACAF Champions’ Cup next year, will also meet in the 2004 Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup Final at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on 14 November.

The Wizards, who will be making their second appearance at the CONCACAF tournament in 2005, reached the MLS Cup Final after defeating the Galaxy 2:0 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Friday.

The other MLS semifinal held on Saturday had D.C. United topping the Revolution 4:3 on penalty kicks after a 3:3 draw at the end of regulation and overtime in Washington D.C.’s RFK Stadium. D.C. United, who was the first USA club to win the Champions’ Cup in 1998, is making its six appearance at the annual CONCACAF event.

D.C. United and Kansas City Wizards will join Mexican League Clausura (Pumas UNAM) and Apertura (TBD) Winners, three clubs from the Union Centroamericana de Fútbol and one the Caribbean Football Union at the 2005 Champions’ Cup, which begins straight knockout home-and-away series on 9 March.

The winner of the 2005 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup will qualify to the next FIFA Club World Championship to be held in Japan in December of next year.

The CONCACAF Champions’ Cup is the longest running international club competition in the region and has crowned the champion club of the Confederation since its inception in 1962.
