PANAMA CITY, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Former Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes has been named as the new coach of Panama, the national federation said on Wednesday.


A statement on the federation Web site said Brazilian-born Guimaraes, who trained Costa Rica at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, would coach the team in their 2010 World Cup qualifiers.


He replaces former Panama striker Julio Dely Valdes, who local media said would take charge of the under-20 team.

Panama, who have never qualified for the World Cup, finished runners-up to the United States at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005.

They are at home to Peru in a friendly on Sunday, where the team will be coached on an interim basis by Rene Mendieta.

There is no doubt that Panama has skill. 2 years ago if you remember they were unlucky not to win the Gold Cup. They took the USA to penalties before we were able to steal it.

In the gold cup they were able to beat Columbia twice and South Africa, both of which beat Mexico.

Look for Panama to push Costa Rica for the 3rd spot in 2010 World Cup qualifying. At the very least, I think they'll be forth, in which case I believe they will have to face the 5th place CONMEBOL team for a playoff.
