El Salvador to play FIFA World Cup
Qualifying Match in Washington DC on March 26
Miami, January 28, 2008 – Traffic Sports USA announced today that El Salvador will play Anguilla in a FIFA 2010 World Cup Qualifying match at RFK Stadium in Washington DC, on Wednesday, March 26, at 8 PM.
This game is historic because it is the first time that El Salvador plays a World Cup Qualifying match in the nation’s capital, which metropolitan area is home to one of the largest Salvadoran immigrant communities estimated at more than 500,000. In addition, this match will be highly anticipated by the Salvadoran community because their national team hasn’t played in the Washington DC area. El Salvador looks to return to the form which landed the country the first Central American spot in a World Cup in 1970 and made it one of the strongest teams in the region during the 1980’s and 1990’s.
“This is a great way for El Salvador to kick off the 2010 WCQ because the first matches are virtually two home games for our team,” commented Rodrigo Calvo, President of the El Salvador Federation. “I am sure the Salvadorans will make RFK feel and sound like their home - Cuscatlan Stadium - for the day.”
This is officially Anguilla’s home match and will be the second match of a first round home and away series between El Salvador and Anguilla. This match was relocated to Washington DC due to the insufficient lighting at Anguilla’s home stadium. The first game is on February 6 in El Salvador and will be broadcast live exclusively on closed-circuit television at participating restaurants, bars and other commercial establishments.
"The Anguilla FA is grateful to Traffic Sports for the opportunity to place our Men's National Team on the largest playing stage that it has ever been,” remarked Raymond Guishard, President of the Anguilla FA. “While we know that the DC area has strong El Salvadorian communities, we also know that there is a relatively significant Anguillian population there which should help even things out a bit at RFK. For our team, the focus is to build on whatever the result is in San Salvador as we recognize that we are the underdogs. But, just as the proverbial phoenix, our players intend on rising to the challenge and giving El Salvador all it can handle."
The winner of this series will go on to face Panama in the second round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying in June.
Tickets for this match will go on sale on to the general public on February 11 through Ticketmaster. Groups and special package tickets will be available through D.C.
