As others have pointed out before me -- our defense really needs to hold. I think they will have their hands full. But I'm still optimistic.

USA plays Honduras in Olympic soccer qualifier

February 6, 2004
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Ticker) - After posting wins over Panama and Canada, the United States will play a relatively meaningless game Sturday when it meets Honduras in a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.

Bobby Convey scored both goals as the United States posted a 2-0 triumph over Canada on Thursday. Convey has four goals in the tournament and has singlehandedly put the Americans into semifinals, where a win would secure a berth in the 2004 Olympics.

"We're delighted to be in the semifinal round. This is what it's all about," USA coach Glenn Myernick said. "They're very focused and they've worked very hard, and now they're only 90 minutes away from going to the Olympics, and that's the only thing my team has come here for."

Honduras has already qualified for the semifinals following a 3-1 win Thursday over Panama. Saturday's game will determine final rankings in the group and semifinal opponents since both Honduras and the Americans are even in points and goal differential.

Mexico and Costa Rica are possible semifinal opponents for the Americans, who have qualified for every Olympics since 1980.

"My decision on how we go into the Honduras game is going to be based on the yellow card situation and the injury situation," Myernick said. "We want to continue to improve and not just use the Honduras game as a nothing game. We want to get our players some more international experience and use the Honduras game to prepare for the semifinal."

Convey has been working side-by-side with more recognized players like Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley and may get a deserved rest Saturday night.

"I think he's showing now that he's an impact player, day after day," Myernick said.

.S. defeats Honduras in Olympic soccer qualifier

By JOHN RICE
The Associated Press
2/7/04 5:04 PM

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) -- Alecko Eskandarian scored three goals to lead the United States to a 4-3 victory over Honduras on Saturday, setting up a showdown with Mexico for a spot in the Athens Olympics.

The United States won Group A of this regional soccer qualifier and will next play Mexico, most likely before more than 50,000 Mexican fans. Costa Rica next plays Honduras, and the winners of those games Tuesday advance to the Olympics.

The United States played most of the way with 10 men after defender Jose Burciaga Jr. was sent off in the 29th minute.

Fans booed and whistled over the lack of early action, and Kyle Beckerman broke open the sluggish game when he scored from the right side in the 46th minute.

Eskandarian scored on a free kick past the Honduran wall from just beyond the penalty circle after 27 minutes. His second goal came in the 57th minute with goalkeeper John Bodden out of position. He added a third goal in the 69th minute.

Roland Maradiaga scored for Honduras on penalty kicks in the 29th and 71st minutes. Samir Arzu added a third goal in the 75th minute.

With both teams assured of advancing, Honduras rested eight starters and the United States seven, including World Cup team figures DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan and Bobby Convey, who had four goals in the first two games of the tournament.

Earlier, Panama topped Canada 2-1. Both teams already had been eliminated from contention for a berth at the Athens Games. Victor Mirando and Jose Luis Garces scored for Panama. Robert Friend had Canada's goal.

Honduran striker David Suazo scored twice in Inter Milan's 3-2 win over Manchester United. Im surprised he doesn't have more caps for Honduras. I think with him they can make a serious run at the 3rd CONCACAF World Cup seed.

CONCACAF Champions League
Second-half goals lift Marathon past DC United 2:0

9/24/2008 - SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – Milton Nunez and Erick Norales scored second-half goals to lift host CD Marathon over D.C. United of America 2:0 Wednesday night at Estadio Olimpico to give it control of Group A in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Nunez opened the scoring CD Marathon in the 67th minute. Marvin Antonio Chavez ran along the edge of the 18-yard box, but had the ball tackled away well by D.C. United defender Gonzalo Martinez.

The ball landed at the feet of Nunez, who took a quick touch around a sliding Marc Burch and put his well-placed shot inside the far post from 20 yards.

Norales added an insurance goal with six minutes remaining, getting his head on a free kick from the left touchline and flicking the ball past D.C. goalkeeper Louis Crayton from the corner of the six-yard box.

The victory was a second straight for Marathon in the Champions League™, having also defeated Cruz Azul a week earlier at home. D.C. United’s loss kept USA teams winless in the inaugural Champions League, with Chivas USA and New England eliminated during the preliminary round, Houston held to a draw in its only game and D.C. losing twice.

Marathon had the best scoring chances of the opening half, but Saul Martinez, who received a through ball by Chavez, took a touch around Crayton only to have his shot cleared by D.C. defender Craig Thompson in the 25th minute.

Four minutes later, Nunez took a long ball off his foot, cut inside of two United defenders, but his attempted back across the goal was off target. Late in the first half, Mario Rene Berrios saw his shot punched out nicely by Crayton.

One of the few clear scoring chances for the visitors fell to newly signed Thabiso Khumalo, who cut inside of a defender but his shot from 16 yards out sailed over the crossbar.
